When I saw the crown I immediately started wondering if there was an significance to it in the movie, or was it just something he was wearing for laughs inbetween takes. I guess we'll have to wait and see. While many people speculate that DJ stands for Dark Jedi, I do wonder how interesting it might be (albeit implausible given his age) what if the DJ character was a former Ren. What if he was a Ren before Kylo... what if he was an apprentice of Snoke before. That might make for some interesting dynamics. Implausible? Sure. Just about every speculation I have offered here is, but it would be interesting at least.

 

Is it a crown or a hat with gold fabric on outside I thought it was a hat.

My working theories:

Ducain (matches publicity photo, could be a setup for Episode 9)
Ezra (it's a stretch but maybe - we don't know what happens at the end of Rebels)

Personally I am hoping he's the body model for a CG Thrawn and the publicity photo is a misdirection

Benecio Del Toro's character the decoder (whose name was "DJ" and yet I do not recall ever hearing his name being said) was a waste of a good character. When Finn and Rose were attempting to escape the FO ship, it would have been nice to see Decoder Jerk save them on the walker. That would have spared us the ridiculous decision to have BB8 operating the walker :'( Good opportunity for character redemption flushed down the toilet. And he can't make an appearance in IX because we assume he died when the ship was obliterated.

I understood it as he was leaving immediately on the ship that the FO promised him.

 

His nickname is "Don't Join" DJ.


He's only on the side that suits himself. A true neutral.

What happened with DJ--his philosophy of taking a "neutral" stance which eventually leads to Rose and Finn's near-death--had a huge impact on Finn's character development. Without DJ, we still have a Finn who cares about people but refuses to commit to a cause. Now we have Finn the "rebel scum" who is willing to die to save the cause.
