SPECULATION THE OFFICIAL SNOKE DISCUSSION THREAD

Okay, I just ran this name by my boss' 8 year old son.. His response was a wrankled face and the words "Kinda weird."

My response to "Snoke"? Bluntly, the character name carnage continues.. I'm seriously starting to wonder if they should have given Stan Lee a call..

What really piqued me though was the 'Supreme Leader' part of it. Did anybody besides me start thinking of Cobra Commander and Destro when they heard that? The First Order may have all the toys of the Empire, but they seem to be behaving more like a terrorist organization.
Think about it. We got:
Cobra commander..

Destro..

Major Blood..

Baroness..

 

I don't really care either way about the name, but that might be because i'm on doctor prescribed strong painkillers.

 

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned here yet is the possibility that it might not be his full name. Maybe Snoke is his character's last name and we don't find out what his first name is till the movie is out. I'm only making the assumption that Snoke is a last name because of the title he has and also based on other characters who are referred to by titles and their last names (Chancellor Vallorum, Supreme Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine, Grand Moff Tarkin, etc).

 

Look firstly Full Disclosure guys, I am really EXCITED and PUMPED for this film.

I even in my mind broke down all the compartments of the film and thought they've aced everything (so far)!

Everything from talented and unexposed actors for the new cast... to God-Tier actors like Von Sydow for the elders.... to having the RAID actors who are like NITRO in terms of fighting ability (trust me!).... to getting JJ (who to me is perfect because he is the only guy who has had a dry/dummy/test run remaking Star Trek, so he can learn from his experience, and ace STAR WARS!)... All the way through to bringing Kasdan for the script since he did Empire Strikes Back... Even the minimal use of CGI... I mean there are so many great decisions being made!!

But one thing.. I can't stand...

I still almost want to pretend and believe that these are still placeholders.. but I don't know anymore... They are wack! :/

Poe Damaron - Name sounds quite frankly like a ******. Sorry.
Kylo Ren - Sounds weak as hell (unless he turns out to be Han/Leias son in which case it's fine because it doesn't need to sound badass just soft!)
Finn - Seriously??? There isn't a black person on earth with his name. It is like if Oscar Isaac's character name was Leeroy!!
Captain Phasma - Sounds like the star of Laser Quest/Tag.

Snoke.. #FAIL Don't even talk to me about Snoke. Sounds cartoonish like Snarf from Thundercats.

I loved all the old names.. Skywalkers.. Jedi vs Sith, X-Wings & Tie Fighters, The Force!, Darths, Obi-Wan Kenobi, planet names like Tatooine and Hoth.. So many super cool ones to recall.

But I don't know about these Force Awakens names.. :/

Anyway, still SUPER looking forward to this movie!

 

The name is a bit odd, but I think I'll get used to it, especially if the character is good.

I thought a guy with a bowl haircut named Anton Chigurh was a rather silly
proposition, until the character onscreen turned out to be a totally scary,
wicked, evil badass.

 

Don't forget this guy.

Speaking of which, isn't his organization fighting groups of resistance fighters?

 

Snoke? Isn't that the name of the slutty Oompa-Loompa from Jersey Shore?

Super agree. A part of me wishes we didn't learn the names until watching the movies. All the sci-fi names sound kinda dumb. or most names in general. It is the object associated with the name that matters.

 

If by most you mean three. And those three all have a story driven reason to conceal their identity. What incentive does a once dead Sith Lord have to parade around pretending to be someone else?

Nothing that wouldn't have to be explained and explained some more.

As for your notion of their being some kind of plot twist. No. I'm just gonna say flat out no. Not in this film. And especially not regarding Andy Serkis' character who may be important but is not a main character in this film.

What's amazing is that so many people think that there's just unlimited screen time to explore every minor character, and that all these characters must have the same importance to the plot. At this rate, if you're remotely correct half of this film is going to be those characters sitting around talking about their selves and explaining every little detail.

Will there be secrets unraveled during the course of the trilogy? Sure. But this certainly isn't the film for it and there simply isn't time to set up any kind of twist people will remotely care about along with everything else this story has to do.

Also what you're expecting the story to be really is what makes no sense.

Let me help you put this into perspective: Speculation about Plagueis being a villain in TFA sprang from rumors that Luke is guarding some sort of ancient tomb or something to keep said villain from resurrecting which itself started with various rumors and speculation about Luke being in exile, including him even possibly being a cyborg or being driven insane to the point that he could be a bad guy.

All of this was and remains unconfirmed, and frankly stupid. I cannot think of more lazy writing that belongs in an utterly forgettable Saturday morning cartoon than the idea that Plagueis actually did cheat death and he's just been on an extended vacation waiting to make his move no one knows or will even care about.

And what is the point? Basically just so the handful of people who weren't satisfied with Anakin's origin can get the closure they need when it's verbatim stated from the proverbial horse's mouth that Plagueis created Anakin?

That's going to go over really well with the overwhelming majority who would rather not hear a thing about midichlorians ever again.

And worse, it literally serves no purpose to the story at all. At worse it's a total retcon that provides an easy and totally dumb way for them to find the next even more menacing bad guy, at best it's lazy and pointless.

What we do know about this character is that he will be fully CGI, he only appears in a few scenes, he prefers lightsabers to blasters and now we have a name.

What we can take from that name isn't a lot but it's pretty safe to assume the Supreme Leader of the first order isn't some dead guy sitting in a tomb. He's actively running the show.

So what's the big twist? That the bad guy in charge is secretly Darth Plagueis just so we can get a Scooby Doo ending in one of the films where he telegraphs the whole thing to the audience who otherwise wouldn't have expected it and still doesn't give two shits about it?

 

I think we get use to names. When out of context it often sounds silly.

Metallica is a great example. Sh#t name but we don't notice anymore.

I have no issues with any of the names really... it's SCI-FI... as long as they sound vaguely heroic/evil when needed... it's all good.

C'mon. If they came out with Chewbacca yesterday... you all would be like "CHEW TABACCA??? What the Blast? LAME!"
