Having someone do a voice of a CGI character or even motion capture ought to be done by either a great voice-actor who is good at movement OR a star (preferably with a unique voice).

I don't know why Lupita wasn't in the film using her body instead of being behind CGI.

She is not yet a known actress, so her name can't get people to see the film and with Yoda, she does not have the ability to do a unique voice since she's not a voice-actor.

So I just don't understand what the thinking was having her behind CGI. It makes sense for Andy Serkis but I don't really get it for Lupita.

She sounds really wise. I'm guessing that's the reason she was cast.

At some bits, yes I agree....in other bits, it seems a bit overdoing.

I would have just liked to see Lupita ACTUALLY appear, and see her...I guess

She sounds like she can be inspiring, and that is so very important.

Yoda: "Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And we'll you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. It's energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings we are, not this crude matter. You must feel the force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship."

When Yoda gets into these lines of dialogue, it didn't matter what his voice sounded like, the energy and inspiration came through to the audience in a profound and resonating way. No matter what voice Maz's speculated character has, she has to inspire the audience and fill them with energy. I'm betting Lupita Nyongo can accomplish this.

If anything, she has been really busy in Hollywood. Three upcoming Disney titles alone with her name on it. If she survives Episode VII, that's even more exposure on top of what she has. She was in "12 Years A Slave" and that really boosted her career. I think she may be back as a Yoda-like character in at least Episode VIII and maybe IX, but that's a stretch.

First off, she's a pretty big name. Second, Disney animated films use a ton of stars that aren't traditionally voice actors.

Having said that, I can't imagine how the voice, the face and the supposed age of the character is supposed to sync up. She sounds way too young for the role. Fingers crossed on this one.

She has stole the show and my heart in the trailer, and we have not even seen her character yet. Her timeless charisma is why she was chosen for the role. Why would it matter?

Maybe they cast her in a Mo-cap role BECAUSE of her incredible range as an actress. Ever thought of that?

Why oh why did Maurice Evans, an accomplished Shakespearian actor, have to appear in 1968's Planet of the Apes as a FOAM LATEX character!

I'd say the actual problem with Maz Kanata is, well, that she's a CGI character. In a decade or so, the character won't look as convincing as a real actress or puppet.

You know... I was just re-watching the Lord of the Rings The Two Towers recently, and Gollum totally holds up. (and in the most important way: I still believed Gollum as a character!).

And that movie's 13 years old!

Caesar in the recent Planet of the Apes movies, is absolutely convincing as an ape.

Remember that the man responsible for all these characters, Andy Serkis -- THE go-to guy for performance capture, is not only performing, he's supervising the performance capture tech in Star Wars The Force Awakens.

Star Wars will hold up just fine. :)

Let's hope so, I agree Gollum hasn't aged that badly (compared to Jar Jar Binks or that gnome/sprite-thingy in Harry Potter), so yeah. Let's hope they get Snoke and Maz right.

Lupita Nyong'o won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "12 Years a Slave". Is that not enough?

Yes, she does have a pretty name, I agree. However, I think her voice will pull off an older character with wisdom. It sounds great to me so far! OAN, they are splicing the hell out of the dialog.....lol
