what i can say is that Rian Johnson is perfect for ep 8 .
they chose him because ep8 will need a certain emotional tone that is darker compared to force awakens.

it saddens me that these filmmakers care so little about the 3D aspect of these films

If you guys have some time to kill, you should read the script for Rian Johnson's last movie, LOOPER. It's a pretty good script, and he published a near final version online on his website. Cheers. :D

So, JJ has read the script and is sorry he's not directing...hyperbole or not, this is promising! I think Daisy said the same thing. It's funny how the time between the two episodes is so much shorter than JJ had to make TFA. I hope the shorter time doesn't impact the story at all.

The time is shorter but he's been working on pre-production for quite a while now already, so for me that's not much of a worry.

I agree. Thats the main reason ( I think ) all of the directors for future films went to London so everyone is on the same page for continuanty and to get a jump on each of their episodes.

Not sure if anyone heard the last few MSW podcasts but in one of them Jason talked about how Rian Johnson was more involved in TFA than we think. Could have even directed a scene or two...if that's the case, Rian should be able to easily transition from TFA to Episode 8 and make a great film!

I did wonder if any of Johnson's footage from September
at Skellig made it's way into the ending scene of TFA.

Interesting! I'm digging the vintage vibe!

Hmmm... considering there was only like 10 theaters that could show native IMAX... at this point I'm thinking what's the point? That roll out was so disappointing... I would have had to drive 6 hours to see 70mm IMAX :(

Though... perhaps at some point in time (like I'm talking 10-30 years from now) displays might not be restricted to screens, so maybe people will be able to watch large scale projection without need of a screen at home. I would be appreciative of those efforts at that point in time assuming I could afford that hypothetical device.

I hear that... though you know... I think in many ways the 3D in TFA was superior to Avatar which was natively shot in 3D. With exception I'd say the 3D was less dramatic in close up dialogue scenes.

With CGI'd scenes it doesn't matter... that up close Star Destroyer shot was AMAZAZING.

You know what's interesting is I didn't really notice any film grain in TFA.
35 mm still looks fantastic, as far as I can tell there is no superior medium at this point (digital was merely catching up to film over the last decade).

But one thing that could change the ball game would be high frame rate cameras. I know the Hobbit caught a lot of flak for HFR use, though according to a recent interview with Douglas Trumbull (he did the special effects for 2001 space odyssey) Peter Jackson did HFR in the wrong way (something with the L/R image orientation).

Douglas designed his own theater system which he's presenting to film studios/ distributors this month... supposedly it's a far superior experience to what we get now. This guy helped pioneer a lot of the old time 70mm formats... very cool stuff.

There was a thread that was something like "rian Johnson has a big hole to fill", but I can't find it, so I'm responding here. My reply would be, why? Why should he "clean up JJs mess"? While I agree there are many holes in TFA, some intensional, some not so much, why is it on him to answer every question? If it were me, I'd make the movie I wanna make. Pick the things I wanna address, and ignore the others. He has ONE opportunity to make a Star Wars movie and he's gonna spend it trying to explain what the previous guy did? I wouldn't do that....

There are no plot holes or messes... Star Wars is all about raising new questions for the next film to answer. Like obviously... ROTJ left a lot of us wondering.
