The secrecy of TFA is really starting to suck

Sometimes I find myself asking the question if Disney and JJ Abrams have gone way overboard with keeping things so secret. I really don't know what you guys think but for me it's really starting to suck big time and instead of getting me really pummped what it is doing is getting on my nerves. You see, I have always thought it dumb to try to be so secretive about something like a movie. To keep major plotlines a secret is ok but to reach a point where they don't even want to put Luke in a poster? I remember the time when The Phantom Menace came out and there was all sort of neat merchandise that made you want to see the movie even more. There were really neat books and magazines with all sorts of pictures and I would marvel at all those amazing creatures from the Podrace scene and at all those cool looking Jedi from the Jedi council and that would pump me even more as I couldn't wait for the movie to arrive. Even as a kid I recall the same happening with the OT as I had a ANH picturebook and the classic little storybook that came with the record that you changed the page when R2 beeped.

Yet here we are with only 18 days to go to finally watch the movie on the big screen and to this point we don't even have a figure of Han Solo or Leia from the movie. No awesome picture books, no neat magazines about the movie, no novel and not even a few decent fotos of minor characters such as PZ-4CO, Sarco Plank or even the Happabore. I see all of this and I really wish it will all be worthwhile on the long run. A part of me wants to think that there are so many awesome things in store for us and that after the movie comes out we are going to see tons of new toys and merchandise of characters that are really fantastic but that they were kept a secret till the final moment yet still there is a tiny place in my heart that is saying that this may not happen and that Disney is going to screw things up. Seeing how Disney has not even aproved a Happabore or a Luggabeast toy for fans of the action figure line but is selling a latex unmoving Happabore in it's park is reason enough to get me worried. Strategies of keeping things so secret don't always turn up as expected as this is just like a double edged sword. On one side they can have made it worthwhile and we will have our minds blown away by Luke's roll in the movie and other things but then again, it is really going to suck to have things like Max Von Sydow's character have been kept such a secret only to finally see him 25 seconds in the movie and then see him get burnned down by Flametroopers or Maz Kanata doing almost nothing in the movie. I really hope I'm wrong and that wonderful surprises await us but I still can't shake off the feeling that the hype of the long wait without knowing anything is really going to be more of a bummer than it being something awesome. What are your thoughts on this my friends?

No magazines about the movie? EW, Empire, and a plethora of other magazines have been putting out special TFA editions. Unless you're referring to magazines created for the movie. As for the mystery box, it really just depends on the person, I guess. Personally I love it, it just makes me even more excited to go see it. But to be fair, I've pretty much read every leak and spoiler out there, so, technically I already do know what's gonna happen.

Just hold tight - two more weeks and we won't have to worry about it! I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end. And about the merchandise, I remember seeing an article a while back where someone who works in the Disney merch department said that what we've seen so far is nothing compared to everything they've got in store, and we won't be seeing most of it until after the movie comes out.

There's a bunch of new and exciting stuff out there.

I've found all kinds of fantastic TFA toys and merchandise, and this isn't even all of it-

    1-DSC00722.JPG collect-half-2.PNG.jpg

If you want a closer look at Sarco and PZ, there are figures of both-

    sarco-png.PNG Sarco-Plank_Big_2.jpg
    pz-png.PNG pz-big.PNG

In regards to a TFA Han Solo action figure, here he is-

    StarWars_Han-Solo-Final.jpg

That's the Hasbro 6" Black series figure, and there will be a 3.75" BS version as well.

Something to keep in mind, is that Hasbro has confirmed that the toys available now are the 1st wave. There will be a 2nd wave of toys/figures released after the movie opens, and word is it will be substantial. Included in that second wave will be the TFA 3.75" Black Series super-articulated figures, and more TFA Black Series Titanium ships/vehicles. There will be a 2nd wave of TFA sets coming from LEGO as well.

There is no word at this time about an action figure scale Luggabeast, but since Hasbro has done creature with rider sets in the past like the Tauntaun with Han/luke, and the Dewback with Sandtrooper, I'd say it's very possible that they will do a Luggabeast. I hope they do, because I want one.

Worry not, as there is more to come!:D

I prefer like this, Disney is doing the rigth thing. The toys and magazines will come later after the movie release anyways. It will be more intereting watching the movie and see new characters and the story that can surptises you in that special moment. Just 17 days for the release. I can wait.

Jeez, where do I even begin...
Forget the magazines (the many magazine covers, issues devoted to TFA, etc etc), there are even kids coloring books! We have action figures of PZ-4CO and Sarco Plank.

We're literally being flooded with TV clips (amounting to a few minutes' worth of essentially new trailers) on a weekly basis.

I actually look at this from another perspective, there will be so much good stuff to buy after the movie along with all of us finally discussing it rather then speculating like we have for the past year.

I think these boards will go crazy December 19 when he can freely discuss the movie. Then we can anticipate the release of the soundtrack, new action figures, etc.

    It's only just begun!

They've literally dumped like 10 TV spots on us in the span of a few weeks plus those obnoxious Disney Channel things. What's so secretive about that? The only things they're not revealing are things that are actually HUGE spoilers. Which I think is a good thing.

The term "mystery box" has nothing to do with keeping the plot of a movie "secret" prior to its release.
    *Explodes*

Otherwise, I'm not sure I understand the argument. What would another Han Solo figure actually reveal about a movie you have known Han Solo is in since 2012...?
(unless it came with a little pool of blood...)

I'm honestly worried they're keeping it so secret because they know it's going to disappoint us and it's too late to change now.

    Thanks!

Yes, that's part of my collection. As far as TFA specific toys and models go, what's in those pics is around 50% of the the total, give or take.

As for my entire SW collection, there's a bit more. Here's a photo collage of a fair portion of my overall collection-

    rb-sw-collect-BIG-33.PNG

Missing from the collage are 300 or so carded figures, most of the Bandai and Finemolds kits produced so far, and there's no pics of my functional firearm props (Mauser/DL-44, etc).

As you might have guessed, I've been collecting for a while now. :D

I do have some Micromachines, but none are in those photos. The pieces in those pics are a mixture of Revell, Hasbro, Disney Store, and Mattel Hot Wheels ships. The figures are all Hasbro 3.75", 6", and 12" figures. If there are specific pieces in those pics you are interested in, just point out which ones and I can give you details as to the brand, where I bought them, and for how much.

Also, If you're interested, I've been posting pics of my collection as well as reviews with closeup pics of most of the new TFA stuff in the Collector's Forum starting here-

At this point, they are putting out so much stuff via tv spots, special looks, and what not, that I feel that I already have seen the movie.

Actually it's not without predent. Remember 1983?

The Kenner action toy figure catalogs for this year had the pictures of the Ewoks and Jabba the Hutt "censored" by covering these up in black. IIRC toy stores had to order these blindly, because no one was supposed to see Jabba or the Ewoks until the actual film premiere in May 1983.

In comparison we have gotten a lot of previews thus far, but it looks as if Snoke is what Jabba used to be in 1983 - a character not to be revealed until the actual film.

I don't live under a rock dude but maybe you didn't get my message as well as some others. Yes there are many toys around as I myself have some of those. But it's like Deeerborne pointed out, I don't mean coloring books with just vague pictures of the characters or magazines with one or two pics of the movie. As I said originally, during TFM there were many awesome books that were completly devoted to the movies yet these left many things to the imagination without ruining the plot. Mershandise there is many but regarding picture books and story books there is none that are really good. So much secrecy only builds up the hype in some fans and it's really going to be lame to see Luke appear just for some seconds. And as you said, yes the film is only three weeks away but I can't say that TFA has given me the same feeling that TFM gave when it came out yet that's just my opinion.
