Star Wars Celebration revealed the names of two of the major factions in The Force Awakens: the Resistance, who SEEM to represent the next generation of the Rebel Alliance from the original trilogy, and the First Order, who appear to be the heir to the Empire. What is the political scope at the time of As far as Episode VII where will this lead into Episode VIII and beyond.

-But are these the only political entities in the new Star Wars movies?
-What is their relationship to each other?
    -Is there a New Republic?
-What happened to the Empire and does it still exist?
-How will that effect Episode VIII?
Will there be changes from the Force Awakens to Episode VIII.

I chose to put this in the EPISODE VIII thread because I wanted to discuss the possible changes and where this is all going!!

If I recall, there's a new republic, but it's complacent about the First Order's shenanigans. Thus, Leia forms the resistance as a non-official military splinter to be ready in case the First Order does any Empire-esque foolery. I think the events of TFA will violate whatever the agreement was, and there will be a new galactic conflict to fuel the next two movies.

I think the First Order is a faction within the Empire that rises to power based on the promise of restoring the Empire's glory.
