I think @markdeez means flipping the script, changing the plot of a story by adding some twists changing it's direction.

I agree, FF looks very promising. I love that a lot of Trank's inspiration for that movie came from Cronenberg. I haven't seen Chronicle yet, but this guy knows what he's doing.

The Cronenberg and Spielberg analogies that have been used to describe the film make no sense. Cronenberg was well-known for having creepily violent and/or sexual imagery in his films (which is something that a PG-13 movie would obviously not allow), and Spielberg's movies are known for having a lot of heart (which, as I've just implied, is generally absent from a Cronenberg's movies because of his unsettling style as a filmmaker).

If anything, it resembles an attempt to imitate Nolan, if only to fail to grasp a number of Nolan's signatures - like intellectually-engaging dialogue (over pretentious narration) or knowing when "grounding" something works (as opposed to making it so dark, dull, and derivative that it's unrecognizable from the original source material - compare the color-saturate, trippy Negative Zone from the comics with its boring, colorless counterpart in the movie).

I liked Chronicle for what it was, but Josh Trank and the shills at 20th Century Fox are trying to make their rights-grab of a movie sound more interesting than it actually is. I'm actually hoping that if this is how Trank "respects" an established franchise (he called the comic book version of Sue Storm "slutty", which has never, ever been a part of her character), maybe he's better off working on his own projects instead of trying to shoehorn what seems to be a Chronicle 2 peg into a Fantastic Four hole.

I always thought Cronenberg films involved a sense of 'body horror', like in The Fly, the gruesome transformation from man to bug, or minds being controlled/blown up in Scanners, or the crazy metamorphosis that occurs in Naked Lunch. It just seemed that theme would fit perfectly in a film where one teenager transforms into a living rock and another bursts into flames. I could see some teenagers relating to the material in a profound way considering the 'body horror' they are currently experiencing is that of puberty.

I agree that the trailer didn't scream Spielberg at all; the Chris Nolan imitation is readily apparent too, looks/sounds a lot like Interstellar. I will also confess that I have never read any of the source material, but this film looks a step up (and then some) from the first 20th century Fox FF franchise. *shudder*
Regardless, I will save final reservation till the movie comes out. I only hope it bodes well for the Star Wars spinoff.

So any of you followed the rumors about Trank on the F4 set? Him being a no show today has me wondering not if but when Lucasfilm will replace him as director of the second Anthology film. So yeah I'm calling it. He'll get fired or leave due to "creative differences" that seems to be the preferred choice these days

I don't doubt Trank will be off the film shortly after today. But there is more to this than Trank's F4 experiences giving Disney cold feet. if he were being let go for that they would have never announced him for this panel. Obviously up until this weekend, Disney and Lucasfilm were fine with him directing this film. They very easily could have made this a Rogue One panel and no one would have cared that Trank wasn't there. The movie is still far off and no one would have expected a large presence. The fact that he was included was a statement against the rumors that he was being removed from the picture.

Something happened at Celebration this weekend to cause the last minute cancellation. Whether it was something Trank did, or something about the film itself that made Kennedy get cold feet on announcing the title as was rumored. Obviously something's up. Unless the man was in the hospital, I don't see him backing out of a 20 minute appearance at the end of the panel. Who knows if we'll ever find out what really happened.

After the rumors of Trank's behavior on the F4 set, and now with him no showing a Celebration panel, I wonder if Lucasfilm/Disney will deem him unreliable and remove him from the project?

There were rumors that he has some major drug and/or party issues.

I'm kind of shocked that he would blow it, like this. I hope that's not the case. This is the opportunity of a lifetime.

i'm just of the opinion that with so many persistent rumors about his behavior the more that weird almost silent campaign for F4 and now his no-show for the panel - Something is up - and it aint good. One thing is feeling under the weather but like Max Rebo said - you have to be very very sick to bail on an event like this.

Yeah I'm shocked that he didn't show up to the panel. I really hope he's okay and that he can pull it together. I think Trank is a very talented filmmaker, he wouldn't have gotten the job, if he wasn't. I just don't want to see him fall off, and lose out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

It's very strange to me how far he's flown under the radar. There's been a minimal amount of marketing for F4. and we don't know how his SW project is going.

I wonder if there's some heat between Fox/Disney, as well. Just with the way Trank has been handled by both, and all those George Lucas videos/articles bashing Fox News.

My inner conspiracy theorist came up with that idea the moment it was announced he couldn't make it (and I was there when that was announced, dude). I'm thinking that, if this line of thinking is correct, they announced Josh Trank's involvement with the panel as a way to avoid creating bad PR, with no intention of following up on the promise that he'd be there.

I think he could still write the Star Wars Anthology movie if he can't handle the pressure of directing a big-budget project (which it sounds like he didn't regarding Fantastic Four, or at the least a drug addiction got in the way). I don't think it sounds like he's a bad guy or anything, though - just that he's made some mistakes and some bad decisions.

(On another note, I think that Josh Trank being hired to direct the movie was a political move by Disney to prevent Fox from using him for a Fantastic Four sequel in the event that the reboot did well. Given that the period of reshoots lasted longer than the filming period of the movie itself, I don't think it's likely that his direction for the franchise worked out.)

Based on some of the rumors about Trank's behavior on set of FF, good riddance.

Who should replace him, guys? An off-the-wall suggestion: Vince Gilligan as the producer of a Star Wars movie, perhaps even the director. He has obviously proven himself as a first-rate creative mind with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and I've been praying fo his return to genre storytelling (lest we forget that he cut his teeth on some of the best seasons of The X-Files)...

That's a great idea, hadn't even crossed my mind but it seems like a wonderful choice.
