I made this point in a thread but it's actually worth a little more discussion, IMO.

Coming from a SW background, watching OT on VHS and SE in theaters, watching the PT in high school, reading EU stuff - all the Xwing series, the Jedi Academy series, and up to the New Jedi Order with the Vong before I stopped...I can see all kinds of potential possibilities and can reason with everybody here on why this or that theory might work. Lots of far-out things could exist in this movie. But....they likely won't.

Now, coming from a different point of view, as a football fan who talks with guys in my fantasy league and on sports blogs, as a husband who has his wife's point of view and all her lady friends and the shows they watch, as a dad with young kids and understanding what kids are looking for, I get a different perspective.

The "what is marketable, what will work for everyone" perspective. Sometimes...the simplest answer is also the truest. Some things we are making more complicated and would only work for die-hards. JJ is pretty direct in honoring the past but creating something new with the same "delight/spiritual" side and KK is pretty direct about "family" (over and over again, really) and a "generational saga" that continues the story from ROTJ.

    THE POINT -

I don't know much - other than what's been said in interviews, posted on Instagram pages, or leaked stuff we've all seen and official footage.

    But I'm 90% sure

    • Han Solo dies.
    • Kylo is his killer and son.
    • Rey is the future Jedi.
    • She is the daughter of Leia and Han
    • Luke is only in the flashbacks and end of film. He will be the Yoda to train Rey next movie.
    • Snoke is Plaguies and will tie up the PT/OT/ST.
It's all pretty direct and makes sense. Everything released/leaked/interviewed has seemed to confirm these points and nothing refutes them. Some may not like the rumors/potential story...but everything seems to point to it. These are the things that will appeal to most casual moviegoers and most fans who were into EU stuff.

The hardest thing JJ is going to ask people to "reach" on is Darth Plaguies. And even then, he was mentioned in other movies, he's the emperors old master. Again, think in terms of casual fans.

You really have to push hard to disprove any of these other points..except for maybe Rey is a Skywalker vs Solo. But then that means that last week Daisy Ridley intentionally leaked a "family photo" on her IG with her and Kylo next to Han/Leia, pulled it, and did so to create a controversy. More likely...all the rumors are correct.

So get ready and embrace the story! I for one am excited and think these are great choices. We are going to have an epic movie and epic trilogy!
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 8, 2015, Original Post Date: Dec 8, 2015 ---
Too add to this - an example is "who was Rey crying over?". I watched and read on here as it was endlessly debated - It's han! No, it's chewie, look at the fur! No, it's clearly Finn, look at the jacket ridges. No, it's Han, here's a pic of me using paint to outline his jaw and chin! Look, I've lightened the pic...it's Luke!

    Seriously?

C'mon guys! We're going crazy over all kinds of ways to disprove the spoiler rumors because we don't like them. (or some don't. Some of us are already on board)

When all along, it's Finn. He gets injured. Rey steps in. Because she's Rey Solo. And she's going to fight her brother who just offed their dad.

We know it's true, we just want it to be something else.

    Time to embrace the ride.

I agree with your entire post other than this part. I believe she's Luke's if only for marketing and money making reasons. Disney can easily hype up "Who's the mom?" with books, an anthology movies, a series, etc. and make more money that way versus "Han and Leia had two kids."

After the new Rey leak I'm also looking forward to the movie even more now. I can officially hype myself up since I'm done with finals and you bet I'm going to.

I think you make a lot of good points. But I wanted to quote the last thing you said simply to point out that the endless speculation, and sometimes the CRAZY speculation, is how some people enjoy the ride. I've found myself bowing out of a lot of it... just too deep for me. But I've had to learn that although the back and forth may seem frustrating sometimes, for a lot of people it's actually a lot of fun. I am not one of those people, though. haha.

Embrace the ride, indeed. Ride ends in a week and a half. :)

Great post! I'm all for it too, as I said - I was big into EU and know there's all kinds of fun things that could happen.

I think my bigger point - to clarify it a bit - is that certain things seem all but confirmed from the spoilers/rumors and what I'm observing is people arguing, fighting even, against reason and creating these very elaborate backstories and possibilities for some lesser theory...because they don't like certain story choices.

That's what gets me cracking up. (the thread is created in humor and to celebrate the future trilogy) It's when people have to go WAY out of their way on some very obscure nerdish thing (and I'm a nerd!) that Disney/JJ is simply not going to put in a mainstream movie. One they have been very clear the last week in the interviews is much more "space fantasy" than outright "science fiction". It's for everybody...not just the convention/comics crowd. (who they have honored very well)

Lastly...I guess I would say...the ride is only truly beginning in a week and a half! Because then we'll have this new series, with established characters and direction forward. Great days!

    • Han Solo dies. Yes!
    • Kylo is his killer and son. Yes indeed!
    • Rey is the future Jedi. 3 Force sensitive : Rey, Finn and Kylo... Now who will end up a Jedi, we'll have to wait next episodes.
    • She is the daughter of Leia and Han. No, Luke's
    • Luke is only in the flashbacks and end of film. He will be the Yoda to train Rey next movie. Not Yoda, more Obi Wan... But you are right.
    • Snoke is Plaguies and will tie up the PT/OT/ST. Yes and he's no longer a Sith lord... Nor Jedi....

I agree with you MarsPhoenix. Also I believe the shooting schedules are acccurate. All the speculative blanks they try to fill in missing dialogue and action only believe as much as they correspond to the trailer footage.

I agree with all the points except Plaguies being Snoke...JJ Abrams has been pretty open about not being a fan of the prequels in interviews, and from what I understand while he isn't going to contradict them directly, he's just going to pretend like they didn't happen in the sequels (no mention of midochlorians, for example).

If every one of your 90% assumptions proves accurate, that will be fine with me (provided the movie is good), but I admit I'm hoping at least one of those points will not only be wrong, but very wrong. For reasons I can't really explain, I'm hoping JJ and Co. managed to keep something completely under their hats.

I did leave room that she could be Luke's daughter in my post under that...but it's still more likely Solo.

Does anybody have a reason besides "Solo is too obvious!" that it can't be Rey Solo? Truly curious here. Why, based on clips, interviews, other things do people think Rey is a Skywalker?

Obi-wan/Yoda, same diff. But I agree. Luke is the new mentor to Rey's character.

The Plaguies thing is all but confirmed. Head over to that thread. Disney is asking for the pulling of Snoke images off Collider videos that look like DP.

No worries mate! Caught everybody off guard!

Oh and I forgot to mention.

Here are some other things fresh from my crystal skull:

    - Rey doesn't reach for Luke (to start her training)... she reaches for Luke to bring him BACK and everyone believes (including Leia) that Rey (Luke's daughter) is the one that will convince him to come back to his friends and the resistance. Will Rey become a Jedi and train with Luke... the contrary would be really surprising... but not implied nor seen in Episode 7.

    - There is something special about the blue saber since it "connects" strongly with a Jedi. Snoke knows Luke is alive and while he is, he protects or "shields" Leia and Rey's presences.

    - Phasma, somehow, will find out where Rey is heading at the end of the movie.

    - I will speculate here, but I think there is more than meets the eyes with Darth Plagueis, how he created life and how he is connected to the Skywalker lineage... and how all of that became a threat to Palpatine/Sidious and where all of that is heading to... I strongly think that Snoke/Plagueis/whoever is an enemy to Palpatine and the Sith... and also the Jedi Order.

    - What is retrieved by Poe at the beginning of the movie does not contain information about Luke's location but important specs on Starkiller... and is an artifact formerly worn by Rey's mother. Maz Kanata has the legacy saber.

    - Like I said before, two brand new types of characters in The Force Awakens: Scavengers and Swordsmiths :)

    8 days!
