Honestly...if I was any major public figure, I wouldn't have any social media sites.
It's just not worth it, and the tools in those systems aren't well formed for that level of frequent interaction.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Say what you will about The Last Jedi, but I have nothing but respect for Rian Johnson. It appears that he hasn't let the negativity get to him and he seems like an all around good guy, whether or not you like TLJ.

Eh. I mean, seriously, why does it matter? Oh no... she deleted her Instagram account. The horror. Nope... the needle of my care meter still hasn't moved. I'm old enough to remember a time before the Internet and truly not care who does or does not post on it. Kids these days get so wrapped up in what people write about them. The only thing running does is show they got to you. Do what normal folks do and toss them a block and move on.

If you can't stand the heat and know how to deal with it, you shouldn't be on this Internet Machine, and she probably did the right thing by deleting it and getting away from it. Maybe she goes the full Simon Cowell and ditches the phone entirely. Maybe she moves out to the middle of sub-Saharan Africa and lives out of a hut with nobody around for 100 miles.

As I said.. does it really matter?

I could bet my other hand that they are ALT Right americans for the vast majority like Breitbart readers. They basically hate everything on Earth.

If something isn't important to you, it doesn't mean that it's not important to other people.
And it matters, because it shows that there are right and wrong ways to deal with frustration. And because, if you consider yourself a part of Star Wars fandom, incidents like this can affect how people view the fandom, and thus by extention - yourself.

I consider myself a fan. You can keep the whole 'fandom' baloney. I mean, when do we start having dues and carrying cards for this mythical 'fandom' group? HOHO I AM PART OF STAR WARS FANDOM. Yeah... no.

Just give me great Star Wars movies. Keep the tribalism.

The "why" she deleted her doesn't bother you at all? It's part of a growing problem with the fandom as whole. Angry people who can't get over a movie five months out, feel like they have the right to verbally abuse someone? I'm willing to bet she's been dealing with this for months, and one person said something and that set her off.

You're a part of the fandom whether you like it or not. By simply being associated with this forum you're apart of it. Do you not see that?

Not really. Seems every day some celeb or another is cancelling Instagram or Facebook or w/e for some reason or another.

Bad films? I don't recall people having issues with Chadwick Boseman or Letitia Wright. I'm sure there are some, but they were awesome.

You'll always have people that want to use public access to try to take out their frustrations. Toss a block and move on. If a celeb can't handle the heat, then by all means stop posting. But making a spectacle out of yourself doing it? Turning it into a Huge Deal? That just feeds the trolls. Can you imagine how happy those folks must be right now? I mean, you're giving them everything they want.

Can you imagine how happy her PR rep must be? Free marketing all around.

You want to know how cynical I am per Hollywood? She probably just paid someone to handle her social media George Takei-style, and then her PR rep had them delete the accounts as a PR move to raise her visibility. Hell, Lucasfilm staff probably suggested it as a neat way to take the heat off the fact a Star Wars movie just died at the box office. I rarely take anything concerning that town on face value. There is money to be made here and issues to be flogged.

The only real issue that needs flogging, is how we can get great Star Wars Movies? How can we Make Star Wars Great Again? (lightsaber)

Not really.. no. Resistance isn't futile. I will not be assimilated. I simply don't view 'fandom' as some type of horde that we have to 'protect' from looking bad or whatever. It annoys me to no end when people try to group themselves under some banner. Trekkers.. Whovians... Potheads... Avatards... Bronies…

You can't just think for yourself and be your own person?

    @ScumAndVillainy

Honestly? I'm not mad at you. Or saddened by you. What I feel is more akin to disgust for your obvious disregard for a young woman being harassed and threatened, and your comments going forward have only reinforced that initial feeling.

Like a movie or don't. I don't care. But standing aside and allowing vitriol like this to go unchallenged puts you on the exact same level as those that actually carried out the act.

And, speaking of PR, nice job trying to bring the conversation around to how "bad" the new movies are. Not blatant or heavy-handed at all; it blended in so seamlessly with this wider conversation about harassment of public figures and the line between an actor and the character they play.

    Dear Cantina patrons

I appreciate there's debate to be had, but please be mindful of the fact that this is 'the Rian Johnson thread' and move these conversations to an appropriate thread or PM so that things get back on topic.

    Grazie.

Bad films is NOT an excuse to attack someone as a PERSON. Well then get off the forum then, because your mere association with it means you're part of the fandom.

1st part.. absolutely. 2nd part.. you're better than that bro. that's attacking the guy for having an opinion you don't like. don't bite.. although that's easier said than done in the current climate lol ;)

to assist with the @Lazarus Dei request to get back on topic, i'd like to throw this out there...

bearing in mind where the characters were at the end of TFA, and the fact that TLJ had to continue on exactly from where TFA left off.. is there a movie that Rian Johnson could have made that wouldn't have caused 6 months of spiteful and vitriolic posts across all social media platforms (including here at the Cantina)?

i'm not asking someone who didn't like TLJ to say what RJ could have done to make them like the movie. I'm asking everyone to consider the expectations, hopes and worries of every single member of this forum going into TLJ... is there a movie that RJ could have made that would have been more widely accepted and not caused so many splinters among us?

i've thought about it long and hard, and my conclusion is that whatever he made.. we would still have been where we are now. It may have been different voices shouting about their displeasure.. but we would still be where we are.

The contrasting (and often argumentative) views of where the story would go and what would happen to the characters in the time coming up to the release of TLJ were becoming so extreme.. vast numbers of members were saying "if this happens i'm out" and "if this doesn't happen to this character the whole saga has been destroyed".

what we see on the forum today, and the negative judgments made toward Rian Johnson were going to happen no matter what film he made.

    in my opinion.

please share your thoughts (and nicely please.. we've had quite enough of the other stuff) :)

No, because you can't please everyone. There will always be people who dislike stuff while other people like the exact same stuff. Furthermore people seem to forget the reactions for TFA. It was quite similar compared with TLJ, but after an amount of time it settled.

Even though I think there was a much, much better sequel to TFA possible, it would still have been very divisive.

The "what" she did isn't the issue, its the why. The heat it the kitchen is irrelevant. What matters is that people do not have the right to harass or to be rude and disrespectful to someone they do not know just because they did not like something. For the average person such as yourself and I, it is easy to block/ignore things like this on a daily bases, but I would imagine being an actor/actress that has hundreds or thousands of people being rude and disrespectful on social media is a slightly different story. Just my thoughts and concerns.

that just prove his point, that's why Hayden just retired ( for a period of time) of acting, Jake got a lot of mental issues, and Ahmed Best suffered, because that special portion of the fandom
