After reading the rules & regulations of the forum, I have to say that I'm disappointed.

They seem to be crafted to suppress vibrant discourse and enforce likemindedness, where everyone is required to say and think the same things about everything.

Now, this is a private forum, so it's understandable that no national constitution would be honored here. Besides, the only thing the 1st Amendment protects anyone from is being put into jail for unpopular speech. It doesn't protect you from being thrown out of someone's house, or guarantee membership in every club, or from being banned from a forum. But I digress.

The rules say no trolling. However a specific definition of trolling ought to be provided, since the definition of trolling in 2014 has become so expansive, that anyone who posts a contrary or unpopular opinion is often accused of trolling, when in fact they aren't.

Now, when I see rules prohibiting sexism, red flags go up. I immediately wonder if it means genuine instances of sexism, or the expansive 2014 definition whereby criticizing the basic physics of a slight 94 pound girl sword fighting a 300 pound behemoth is considered sexist because girl power.

The most alarming aspect of the rules though, is the no bashing Star Wars aspect. I'm a lifelong fan of Star Wars. But certainly there are aspects of Star Wars that I like more than others, and still other aspects that I definitely dislike, such as the Holiday Special sans the Boba Fett cartoon. Are we to understand that everyone is required to put on a happy face and like all things Star Wars equally? If so, it's kind of disturbing.

POMOJEMA EDIT: For goodness' sake, please put a warning/spoiler tag before you post a disturbing image. Bear in mind that there are younger viewers who read this site.

Which brings me to the part where it says that disagreements will happen. How will disagreements happen when no criticism of any aspect of Star Wars is allowed? How can I disagree with anyone when I am required to think and say the same wonderful things about all things Star Wars that everyone else in the forum is?

Have we seriously reached the point in societal degradation where individuals can no longer tolerate reading criticism of some aspect of a movie or tv show they like without falling to pieces? Would Siskel & Ebert be able to make a living today?

Now, certainly the board owners are well within their rights to enforce any rules they like. It's their house. But it's still disappointing because it seems so intolerant, regressive, and unenlightened.

In regards to spoilers, frankly in my opinion I feel that those constantly crying about spoilers are really just looking for a way to get others to pay attention to them. If they were really interested in avoiding spoilers, then they wouldn't patron a forum or website that regularly publishes and discusses spoilers through the regular course of their daily affairs at all.

I'm going to assume roughly the same treatment of the comments section of this site will carry over to the forums. Except they'll weed out the people that go off on tangents. There were a couple of times gender debates, cruelty to fish, and OT vs PT got out of hand. So I assume some of those comments wouldn't be allowed here.

I assume again that we can say things like... I didn't like the prequels over abundant CGI and prefer the NT more resembles the OT. I can't see them getting bent out of shape over that. That or I'm about to be banned and this was the shortest sign-up in history for me lol.

Viral and the gang seem pretty reasonable. I'm fairly sure bashing will be limited to things like... The prequels are utter *Censored* I hope Lucas takes a long walk off a short pier! Only imagine that second part more than likely being worse given the standard Internet troll :p

I guess I don't really think that the image is all that disturbing. In fact I find that reaction to it more shocking than the image itself. It's a screenshot of Malcom McDowell in Stanley Kubrik's A Clockwork Orange, from 1971. It's a fairly common image that is seen just about everywhere on the internet in one context or another. My guess would be that younger viewers who read this site have seen far more disturbing images that have been published since 1971.

That sounds seemingly reasonable. My only argument is that such a thing ought to be articulated a bit more sspecifically perhaps.

It's more that the way you posted it was pretty in-your-face (seriously, that image is huge) rather than the content alone (after all, A Clockwork Orange is frankly pretty disturbing). I was mainly trying to make looking at it optional for the more squeamish viewers here.

Also, I needed to stretch my mod-muscles just to see how the interface of this forum works. (emperor) Nothing personal.

The rules don't bother me all that much. I expect that there will be a significant amount of common sense involved here. There's a difference between coming here and saying, "I think Episode I could have been a stronger movie if..." leading to a reasonable discussion, versus, "Episode I sucks!! Nobody with any taste could possibly love it!" I believe the goal here is to keep discussions mature and overly positive, without anyone feeling ostracized for liking something that is commonly bashed.

Yes, even the Christmas special. :)

...that's gonna get me banned, isn't it? :)

YEP. Wipe them out -- all of them.

Just kidding. You're previous post was absolutely correct -- common sense and civility will win the day. :)

Rules ain't a problem. The way they are articulated is. As @Djas Puhr rightly pointed out. First thing I do on any forum is reading
regulations. After reading regulations on this one I get impression that criticizing anything SW related is not allowed. I would really change that. :)

There seems to be more disappointing problems outlined in the FAQ, located here

    http://thecantina.starwars7news.com/index.php?threads/the-cantina-faqs.37/

    For instance:

Another phrase for "peer moderation" is "mob rule." So for instance going back to the problem of not clearly defining what exactly qualifies as sexist, the expansive definition of sexism in 2014 particularly among the inexperienced youth seems to be that any criticism of any female for any reason is sexist. So if someone were to say, "you know that lightsaber battle just wasn't believable because she's just so small," any sizable gaggle of feminists could mark that remark as sexist or unworthy simply because they disagree with them.

This will not ensure civility, but rather, will ensure the kind of barbaric collective mob mentality as depicted by angry villagers mindlessly chasing the monster with pitchforks and torches in any Frankenstein movie. I don't see this system being anything other than abused.

    You forget about this part:

Every online community is different and I can imagine that in relatively small community mods can manage to "shoot down" ppl who will abuse "peer moderation" system. So lets not assume worst case scenario. On the other hand if community grow in numbers peer moderation could be very tricky to control.

BTW it's really nice to see that administration changed regulation based on our feedback. Kudos to you :)

I don't disagree and it seems they've already changed it for clarification. I was just trying to be helpful. Never thought I'd get my first negative vote for an attempt at helping *sniffle* You found my kryptonite... or maybe I should say carbonite? It was inevitable I guess. Ah well. Buh bye short lived perfect record!

That was probably a mistake on my part.

I didn't understand if the pessimistic thing meant if your post was pessimisitic, or if I was pessimistic of your post. I meant it in the latter sense, but I think the forum has it set up to mean it in the former sense.

IF you feel you gave someone a rating in error you can always undo the rating and re-rate it. And, actually, thank you for bringing this issue up as we can clarify it in the FAQs.

So, apparently around 3:00 a.m. this morning, I had some posts deleted. How can I find out which posts were deleted and why?

I don't believe there's any way of retrieving deleted posts and a record of why they were deleted. I'll do some research and IF I find a reason I will PM you.
