Thanks so much for posting this, @Ceruleanlord. I had only ever seen soundbites from this, never the whole thing.

I actually had a hard time getting through some of Moyers's cringeworthy questions (for instance, "Where does that come from? Your own fantasy?" and "You can make your own worlds right there on the computer screen?"), not to mention his painfully transparent questions ("More and more young people are turning to movies to find inspiration." "Is Star Wars your own spiritual quest?") but I always enjoy hearing the Maker speak. (I always think of Lucas when 3PO says, "Thank the Maker!" ;))

Anyway, here are a few snippets from Lucas that I found interesting:

"The Light Side and the Dark Side … are designed around compassion and greed…and we all have those two sides of us and we have to make sure that those two sides are in balance."

“There’s two sides to the redeemer motif that I’ve got in the Star Wars films, which is that ultimately Vader is redeemed by his children, especially having children. I believe that—I believe that you are redeemed by your children. That’s what life is about—procreating and raising children. It should bring the best of you out.”

"You need to tell the same story over and over again for every generation. Myths help you to find your place in the world. They remind you that you’re a part of a whole and that you must be part of the community, and you must put the community before yourself."

"How do we get Darth Vader back, is really the central issue. How do we get him back to that little boy that he was in the first movie, that good person who loved and was generous and kind and had a good heart?"

"Everyone has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives. You can either help somebody, be compassionate toward people or treat some people with dignity, or not. And one way you become a hero, and the other way you’re part of the problem. It’s not a grand thing…. It’s a very small thing that happens every day of your life."
