See this is the problem. People assume Luke left Rey on Jakku. Of course he didn't. That was one of the first arguments made for why Rey couldn't be Luke's daughter.

That is why it is going to be fun to learn how Rey is Luke's daughter and why Luke didn't know about her (or go to get her).

Ugh this thing again? Cause that completely explains as to why Luke returned in Forces of Destiny...you realize that is just a random employee at a his or her desk right? There is no context as to what is going on. Of course the click baiters run with it and spin it to a completely different meaning then what it was. Something harmless that we don't understand.

And Rey says "Luke" -- deep down she suspects she might be connected to Luke. The belonging she seeks is not behind her (whomever left her on Jakku: possibly a now dead mother, possibly some filthy junk traders, etc.), but in front of her (Luke). Maz is saying Rey is mistaken about who Rey thinks was her family.

    @Andrew Waples

Well, it's not as if it didn't exist.
    It happened.

Imagine you are are at your job and your boss find out your wallpaper on the company pc has ads for the competition.

Or you are eating at McDonalds and you look at the server there wearing Burger King T-Shirts.

This is interesting because it helps make my point -- people are so focused on things that supposedly happened but don't stop to question WHY it happened. Why did Kylo tell Rey her parents were junk traders? Why did Rey think her parents might be "nobodies"? Why did Rian try to persuade us that Rey thinks her parents are nobodies? Why was Rey abandoned or hidden on Jakku? The answers to questions like these are why the final episode will be fun!

why did Rey and Ren have finger sex in the hut on Ahch-To?
why did Abrams and Johnson troll us with incest?
As a tongue-in-cheek joke about the Luke-Leia kisses?

Disney must have a sick sense of humor! : D

Are we really going to bring this up? A fact that a random Lucasfilm employee (well, he's not exactly random, he appears regularly on Star Wars Show, forgot his name) put an X on Luke's face as a part of a desk decoration somehow signifies Kathleen Kennedy hates Luke? These two things aren't related in any way. Moreover, we know why there is an X on Luke's face. Drumrolls, please... The theme of this desk's decorations was "The Empire." Ta-dah!

There is also a recording of KK saying Star Wars fans cannot relate to Luke. It's not part of that video. But the recording is really there.

You can't deny that these things didn't happen.

It's just a random red pen...you also use a red pen to fix things or that need correcting, like on a essay. See? There is no context.

@JediJurist you did a good job backing up your idea with strong arguments.

However, they weren't strong enough to convince me.

The Skywalker story has been told, and Mark Hamill ain't getting no younger. You say Disney needs Rey to be a Skywalker because $$$. But I feel Disney needs Rey to NOT be a Skywalker because $$$. The saga is in the hands of younger actors. Nobody is going to buy extra merch because Rey's father turns out to be Luke, but nobody will buy ANY Star Wars merch if the saga can't connect to the kids who serve as the target merch demographic. And the idea that anyone, - even a scavenger girl from nowhere - can become great resonates with the target demographic more than the idea of Force royalty, the catch being if you aren't born into a royal lineage, you can't be somebody special.

You are right that Rey doesn't know who she is, how she fits, where she belongs. But what young person does? That's part of her appeal, part of what makes her relatable. A driving factor of the ST is that Rey defines her own identity. She doesn't know who she is, but we get to watch her become who she's becoming. She doesn't belong in Kylo's version of the story, the story of ancient prophecies and bloodlines of nobility. But she still inherited Han's ship, Chewbacca's companionship, Anakin's lightsaber, Leia's affection, and Luke's final lessons. She got those things because of the choices she made, not because she's higher up the Skywalker ancestry tree than Kylo Ren.

No, I think the creative minds behind LucasFIlm and DIsney realized the whole midi-chlorian thing wasn't working. The simple definition of the Force being an energy that binds all living things together worked better, so that's what they returned to. That's why Luke taught Rey to recognize the Force in the birth and decay, the life and the death, the peace and the violence. It's not a power that the Jedi or the Sith have, it's a connection between EVERYTHING, and when we realize that the Force is in us, not just in the Jedi Knights... see how it makes us want to believe?

And when you want to believe, the merch will surely follow (see Claus, Santa, et al).

But like you graciously said in your first post, I may be proven wrong in the next episode too. If you care to put a wager in the Cantina Casino, I've got a few shiny new credits on Rey NOT being a Skywalker in Episode IX.

I get the appeal of Rey Nobody and the idea that anyone can become a Jedi. I think that is still in play even if Rey is a Skywalker.

My main reservation with Rey Nobody is that she is very special. She is very powerful despite a lack of training. If she is simply another run-of-the-mill Jedi doesn’t that lessen the whole chosen one story. She’s so powerful and if she’s a nobody why the heck are we so interested in the skywalkers to begin with?

Mostly I really find it hard to think Disney would choose to have no children for Luke, especially when they initially said this is the Skywalker saga. Non-Skywalker movies are being made in the anthology films and apparently another trilogy by Rian and others. Skywalker—the name—is such an awesome brand. Terrible business to kill it off. Given we still know so little about Luke post-ROTJ, I’d be surprised if it is revealed he didn’t have a family and kids. (My pet speculation is that Rey finds out she is Luke’s daughter from a twin brother or sister or her mother)....

If you are a Reylo 'shipper, you should pray that Rey is not a Skywalker or Solo.

She should have been a student of Luke at his Academy. But it's too late.

    Now she's Abeloth.

Regarding anyone can be a Jedi, I think if one were to watch A New Hope only, that would actually be true.
    Obi-Wan: Learn about the Force.
He did't say, your Father is strong with the Force, you are too. He said Learn about the Force.

And through out the Trilogy, it was strongly hinted that Han is Force sensitive.

Although, if everyone is Force sensitive, it cheapens the concept.
It's like in the US. When you are in elementary school, they tell you, everyone can be President!
    yeah, keep telling yourself that.

One of the things that's confounded me is the whole Random thing. Are they really serious about that, or are they going to blink now that its clear it was in no way accepted by fans? Basically.. JUST KIDDING... here is the real stuff and Ren LIED, even at that even Rey didn't know the whole truth! #narrativesurgery.

But the core problem has been, who do you link her to, particularly mother? Holdo is dead, Leia is not going to be in 9 for obvious reasons. Rainy pretty much axed any female that was noteworthy enough to carry that load.

I just saw Solo yesterday, and then like a bolt out of the blue it hit me. What about Qi`Ra? (pronounced in the film as KIRA... which should have been ringing all sorts of bells). Obviously we're not going to get followup films to the Solo arc given the flop of this latest film... but there is literally 0 reason why they can't continue to use that character, and with Han dead... she needs an anchor, in order to provide reason to include her in the story.

So like... everybody else has had a turn... what about Qi`Ra as Rey's Mother?

Speak for yourself. I like Rey "random" and then there are the Reylo shippers too.

Not everyone needs to be connected. It's a huge galaxy after all.

A story about a nobody becoming somebody and finding a family is much more interesting for me than a legacy story. And btw we already have a legacy story with Kylo Ren.

Blanket statements such as this should really be avoided; many have accepted it and like the fact that her lineage doesn't matter.

Fun to think about, but probably not....

The "Importance of Rey's parents" thing is a loaded question, in my opinion. While I believe that Ren told Rey the truth about her parents, I think there could be a lack-of-context factor here. To Ren, her parents were unimportant to his / the Skywalker story. But if her mother was someone like Qi'Ra, that would be important to us as fans but ultimately un-important to the Skywalker story.

The problem with Qi'ra is that she'd (like Jyn, if she survived) still be really old.

If Qi'ra is in her early to mid twenties in Solo, that puts her somewhere in her mid to late forties by the time Rey is born, I believe.

Not totally out of the realm of possibility, of course- but still, not particularly likely.

I guess the best support of this theory is that as far as we know, Qi'ra is kind of a scummy person (even if she manages to be classy as hell at the same time).

I'm speaking for the fans that DIDN'T show up last or this weekend.

Not everyone does. But in the case of Rey, for her to carry the load and be accepted, she'd better be related to important established characters. Otherwise you're just making a completely different story from what came before... and in a Saga tied together by actual numbers... that's not how this works.

Then they should make that movie, and not Skywalker Saga movies.

Only if that legacy is failure. Ben is the Skywalker that has gone bad. There needs to be a Skywalker that is good to pull him back from that. Randoms need not apply.

Its a Saga about family set against the backdrop of Space. Thats why it was popular. Why is this so hard to understand?

Its not pew pew Laserswords and Green Milk movies.

Its only a problem if you assume a natural birth.

Like anything else... this would be narrative surgery to solve problems introduced by 8 not having been accepted by the fans. Its clear they decided a direction and committed to it with 8, if you WERE to try to retcon the direction of the arc to support a different theory... how would you do it? And you can't just do it to do it, you would need to gain something from it.

And there are some really good points to the character introduced in Solo. Of all the things in Solo, I personally think Emilia Clarke was the best addition. Now, per the points.. she was in Imperial Custody for an unspecified length of time. You can use that. It can become incredibly important. Both in what could have happened to her, and why she's working with presumably(given Maul) the Empire via CD. Previously, she was just looking to get off-world. She wasn't really pegged as the monetary type except in helping her achieve her objective. About the main thing was said about her was she was a Survivor(not unlike Rey). Now, what is she ultimately after as she climbs this ladder?

    A small minority then.

Rey is one of the most beloved characters in SW right now, especially for young girls. So I think she is very much accepted.

Why? Let Rey be her own character!

Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa. They are the ones who tie the Saga together. Rey is like Obi-Wan. She is not related to the Skywalkers but plays a very important role in their story.

The first Star Wars was also about a nobody becoming a somebody. That's called the hero's journey.

    Kylo needs to redeem himself.

And it still is about family. Furthermore it's about becoming a family.

LOLOLOLOLOL. Disney disagrees. Everyone disagrees. About the only 'small minority' were people who saw the film.

After TFA, yes. TLJ did her no favors and really tanked the character, primarily by not giving her much of a backstory. Making her the random child of two drunks? That really gets the blood flowing... not.

Maybe you do. The audience doesn't. Part of being accepted is getting put through the ringer. TFA was presumably only the start of her story, she has yet to really be put through the ringer.

Because the Episodic Films aren't The Rey Story. Its The Skywalker Saga.

Sorry... doesn't work that way. All that does is say that Rey has to save The Skywalkers. What if Luke was kept a random kid from Tatooine. Its the fact that he pulls his father back from the Dark Side and saves the Galaxy in the process* that gives the story resonance.

    * until he goes crazysauce and tries to kill his student before later committing suicide projecting himself to Crait in order to punk out his nephew. Yay Skywalkers!
