I have to say it, Rian is taking the heat of a small group of toxic fans like a champ, he is so cool, i dont know how is he doing it, and he takes the time to explain his decisions

Regardless of what people think of The Last Jedi, Rian seems like a genuinely funny, cool, nice person who really loves making movies and being a part of geek culture.

Speaking of flare, is it just me or was there some nods to JJ:

After Star Trek, I needed an eye exam because there were so many lens flares. I was almost blind.

His homages are dangerous to your health.

RJ was wise and left them out. He is better director /sarcasm.

I think it has more to do with his love for American New Wave than JJ. ;)

    I don't mind flares, actually.
The only time I'm bothered isn't by flares, but by overexposure (which...these days is rarely authentic and usually accomplished on purpose). I don't mind some overexposure shots, where the idea is to see the sillouette - X-Files did this often and it works in that environment. It's a common go-to for mystery - hiding something in plain view.

However, other times it's just a giant friggen mess.
    Like...this:

    There's no benefit to this.
It's not just a matter of lens flare. The entire image is practically washed out and you can't even see the expression fully of the actor.
And there's nothing being hidden, and the background is entirely out of focus, so there's basically...nothing to look at.

THIS...I hate, and it causes me to take the film or show FAR less seriously immediately.
It's like when I listen to music and I hear that what has been done is the artist slapped a limiter on 0dbs and just slammed everything up to maximum blowout on every track because they wanted it "loud". Oh...cool. *shakes head*

    But I love flare - it's pretty. :)
And I love how Abrams uses his ...though he finally did it...he hit a "too much point"; admitting that Star Trek 09 went a bit too far in quantity of flares, lol.
I disagree with him on that, however. Star Trek, to me, with the way it was designed, should have been very glossy like the world's shiniest iPhone on steroids.
It fits the styles of the universe that's in that film, so while he thought he over-did it, I have to say I don't know about that.

But I can say that no matter how rampant Abrams employs flares, he really never does this garbage like the above still.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

    JJ has his flares.
    Spielberg has his spotlights.
    Woody has his step daughters.

    Every director has their thing....

A "small ground of toxic fans"? That group is a lot bigger than you seem to think.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about people who are directly attacking him on twitter at a personal level. Not people that dislike the movie.

Reminds me of a quote from The Silence of the Lambs (slightly paraphrased):

Clarice, doesn't this seem desperate - like the elaborations of a bad liar?

    Ta,

I hear you, but the guy is a professional storyteller. I'm not sure how much enthusiasm a writer/director would have for rehashing EU story lines.

TLJ is full of metaphors about the past...

    Rey metaphor.gif

And who knows, the backlash may have been worse if fans were presented with something good but unoriginal!

If you want to see the Q&A Rian did with Collider last week but didn't want to watch the awful smartphone version, here's the YouTube version (with surprisingly many nice comments.)
