You can chalck that part up to Chewie not being an expert at protocol droids so he did what he could before have the professionals fix him for real .

It's only really started to bother me now due to the unneccessary nature of it (and universe shrinking I guess) and even then it only bothers me to a tiny degree. It does make for a fun mini story, aloof snobby C3PO was created from scraps and junk on a desert planet, whereas rude and feisty R2D2 was in service in the regal Naboo Palace :D

My question is, was it intended fan service from George Lucas or something else like forcing the OT and PT together?
    --- Double Post Merged, Jun 8, 2016, Original Post Date: Jun 8, 2016 ---
It looks like Chewie does not care to inform his old buddy.
Let's be honest, George Lucas just screwed up simple as that, he is only a human, we humans like to screw up.
I guess he hoped that nobody will recognize all the contradicitons.
To be honest I have the feeling that he was not aware about the mistakes or did not care.
I guess he did not watched the OT before he went on filming the PT.
It's funny in a weird way.

Or an explanation could have been that they were all instructed to keep things under wraps.

I can see Chewie not revealing the fact that Yoda escaped, but there's absolutely no reason why he would need to keep secret the fact that he knows the force is real and that he had seen Jedi in action.

Maybe because if Han was a kid on Kashyyk like some old tumors that I've heard, his parents probably might have raised him to not even know about the force and Chewie decided not to say anything out of respect or whatever about anyone from the PT...idk just throwing thing there

It's just one nonsensical aspect in a sea of prequel nonsense that the apologists try to explain away, like most of the prequel crap that they desperately try to defend, while at the same time, bash TFA. We cannot possibly accept Rey landing a few blows getting the better of Kylo Ren, but we can accept a small slave boy with no technical education whatsoever building complex, finely-tuned jet-propelled vehicles and droids. Never mind that such a thing would take years of training in advanced engineering and mechanics and require the mental capacity of an adult. No problems with plausibility there. OK. Whatever.

I wouldn't call it "Defending' but more about being creative to fill in the blanks ourselves like a Mad Libs book...:p remember---aliens could withstand the G-forces of Podracing and humans didn't have the capabilities but using the force in whatever natural expertise helped him have reflexes enough to literally NOT DIE as it had nothing to do with winning although Qui-Gon Jinn bet on him...but I believe the literal canon explanation is that Anakin built Threepio based on some blueprints he found in Watto's Junk Shop, which is why there a re many like him

There's connections that make sense, and there are connections that don't make sense. Tarkin knowing Anakin during the Clone Wars? Makes sense, Tarkin was a military guy who was involved in the fighting of the Clone Wars, he was also one of Palpatine's favorites, and it helps explain why Tarkin is so casual with Vader in ANH. Was there any line or interaction in the OT that could be explained or given new significance by Anakin building C-3PO? Not that I can remember, especially since 3PO's memory got wiped at the end of RotS anyways.

10 year old Anakin building C3PO from scratch is one of the silliest things on Star Wars, but remember that in the first Tattoine sequence is stated that the same young "Anakin is the chosen one, destined to release the slaves" (WHAT???? HOW THAT TURNS OUT?????)

But i really don't mind the PT very much simply because what doesn't make any sense in the OT has became so outrageoues beyond idiotic in the PT.

My main concern on the Star Wars story continuity and plot holes remains the relation between Luke and Leia in the OT, in ANH Leia and Luke are a thing, a big thing, the young princess and the poor farm boy, but in ESB Leia and Luke change affections in Hoth but when Leia and Han escape to Bespin they became a couple and Luke turns out to be Leia's brother??? INCEST in Star Wars? Actually the Internet explanation that the Leia and Han trip to Bespin took waaay tooo much time and they get together while Luke is being trained in Dagobah, but what about the incest?

I don't really agree that there is a "plausibility problem" of Anakin building C3PO.

Regarding the hardware, Watto is not super-evil, so maybe he simply CHOSE to given Anakin some spare parts even though he had no obligation to do so. Plus we know Watto is a gambler, so maybe Anakin won some components by predicting a chance cube. :)

Regarding the software, I believe the assertion that Anakin couldn't program something as complicated as C3PO is basically just a way of saying "Kids are stupid," which is an untrue stereotype. Although I don't think any human being can currently program something as advanced as C3PO, there are kids who write software that is advanced as software produced by adults.

Besides plausibility, there is a separate question though - even if it's plausible, it could still be a bad idea. Some people feel like it makes the universe too small or makes it sort of strange that people such as Owen Lars don't seem to recognize C3PO later. This is really more of an opinion question, though, so either you can accept it or you can't. I don't expect SW to be super-realistic, and I can accept it, but I can understand why some people would dislike it.

How is it silly?, the idea of C3PO being built by a child was in beginning since the 70's. Can I see your authentic Star Wars fan ID? You need to relax and be like Qui Gon.

Lucas often has not be truthful about how planned ahead the films were or that his current views were always his views. For example, he claims that Greedo firing was just clearing up a misconception and that it was always meant to be like that. Despite the fact that the shooting script contradicts him (and this includes the shooting script pages that Peter Mayhew posted on the internet a few months back).
Two, even if that was the plan from the beginning, that doesn't stop it from being silly.
Three, never say the sentence, "Can I see your authentic Star Wars fan ID?" It makes you look like a jerk. You don't see me saying that when someone likes the prequels.

My apologies when I said that, I meant do you even bother to learn about the franchise, and that we should all be calm like Qui Gon. That being said shooting scripts aren't always a indication, regardless Greedo shooting first, and Han defending himself, references the Jedi philosophy. Again I apologize if you took it the wrong way.

Maybe this was the "brains" that he found from his scavenging efforts. Maybe the "brains" came from a part in the shop that belonged to another protocol droid and that was what he had to work with. Throughout the books and comics we see characters scavenging droid parts to make other droid parts.

Even if it was a protocol "brain" he could be instructed to do household duties!

It's doubtful that the Protocol Droids were a sought after thing in Watto's shop. And do we not see young Anakin working on droids in Watto's shop?

Where did you get this notion? What's your source? Lucas doesn't mention it in any interviews or writings i have read or could find. He mentions it in none of the commentary tracks on the home video releases to my recollection. Nor does anyone else at LFL that I'm aware of. This idea stands in direct contradiction to the animated "droids" series from the 1980s starring 3po and r2 which took place years before anakin would have been born. George signed off on that.

Hey. Last time i checked han solo was never a jedi and thought their philosophy was hokey mumbo-jumbo at the time of a new hope. Why would it make sense to have his actions "reference the jedi philosophy?"

Your snarky comments to other users about "genuine fan cards" and "do you even bother to learn about the franchise" ring as pretty unfriendly and hypocritical when you assert facts that don't seem to exist and allude to character motivations that make no sense.

Meh, we can explain it away as some silly 'boy creating friend' thing....which is creepy because if I built Threepio with that attitude, I would have melted him down for scrap within a day.

But the story point is....well....useless. He's not going to help his mother - is he really a butler droid or a translator or a protocol droid? Unsure. Doesn't seem like he's needed to clean the apartment (which is the nicest slave quarters ever, BTW - that I have more a problem with, he's got his own room, walk in kitchen, and everything). He's just useless story-wise in TPM.

If he befriended Jar-Jar and became the only accessible protocol droid that spoke Gungan, then maybe he would have had a true contribution to the story.

I am seeing a lot of the points about TFA. I think Jar Jar/JJ Abrams (I'm sorry for my jokes) might have gone a little too far in creating a strong female character when it comes to Rey. What really bothers me is how she even knew about the Jedi mind trick. I could understand it if we knew that she knew about it and she tried several more times than she did to use it, but what ended up happening was a bit of a stretch.

Yes, my account is named after Rey, but I can still criticize her.
    (emperor) This is the best.

The title of this thread alone made me laugh so hard hahahaha....

Anyway, I really don't want to sound like a severe PT hater or something and get a bunch of people mad but things like this were the worst part of the PT. Forget the stale acting. Forget the awkward look of most of the "sets" aka heavy CG. Forget Jar Jar lol. The over connection of EVERYTHING was really want irked me about the PT. There was almost no bounds to what tiny minute little thing in the PT could be connected to the OT. Threepio being one of the bigger and obviously more important pieces in that he is also a character too not just an object. Threepio is a droid in which other models just like him were created just like Artoo and just like BB-8. Why the hell did he need to be built by Anakin Skywalker????? It's absolutely ludicrous that they couldn't come up with a better more reasonable less ridiculous way of introducing the character. Look at Artoo's intro. It's perfect. I don't understand how they can come up with something nice and reasonable and subtle for him and threepio has this ridiculous scenario. I don't even care about the argument for if a boy would be able to actually build him. It's just taking things too far in terms of how the droids and other things are connected from the PT to the OT.

That being said, yes it's sci-fi. Yes it's all just for fun and Star Wars is supposed to be just that but sometimes you cant help but think "are you kidding me???". It's things like this that make me want to choke some of these people saying "Disney is going to make the universe small". They cant possibly make it any smaller that it has already been portrayed by the PT so I think we are good.
