It isn't. Chewie has a family, yes, but nothing that happened in the special is canon.

Noted. Ah well, probably all for the best that that thing is out of our universe.

You might not believe it, but I'm watching the whole thing right now because of this thread. I couldn't stop laughing at the little wookiee with the x-wing in his hand..

I've only watched it once in its entirely, it's pretty crap but I've seen worse. And I've also seen much better "anti-tainment" too, it doesn't really fall under the "so bad it's good" because the acting's ok for what it is (it's a variety show after all) and most of the costuming and set design is fine (the wookie costumes are a hell of a lot higher quality than the glass-eyed, cardboard-toothed, loose-fitting Ewok costumes in their two TV movies); its main issues are that the comedy's not funny, the original sound design is dreadful, it's overly long with long stretches of nothing but subtitle-free wookie-noises, Mark Hammill looks like a sex doll vandalised with crayons, and above-all it's really quite boring (the guest scenes just drag). I didn't mind the cantina scene though, got a nice Vauderville cabaret vibe to it. Plus I do believe that according to the new book, From a Certain Point of View, Bea Arthur's character of Ackmena is now not just canon... but a lesbian too. So that's really progressively cool for the franchise.

    Curious questions -

    1. Does Disney actually own the rights to this?
    2. Is it possible George Lucas would have stipulated in the contract that they never release it if indeed they do now own it?
    3. If they do own it and and did re-release it, how well do you think it would actually sell as a novelty commodity among fans (would its infamy make money)?

    1. near as i can tell, Disney is the distributor. looks like it probably still belongs to 20th Century Fox.
    2. i think it's entirely possible that if Disney has the distribution license that they control it (whether specifically through Lucas or not, at the behest of Lucasfilm).
    3. i don't think the sales could justify the embarrassment. it has an underground life and that's where it belongs.
i think there's nothing wrong with taking what little good there is from this show and using it, but it really is a dreadfully dull and perplexing bit of television.
as someone who actually saw it on air, i can attest to the befuddlement it caused.
other than making me want a stuffed Bantha, enjoying Boba Fee, and feel vaguely disturbed by all the weird dancing, it left no particular impression on me.
i certainly had no desire to ever see it again, nor felt the lack of it for not returning.

truer words were never spoke ~ hahaha

I'm watching it on YouTube right now for the first time in quite a long time. I burned a dvd from a torrent file years ago but forgot I had it. Chewies family is hysterical (for all the wrong reasons, lol). Lumpy was actually recanonized in aftermath: Life debt as his full name, Lumpawaroo. The celebrity guests are mind boggling choices. Bea Arthur??? Isn't this around the time of Maude? How many star wars fans actually watched Maude? I can't help but laugh when i recall in the awful movie airheads when the hostage negotiations included a request for naked pics of bea Arthur to plant seeds for an insanity defense. I was only 2 when this came out, so I don't know what reception it got at first, but the fact it made it to tv in the first place says a lot about 70s drug use.

Only the planet of Kashyyyk, Chewie's family, and a few minor details that are included for Lucasfilm's amusement.

The night shift bartender, Chalmoon the owner, the bouncer & the short waitress r not canon? They were in the From A Certain Point Of View novel.

See: "a few minor details that are included for Lucasfilm's amusement".

Also, FACPOV is ambiguously canon in a number of places.

This video provides a surprisingly detailed description of the development process of the Holiday Special.

I have a co-worker that I talk to a lot about Star Wars and he introduced me to the Holiday Special earlier this year. It was awful, of course, but I was still glad to see it just so I know it.
