So, for everyone that has seen 'The Force Awakens', we know that a New Republic was indeed formed after 'Return of the Jedi', and that the Resistance was like a specialized military branch of it created to deal with threats like the First Order.
The First Order was rose up from the ashes of the old Empire, led by the mysterious but powerful Supreme Leader Snoke. They're the equivalent of the remnants of the Nazi party banding together after the fall of Berlin.
Now, after the events of 'The Force Awakens', I am personally left with questions.
The First Order used the Starkiller to obliterate four or five different worlds across the galaxy, one of which I have to assume is the capital world of the New Republic.
Which, if you go by logic, one would assume that means Coruscant, the capital of the Old Republic and the Empire.
So... did the First Order just wipe out Coruscant??
And does anyone else get the sense of a giant middle finger to the Prequel Trilogy if that is indeed the case?
Is the New Republic now, simply, gone? Are the Resistance now all by themselves?
And what of the First Order? Starkiller Base, an entire planet under their control, an essential asset to them, was destroyed also. How does this affect them? How much power and resource do they have?
    Everyone's thoughts are welcome.

My thoughts are that the First Order is very well equipped militarily. They suffered a massively loss, but are still very dangerous.

New Republic apparently has a fleet. I think Admiral Ackbar mentioned that. I don't know if we're led to believe part of it was destroyed with the planets or not, but I'd imagine whatever remains will be absorbed into the Resistance, leading them to grow in strength by leaps and bounds. Perhaps capable of going to toe to toe with the First Order.

I see the conflict from here on out as more of a civil war than rebels vs Empire deal. You'd have to think that worlds sympathetic to the First Order are going to go all in now that central government is gone, but the Resistance should get a huge boost from Republic worlds and whatever military/fleet is left.

Was Coruscant one of the worlds destroyed?
The one we see up close seemed very metropolitan and similar to Coruscant.

Watching the film for a second time, it appeared that one planet and four moons were destroyed. At least one target appeared to be the home of diplomatic leaders of the Republic. We know very little about the Republic at this time, but I suspect we will find that they were a lot stronger we were lead to believe. Both sides have suffered a major loss by the end of the film.

I do not believe the planet destroyed was Coruscant. It is too well-known a planet not to be outright named were that the case.

I was reading a little bit more about this and it seems the entire Hosnian system was destroyed, even though it might've looked like a planet and moons. Just placed closer together for viewing convenience. It was also mentioned in Hux's speech that the New Republic fleet was housed there and was presumably destroyed. Although I can't imagine every single ship being right there at that moment.

Strangely enough I find the fate of the New Republic fleet to be more important than some of the planets just because the First Order has a fleet of Star Destroyers and the Resistance did not seem to have any major capital ships, just T-70 X-Wings. This would make it pretty easy for the First Order to just swoop in and gain control of all major planets and shipping lanes.
