    Hey everyone, I wanted to ask about this because I remember watching this abomination as a child and being really disappointed. I was wondering what everyone else's experience was, so please share.

    And now today whenever I see it, I find it to be hilarious. Unintended comedy is truly the best comedy, and this thing has it in spades.

    The best way to experience this trainwreck is with the TV ads attached to it. I remember seeing a toy called "Tobor", which the announcer duly declared that "It's 'Robot' spelled backwards!" as if it were a selling point.

    It's an awful TV Special, but I can appreciate that they actually hired the whole cast to participate in it. Shame they weren't used particularly well. It had a few redeeming moments, such as the Boba Fett cartoon (oddly-animated though it was), the Bea Arthur sub-plot on Tatooine (don't laugh, I actually like that part), and this song (which perfectly captures the feeling of the space rock genre of the seventies):


    I'd love to watch the Rifftrax of this sometime. Would anyone here be up to streaming it or something in time for Life Day the Holidays?

    I remember watching live in 1978, and was horrified by how bad it was then. I honestly have never watched it again other then short YouTube clips here and there. It would be funny if it were on cable and to see how people react to it in 2014.

    I remember the Tobor toy! Oh goodness how awful, robot spelled backward indeed.

    I agree the Boba Fett animation was actually quite well done. It's a curious footnote to Star Wars history that one of the coolest villains premiered on what is unquestionably the worst thing to ever bear the name Star Wars.

    The virtual reality sex scene with grandpa Wookie takes the cake.

    Lol...I always forget how bizarre it really is...I mean...there's a whole very long scene just with wookies growling and no subtitles.

    I remember watching this when I was 8 years old. It made no sense to me at that age & it makes less sense now.

    I remember being awed over the animated sequence with Boba Fett and feeling really uncomfortable with Harvey Korman, Bea Arthur and Carrie Fisher singing at the end.

    It is utterly terrible, and I've never been able to watch it start to finish. I usually get some "so bad it's funny" chuckles from the early scenes with Chewie's family grunting and shrieking at each other, but that's about it. My favorite part is seeing a somewhat stoned Leia singing at the end.

    I believe that this segment was re-released in an uncut and longer format at some point. It escaped the Star Wars holiday special in essence.

    As for my feelings towards the special itself, I hate to say it but I do not think it is anywhere near as bad as people like to think of it as. A lot of fun is to be had making fun of it for its faults, but its never offensive degrading towards anyone.

    i tend to save my hate for something sexist or racist....
