Watched it again with my kids and it does change one’s perspective.

Some of the minor issues that really grated first time round (Poe’s 30 second back story and Fin’s handled in the same way) did not bother me as much this time round.

Kylo/Ben being reduced to John Wick still irritated.

But still the major gripe is the whole Emperor/Palpatine family history plot shoehorned in. I think having watched it a second time that is the major flaw with the film.

Cover me Wedge, I’m going in!

The spoiler-free reviews I’ve read aren’t encouraging BUT I’m entering with an open mind, as much optimism as possible and without too much spoiler knowledge. See y’all in a few hours.

I really liked it. It's not perfect but it has the Star Wars vibe from start to finish. It is packed with action but I think it's ep 8 and 9 packed in one movie.

It answers the plotlines that were in ep 7 and it's done with a perfect respect for the audience, the SW Universe and George Lucas work.

    4/5.

I absolutely didn't expect anything from it and I had a very good time.

The abridged version of my review (yes, this is the abridged version) goes as below:

It was the most Star Wars in a Star Wars movie I've ever seen. I'd rate it a 6.5 or 7/10. Good but not great. Enjoyable but not really rewatchable for me. It ranks the lowest of the ST three, and probably ties RO.

I can remember laughing out loud at certain points in the movie, but I can barely remember when or why.

This was a weird movie where I sympathized with all the sides. I could see exactly where fans who didn't like it came from, as I'm probably more towards that side. But I can also see the sheer appeal in this movie, as all of my friends did.

But the more I think about the movie - and the trilogy as a whole - the less it works. The themes fall flat, the story actually makes the OT even more depressing, and the characters have way too much controversy for so little reason. There were so many problems from the start. Some could have been avoided, others not so much. But in the end it tries to rise up beyond the sum of its parts. Whether it succeeds or not depends on the individual.

I've also come to the conclusion that I can't not like a JJ Abrams movie, even if I don't think it's that good.

This movie needed to be longer.

I don't think TLJ did TFA dis-service specially, but I also didn't feel that Poe or Finn's arcs were much developed. I think if TLJ had answered a few more questions or pried into their backstories more, it would put less burden to finalize "everything" in TROS.

And for the record, I liked TLJ just fine. I actually loved everything about the arcs for Rey, Ben, Luke and Snoke.

I honestly didn't expect to like this movie. I didn't want to dislike it, I'd just seen too many subpar reactions. However, I thought most of the criticism -- and yes, some was definitely warranted -- was a bit overblown. I really had a good time watching it! I learned a long time ago to suspend belief for a couple hours as an adult going into a SW flick. After all, I'll never be eight years old coming out of TESB again. So while the plot was rather flimsy, the movie moved a little too fast for my taste and one cameo in particular I groaned at, it felt more like a SW film in theme and heart than any in the Disney trilogy have.

I'm not going to rush out again tomorrow for a second viewing but I will most likely see it again before it leaves theaters. So tonight I'm a pretty happy camper!

Here's another spoiler free thought- if you haven't bought tickets, dont bother spending the extra on 3d. It adds nothing and maybe even takes away in that it takes some of the definition away from some scenes.

Same-ish. But that's also because that what RJ cared about. My fundamental problems I'll get into below (but RJ is a master at tension, and his film is straight up gorgeous).

To me RJ misunderstood both of those characters.

Poe, while a daring pilot, had DESERVED his reputation, and was both inspirational and likeable (his comradery with Finn, his affection for BB-8, and his obvious respect for Leia). His willingness to die for the cause was admirable. RJ...well...RJ reduced him down to "arrogant hotshot pilot." Which, taken in the big scope makes sense since Poe probably would act out if he felt trapped. But at the same time, it limited Poe as a character.

Finn...oh Finn. Finn was the heart of the new trio. His roles in TFA and TROS prove that. But RJ reduced him down to comic relief. Finn didn't need to fight Phasma again, because he outsmarted her last time, turned her into a traitor, and ultimately gained independence. It was a victory in terms of plot, character, and emotion, with a little extra fanservice thrown in. His fight was redundant (and beyond that insultingly short and mostly done without Finn doing much). Then there's Canto Bight...Finn didn't need to learn that he didn't need to join either side as he LITERALLY ATTEMPTED TO RUN AWAY IN THE LAST MOVIE. Nor did Finn need too much pushing to join the Resistance. He was already friends with Poe, and wasn't likely to abandon him without trying to help - especially if he's attached to Rey and Rey joined the Resistance (which she all but did).

RJ's goal was to give each of the characters the hardest thing they could hear. But none of that was satisfactory in the end.
Rey already heard her hardest thing in TFA. Her parents aren't coming back. Hearing that they were no one doesn't matter, because they were someone to her.

Finn learning "live free, don't join" doesn't matter, because he already tried that, but willingly put it aside for Rey.

Poe hearing "just follow orders," makes no sense, because that's what he does.

Amen! Although...having a plan and having directors know the plan would have also helped out too.

Saw it last night, and LOVED it (I was very down on the franchise after TLJ to the point where I didn't care about Episode 9 the same way I would get hyped in the past). Let me be frank, the movie gave me everything I wanted, and it also gave me a few things I didn't want but I ended up liking. I can understand fans that don't like fan-service, but this was GREAT fan-service, IMO. There was a thread posted earlier this year about skipping TLJ in your canon, and I was dead set against it despite hating that movie. But I really think that I can seamlessly watch TFA and TROS and not skip a beat as I can pretend TLJ was an EU novel that I just never read. TROS finally made me get over my TLJ hangover the same TFA got me over the PT hangover. I can finally move on from TLJ. LOL

Overall, I LOVE the ending as they respected every character in the Saga and JJ hit a homerun in that respect. I can finally close the door on SW for me as I have been a fan since 1977. I don't care about The Mandalorian, don't really care what movies they release in the future, I passed the torch last night to the younger fans cause my heroes finally passed the torch too. My Saga is Episode 4,5,6,7,9 and I'm cool with that because nobody is ever going to like every movie from a franchise.

I really look forward to talking about TROS in the spoiler threads because there is ALOT to talk about. :)

Seeing this in about 5 hours. One question I have:

Is it ever revealed how Maz got Luke's old lightsaber from Bespin?

I have not seen the movie yet but I have not seen any indications that it is addressed. In the grand scope of the trilogy it is a minor detail and with all that appears to be packed into the movie I don’t see how they would have any time to address it. From a historical perspective, the initial Forceback scene in TFA was going to show how she got it before JJ changed up the Forceback. In the initial version it was in being used against Kylo and the KOR when they were decimating the “clan”. Maz took it from that battle. I believe that the line in TFA where she says that is a story for another day is meant as just a throw away line to Han implying that there is no time to discuss it at the moment. I don’t think it was ever meant to be implied that it was going to be discussed further in the trilogy.

Seeing it Monday night with much of my family. It's nice to see the positive reviews coming from fans. Critics don't seem to like it. In fact the Rotten Tomatoes ratings (which I take with a grain of salt) are basically showing a reverse of TLJ. For me I just want to be entertained and have fun at the theater. I was on the fence about TLJ when I first saw it, not because of Luke or portrayal of any character, but I was jarred from how vastly different the movie was from TFA. I had a similar reaction when I was a kid and first watched TESB. Empire and Last Jedi are now my 2 favorite films in the saga. Many would be wise to remember and review the Rotten Tomato scores for the Prequel Trilogy. With the exception of the critics liking ROTS, all 3 movies were given poor scores and most fans were underwhelmed by by what Lucas himself gave them. So lets go easy on Disney and JJ, and Rian and Kennedy, ect, as overall, they have created a new trilogy that has gotten more positive reviews from fans than what Lucas got for his last kick at the can. It amazes me when fans are screaming that Lucas must come back to rescue the franchise, when most were holding the door for him to leave after the prequels.

My only complaint for this prequel trilogy has been an apparent lack of overall planning and rushing. However, from what I have heard, JJ manages to pull it together enough to make it work and finish of the Saga with a mostly satisfying end. I will see this Monday for myself, but one thing I can assure to all... regardless of the movie and my feeling towards it, my childhood will still be intact, Disney and Lucas Film will still not owe me anything, and I will be forevere great-full that we have had a chance to experience a Skywalker adventure in a Galaxy Far Far away, one last time.

    Cheers and happy viewing! :)

Really enjoyed it, cried the whole last 45 minutes or so. I had a few problems, and it screamed JJ all over, but it was good just a bit rushed. Boobilo and the Sith Troopers at least got a few more seconds than Constable Zuvio.
