    Hmm, Holdo is quite a confusing character.

    Everything about the way she is described would give the impression that she is an outsider to the Resistance, imposed on them by external forces: New boss, dresses differently, "temporarily put in charge of the Resistance". Yet she is always described as having worked for the Resistance or under Leia in the Resistance.

    Even the disagreement over tactics between her and Poe would suggest that she's thinking of a scope beyond a "Resistance group" that the Resistance is just one element in their forces:
    To me this suggests that Holdo is like a representative of the NR, someone sent to manage the Resistance while the NR consolidates. However, then Dern says lines like this:
    I think I'm just deluding myself in a desire to see the NR play an active role and save me from this awkwardly shoehorned replay of the Galactic Civil War.

    She's probably just someone who thinks the Resistance should be on the defensive and concede most of the galaxy while they regroup or worse someone who thinks they should negotiate an armistice.

    I'm hoping that she doesn't have that sing-songy voice that the Princess Leia novel describes her of having. That could get very annoying.

    To me, it sounds like maybe she was working for the Resistance from within the New Republic... perhaps she was their sort of ambassador in the Republic senate, or spoke up for Resistance issues as though it were a member world. And then with the decimation of the Republic leadership and fleet, she got hoisted up the Resistance ranks to become a Vice Admiral.

    I wonder where her ships are coming from, though--are they the remnants of the Republic fleet (surely the entire fleet wasn't stationed on Hosnian Prime)?

    I think Holdo is going to be an interesting character. I’m interested in seeing more. She has the potential to be a complex character.
