Noooo... Sounds like it's further away than I expected. It's weird to hear that especially since there were comments suggesting some pre-pre-preproduction is underway. Not to mention he said that he doesn't really need a break before jumping back into it (one of the reasons being how early TLJ was done).

I'm wondering what "writing a couple of other small things" mean. Writing for somebody else to direct isn't his kind of thing (maybe it's a first, who knows), unless he's writing stuff that'll sit in a drawer for a long time. If he's writing something that he intends to direct before his next Star Wars then, goddamn, that's not what I wanted to hear.

If I had a question to the director it would be that one.

How couldn't you see that the scene with Rey, Luke and the saber wasn't the same that at the end of Ep VII ? This is mind blowing to me.

 

He won't be back.

Yeah, reading that sounds like he's not coming back. This makes me somewhat happy.

 

Agreed. Although I have my discrepancies with TLJ, I don't wish to anyone this kind of radical threats/opinions.


About the article, I have an opinion.
He says: "“Mark and I were both very respectful of each other. It didn’t bother me that he spoke out about it.”

I think Hamill was more respectful in this. He mentioned it, with good manners, trying to make understand the director this was not the best option but he would give the best he could (as seen in some interviews). And he absolutely gave it. Hamill did a really really great job.
But I think If the actor who had told this had been Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Di Caprio, Christian Bale or Robert Downey Jr,.. to name just a few more influential actors, i think they could have changed some aspects of the movie (or at least of the character, probably for good, probably not). I think the director didn't give much credit/reputation to Hamill. He shared a bigger Ego in this, in my opinion. He didn't bother him that Hamill spoke about it, but he neither didn't do nothing about it.
I'm not saying he was disrespectful with Hamill as a person (I have no doubt), only he didn't listen carefully his opinions and he was straight to his idea (which I respect too), not allowing some (possibly) positive opinions for the movie.

I don't understand why people think he's not coming back based on this quote. There's nothing in the quote about him quiting.

 

Just...let them have this. They need it.

 

It's because what he did with the Last Jedi, it was the only plausible reason (psychologically speaking) he found on why Luke was exiled in that place and not helping the resistance or his friends, I do not think Rian had many options either, coming from what what Han said in ep 7 (Luke felt responsible and walked away from everything). It seems to me that in the documentary they showed several times both having conversations about the character. And as mentioned, it is not the first time that director and actor disagree in the characterization of a character, or the fate of this one, Harrison Ford asked George Lucas about the possibility of killing his character in The Empire Strikes Back, because he felt tha his character was done and would add more gravitas to the other characters, and George told him NO

 

Yeah but that's totally different because George.
