In Star Wars: Aftermath, which was created specifically to give canonical pre-text to TFA, Palpatine's advisor was asked what the Empire should do to continue Palpatine's legacy. And he said this:

“No Sith remain,” Tashu says. “And the lone Jedi that exists—the son of Anakin Skywalker —possesses an untouchable soul. At least for now. We must instead move toward the dark side. Palpatine felt that the universe beyond the edges of our maps was where his power came from. Over the many years he, with our aid, sent men and women beyond known space. They built labs and communication stations on distant moons, asteroids, out there in the wilds. We must follow them. Retreat from the galaxy. Go out beyond the veil of stars. We must seek the source of the dark side like a man looking for a wellspring of water.”

About 50 pages after, we're introduced to a group called the Acolytes of the Beyond. They are a small group dark side worshipers, obsessed with finding Sith artifacts -- namely Vader's saber. Put two and two together, and it's obvious that they must be well aware of the Empire's efforts to find the "source of the dark side". Their name affirms this. "Acolytes" means a ministry or a group of followers. And "Beyond"? Well, it would make a whole lot of sense if it's the same "beyond" that the Emporer's advisor was talking about -- "Beyond the veil of stars".

So how does this all tie together? I believe that after the fall of the Empire, the Acolytes of the Beyond were banded together with the task of finding the source of the dark side and everything assimilated with it. Since "the son of Anakin Skywalker possesses an untouchable soul.", what would be their next best option? The grandson of Anakin. They, with the help of Snoke, seduced him and made him their leader, as well as recruiting others and ultimately changing their name to the Knights of Ren.

After they successfully seduced Kylo, it was a race between them and Luke to find the source of the dark side, a.k.a the First Jedi temple. It would make sense if that is where the first Jedi were seduced and where the first Sith/the Dark Side were created. I also think that Luke is there to protect something - an artifact of some type - to keep it out of the hands of Snoke/the First Order and prevent them from becoming incredibly powerful.

Up until TFA, the Knights of Ren were trying to find the source of the Dark Side.

A place that Palpatine felt was "beyond the edges of our maps".

What were Kylo/Snoke obsessed with finding throughout the entire movie? A piece of a map that the Empire didn't have. A map that not only leads directly to Luke Skywalker, but also the very source of the Dark Side itself.

I don't think that Luke Skywalker would actively search for the dark side and protect it fro m the FO and all unless he knew all about them ...

"Plagueis" has the latin root of "plaga", which can be translated as evil, malice, pestilence, source/root/origins of malice, source/root/origins of evil, source/root/origins of pestilence

I think what OP is saying is that the dark side and the light side of the force were both born in the first jedi temple. So Luke and the KoR are basically searching for the same thing. The source of the force.

I personally believe the force is not good or evil. It is just there. I don't think there is "dark side force" and "light side force". Force users manipulate the force through their emotions and decisions. Some choose to use it for peace and meditation, while others use it to amplify their rage and gain power. The force simply utilizes the emotions/experiences of force-users to create dark/light side within them.

Interesting theory but there was no indication in TFA that the hunt for Lukes map was about nothing more than the desire to destroy the last Jedi. If finding ach-to was so vital to Snoke and Kylo they wouldn't have suggested destroying the Resistance and with it, the map.

I think that if there is indeed some dark side power that is perceived to be the source of the dark side, I think it will be more about where Snoke was residing.

However, it is curious how all this links to the Unknown regions of the Galaxy. But the source of the dark side idea to me is being nonsense.

Lastly, I wonder whether the Acolytes of the Beyond are more about being followers of the dead. They were Vader cultists and did seek to reunite his soul with his red saber etc.

    I like this theory.

The simpler answer in my mind is Snoke is what/who they found when they went searching into the beyond. Fast forward 30 years, Snoke has basically reconstructs Palpatine's master plan (or perhaps it was always his plan), and he realized that the only one that can stop him is Luke (being incorruptible, and having trained new Jedi). That seems to be motivation enough to go after him.

But I would be happy with a story that raises the stakes with Luke protecting something more significant.

I wonder if we'll find out why dark side users get yellow eyes, rotten teeth, aged skin, etc.

Starwars.com says that Jakku had a secret Imperial research base and was a jumping-off point for going into the Unknown Regions. Might this research base be one of Sheev's efforts to find the source of the dark side?

This makes Jakku all the more curious:

    1. LST was there with the map to Luke.
    2. Rey was left there.
    3. The Falcon turns up there.
    4. There was a great battle there. The last of the Empire vs the Rebellion.

This could in fact suggest something very interesting. Was Rey one of Palpatine's experiments? Was Rey to Palpatine what Anakin might have been to Plagueis? Were Rey's parents agents of Palpatine? Did LST go there because of any of this?

    Thanks for the info...

    Or Plagueis' experiment.

I could imagine Snoke secretly pulling the strings in the abduction of Luke's daughter to Jakku both to destroy him emotionally and to test if the girl has a corruptible soul.

I don't want to speculate just when LST arrived on Jakku in this case, but I imagine that he had the map when he got there. The clue the crawler claims he discovered on Jakku at some point may have been the story of this pathetic scavenger girl at Unkar's waiting for a ship that never comes.

You know, I completely overlooked that line in the crawl. Makes it sound like he did find the map on Jakku...

That's what I thought initially, but not any more. If the "first Jedi temple" means "home", as I firmly believe, I guess LST only understands what Luke's last known address means when he learns about Rey's fate on Jakku.

I personally don't see an indication that LST knows about Rey. And the start of the film is all about Poe getting the map so I think the crawl is just establishing that....

...having said that, and upon writing this, it is a coincidence that LST goes to Jakku and finds the map there and this is where Rey is, who then is the one to find Luke and become a Jedi....

I have no idea. (epic fail)

There was a strongly held belief in occultism by some senior Nazi figures during WWII - notably Himmler.
The premise of the Nazi artefact hunters that is recurrent in the Indiana Jones films has some element of historical truth, with SS expeditions having being sent to Tibet at the start of the war, where there was a belief that the Aryans had originated.

The way the First Order is portrayed: the long red banners, huge rallies of assembled troops , stiff collared uniforms - it's no coincidence :)

But do you think it is a misguided view? Or that the source of the Dark Side actually exists?
I can't get my head around there being a source of the Dark Side because the Dark Side is the bad energy created by bad emotions and passions. So for example, the root of the Dark Side power/energy is anger, hate, greed etc. This is the energy that comes from all life that creates the Force.
The only reasoning I can give to a source of the Dark Side, is that there is either:

    a) A Force user in the Unknown Regions who has massive power or a power that Sidious recognised/had a connection with. Sidious might mistake this himself for being the source of the Dark Side because he doesn't believe there to be any other powerful Sith-like being about.
    b) It's a place where (like the cave on Dagobah) the Dark Side has been pooled or imbued the environment. So it could be a place where a great evil has happened (Scourge of Malachor - whatever that was?) or where someone (Snoke) has imbued himself with the Dark Side.

So for me it's essentially either a person or place that is strong with the Dark Side. That has a strong Dark Side presence.
But the idea that it is the source of the Dark Side is weird to me and rides in the face of everything Lucas set up thus far...

No idea to be honest! but from the moment I heard about the idea of the FO looking for Vader's sabre, mask etc... and from that first glimpse of the Starkiller Base rally, I knew they had taken the Nazi thing beyond just a stylistic one.

My own pet theory is that we will finally see the Kyber Crystal being involved in some way. Lucas had been toying with idea for both trilogies, but always dropped it. So I guess that means I'm favouring the idea of a place where the Dark side is amplified (by the crystal maybe). Perhaps a battle for control of the Kyber Crystal? I have no idea lol!

What I'm pretty sure about though is that whilst TFA was following a very familiar storyline, it was in fact setting up a story and characters that will be unlike anything we have seen in previous films.

Interesting. I hadn't thought about the Kyber Crystals. That might also tie in with Luke's saber inducing the flashback in Rey - the Kyber Crystal might be imbued with the power of the Force, as you point out.

I agree with what your saying as far as it being weird for their to be a source of the dark side. I think that it probably was Snoke which sidious was sencsing, who was so powerful with the force that his presence could be felt in through the dark side if one was powerful enough. Similar to how Yoda sences Anakins anger in epsiode II after his mom dies. With out any context for the kinda disturbance in the force it could be misinterpreted by Sidious as a nexus of the dark side.

Good theory. If I'm not mistaken one of the early drafts of the script had Luke guarding some ancient Sith tomb going mad in the process. This may be some evidence to the theory you propose. Even if it was cut from the script, that doesn't mean it won't make it to the story line. As for Snoke, I recall reading some article on 4chan that was deleted, stating that Snoke is some ancient being who lives off the life force of other beings. This regenerates him and explains his mummified appearance. His master plan is to basically kill as many creatures as possible and feed off thier life force. I'm not sure I'm buying it, but it can fit in to this.
