the good guys dress in black.. remember that ;)

hopefully we're done with the blatant similarities to the past movies. I think they went a step or 2 too far with TFA in that respect, but i do kinda understand what Disney/JJ did in the end.

Rian Johnson does different.. so let's hope he does different with ep8. i reckon he will ;)

Yes, I think TFA would have got away with it if they had not included the StarKiller Base or had the protagonist faction called the "Resistance".

The desert dwelling protagonist was probably a bit too much not the nose but I think that would have been a neat enough parallel and Kylo is a good parody and subversion of the similarities to the OT so they should have just controlled themselves a bit.

The difficulty that Rian Johnson faces in making VIII different is the starting place that VII left him in which lends itself into mimicking V by the character placement:
    1. Rey (Luke) is with the mysterious Jedi Master Luke (Yoda) so that she can begin training.
    2. The Resistance (Rebels) is going to be on the run from the First Order (Empire).
      1. Finn looks to be out on a limb doing random things with a woman (Han and Leia) on dodgy locations (Bespin/Casino World).
However, from what we've heard it seems like these fears will be unfounded (at least in Rey's case) with the arrival of the Knights of Ren on the Ach To and the duel happening there with the addition of a political subplot involving Poe, Leia and maybe Laura Dern.

At the moment it's just Finn who is looking the most suspect.

I also share your concern. For me it's simple. I want to see an original idea which is kinda difficult when it's the eighth installment of an ongoing saga. However, Rian Johnson was a very encouraging choice for writer/director because IMO, he has wonderfully original films already under his belt. TESB is IMO the best film in the series, but as much as I love it, I don't want Episode VIII drawing as many parallels as TFA did with ANH. I understand why JJ/Lucasfilm did it, and I enjoyed the film very much. But I don't think it's necessary to keep the similarities going throughout the ST. It's no easy task for Johnson, but I hope that Episode VIII is completely different but still recognizable as a Star Wars film.

I think that some 'minor' adjustments could have made a big difference with regards to the film being so close to ANH. instead of Poe doing his version of the 'trench run', i think it would have been kinda cool if the whole squadron had simply all bombed the exposed part of the base and finished the job that way.

i love all things star wars too much to be over critical, although i do draw the line at midi.. you know what though.

prob not a convo for the BDT thread.. apologies.

I really do hope that BDT's character isn't just some cliche movie trope.

It won't be a difficulty at all because while TFA was being written and filmed, Rian was taking notes and discussing with J.J.

It's not like J.J. and company got done without Rian not knowing a thing and then says, well here ya go.

Rian knew everything about the story and JJ left open certain things for Rian to explore. I can't remember where that article is about that very thing, but maybe @MagnarTheGreat could help with that.

I know with the recent rumors it seems unlikely, but I would love to see BDT playing the big villain of this movie. I suppose another powerful force-using bad guy would have probably been around for all of the stuff that went down in VII, making it less likely.

Now that we know that Kylo and Snoke aren't exactly Sith, I think the freedom from the "rule of two" should be used to full advantage and another villain should be put out there, as we have never seen a third force-using villain at one time before. Also, the way the Rey - completely untrained - bested Kylo on TFA really makes it difficult to see him as such a huge threat now. With Luke back in the picture, and Rey actually receiving training, he just doesn't seem to stand a chance

Never underestimate the power of the dark side. I think Kylo will be stronger than we think.

As for BDT, I hope he plays a bad guy. He would be good at it.

Originally I thought that too, I envisioned him being a mentor to Kylo & TKOR on orders of Snoke but this surprise me.

You're probably right. Rey only got the upper hand in that because he had just been Chewie crossbow'd. Considering what that thing does to other characters, it's actually pretty remarkable he could stand, let alone fight.

    THIS.

They tried to put it all in there to explain how the novice in the Force can best someone far more experienced and powerful. The whole bit about Han using Chewie's crossbow (and liking it) was not just for comedic relief. They were showing what that thing could do, so that we should understand that Kylo was seriously damaged goods during the final showdown. Not to mention he was injured by Finn, too.

In the first movie of each trilogy, the novice/inexperienced hero bests the big bad guy because of some non-Force related outside influence: Anakin destroyed the droid control ship thanks to R2D2 taking his ship off autopilot, "spinning" (that's a good trick), and some well placed "Yippees!" Luke destroyed the Death Star with Darth Vader on his tail thanks to Chewie and Han Solo's unexpected return. Rey bests Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel because he has already been mortally wounded by Chewie's crossbow.

Damn it. Chewie saved the day again and still didn't get a medal.

It's great to read their opinion & if they get it wrong, we see the real character either way.

The Collider crew has been wrong before. Their outlandish speculations are a mile away... take it with a big grain of salt. And don't get me started on Zeroh...

I've gotta say he'd make a great Thrawn. I like the idea of him being sent back to the Unknown Regions by Palaptine and told to wait on the Eclipse.

Also I think his accent would work well as Thrawn. If you listen to how Lars Mikkelsen voices him in Rebels you can hear his accent is different to the other Imperial officers with their clipped 'received pronunciation'. His accent is different (as befitting someone from the Unknown Regions) and the way he speaks in such a slow deliberate manner would suit Benicio down to the ground.

He's unlikely to play Thrawn since Rebels gave him a clipped English RP accent.
