Discuss the writer and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII here. While there is no official word on Johnson yet, there were plenty of hints that he will direct Episode VIII. He is also expected to write a treatment for Episode IX and probably direct it as well. This is still to be confirmed.

I love Looper, and his episode of Breaking bad was really good, so I have faith in his abilities. I can't see him directing two sequels though! Won't production start on 9 while 8 is still in post?

Yes, Johnson will be too busy with Episode VIII to prep and direct Episode IX. The schedule for production limits the possibility of the same director directing two films in a row.

I actually still don't understand the choices of new directors. Johnson hasn't really done enough to prove himself worthy of such a massive task, so far as I can tell (didn't like Looper at all, it was another sci-fi film with such a lot of potential that fell flat on its face), and the guys put into play for directing the spin-offs aren't really up to much either. Just seems odd to give such massive, daunting tasks with so much pressure to such uninspiring directors.... I can't help but worry that Disney are just going to churn out any old junk to rake the cash in. :(

Edgar Wright, on the other hand.... :D

I like this choice. Really looking forward to it. Loved Looper and the Ozymandias episode

If he can build the tension in EpVIII the way he did in Ozymandias it will be a fantastic middle chapter. I don't think I've ever been more tense and glued to the TV than I was watching that hour of television. And that was even with knowing spoilers of how the episode ended. Just shows how well he crafted it.

Oh yeah, and Looper was great too.

Ironically I just finished BINGE watching Breaking Bad -- the entire series. It was very well done, but Johnson's episodes stood out because I think they were the most "experimental."

I have to say, Johnson's episodes of Breaking Bad are all excellent. Even "Fly" which a lot of people disliked because it was a departure from the normal format of the show. It was an excellent bit of drama because it takes a very good director to make an entire episode with only one or two characters interesting. You really get a glimpse into Walt's mind and I really like his willingness to take risks. It's what the PT needs. I think this movie is in good hands. Say what you want about Looper too, but that movie had fun with itself. It didn't get bogged down with logistics, and it had a good mix of humor and seriousness.

It's a daunting task for anybody but he'll also be surrounded by people that know what they're doing.

Definitely! Kathleen Kennedy and the Star Wars story group will make sure that the story he writes and the treatment for IX will be one cohesive entity.

I like the director's they've gotten on board so far. Gareth and Rian Johnson are fledgling directors who have proven themselves with Godzilla and Looper, respectively. Now lets just hope Johnson doesn't use time travel in Ep. 8 :p

I believe episode XIII will feature prominently the new cast and less of the original. They'll have one movie under their belt and be more comfortable in their roles. Can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does with them.

BTW here's something interesting. I've heard that the initial plan was Johnson to direct both Episode VIII and IX. It was a done deal. Actually it was supposed to be officially announced by now. But for some reason the announcement was postponed. I have no idea what happened but I have a feeling that things changed and Johnson will only be directing VIII. Maybe they already have an idea for another director for Episode IX? Who knows. I'm just going to speculate and say that Abrams' friend Edgar Wright looks like the perfect candidate. Especially after he was seen with the Episode VII director and some cast members together...

How about the Wachowskis, Katheryn Bigelow, Spike Lee, Guillermo Del Toro, or George Lucas?

Isn't there still the possibility of Abrams directing Ep.IX? It may depend a little on how this one turns out but I'd think he is still in the running unless he totally blows it. Just a thought.
And off topic a bit but in the Johnson interview he said that they have release dates already. If VIII starts filming in latter 2015 maybe they'll revert back to a May 2017 release?

I seriously hope that they give it to Edgar Wright. He's proven himself to be a really decent action flick director and has a good eye for locations, camera angles, and lighting.

Of course, there's also another possible reason why Johnson isn't directing IX.... Maybe he's been snapped up for something else and isn't going to be able to schedule in time for another production. OK, I personally would make the time for it, but then doesn't that potentially mean that he's got something bigger and better to do? That's the only reason I can come up with for him not clearing his desk for the chance to direct another SW movie. Who knows....?

You might be right on this assessment, but I still can't see Disney making a decision before E7 comes out. I would think they would want JJ back after he breaks the all-time box office records! LOL :p

I can also see the reason to have someone else do 8 and 9 is the cause the plan is 8 and 9 to come out every 2 years and if you remember it took Lucas 3 years to write the script and do the whole movie and they probably don't want the script or movie rushed. See now Johnson can start early on episode 8 and really take his time same with whoever is doing Episode 9 so to me its a smart movie by Disney .
