    I didn't put that together.
I went hunting for it because I noticed it. No idea who made this - it came from a google search that bounced through some closed fb group and I jiggered with the html to get the image nicely out, then I saw this pop up later on a sw facebook group I'm on...so it's making its way around from somewhere.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Though none of these are from Rise of Skywalker, this is what the Rey/BB8/twin sunset thing mentioned earlier in this thread made me think of.

For years, we had these visual bookends to Luke's hero's journey:

    main-qimg-63f6fca5cf4cbfd0e6b01d0ea50ab0e5.jpg

    jedi_burns.jpg

And then, decades later, we got THESE visual bookends, one from the last moments of Luke's youth, the other from the last moments of Luke's life:

    star-wars.jpg

    fjXwXNn_d.jpg

That the end of ROS mirrored this (Rey's first moments as a Skywalker?) Was just beautiful.

Sir, I have to give you very big kudos for being one of the few whom I have seen spot the chiastic relationship between ANH and ROTJ with Luke's journey and the funeral pyre and his aunt and uncle. It's always right there in our face, but few notice Luke's entire family (sans sister) are burned in the OT.

    Nicely done!

And I agree on the rest - the book ending of TROS with Rey was just wonderful.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Thanks, man! Aced a term paper many, many years ago for a course on themes of mythology in literature by examining those themes in the OT (or, as it was back then, simply the Star Wars Trilogy!) and I closed it with the bookending of Luke's journey with those two images. Dr. Waller (long since one with the Force, I'm sure) absolutely loved it, aced my paper even though I was late getting it in, and attached an article to it on the same topic by her daughter.

So, that particular chiastic relationship in SW has always meant a lot to me. And when I saw TLJ for the first time, I got very choked up when I saw that they were using the twin suns (even though, or perhaps especially, since it was an optical illusion on a single sunset) to mark the end of Luke's life when the binary sunset on Tatooine had essentially marked the "beginning" of Luke's life in ANH. (And I didn't really like TLJ - yet - the first time I saw it, but despite that I choked up there and at Luke and Leia's final "meeting" as well.)

    That's outstanding.
If by some rare chance you still happen to have that paper, I'd love to read it!

Brother, I'd love to read it too! It's been over 30 years since I wrote it. (I'm gonna say fall semester of 1987.)

There is a slim chance that it's still somewhere at my Mom's place with whatever is left of my old college stuff. Next time I'm back for a visit I'll try to remember to look for it.

I have worn out, absolutely WORN OUT my "Great Post" button on this thread!!!

Hey @FN-3263827 or anyone on the staff, I need a new "Great Post" button please!

This is amazing, touching, incredible stuff!

P.S. @Jayson or anyone else on here.....were these visual poetic images planned by JJ/RJ and/or the developers? Or are they coincidence? Has anyone interviewed JJ or RJ and asked about this?

Based on Abrams' (or possibly Terrio) comments about the "razor wire" balancing act of responding to all prior 8 films, it's clear they were very purposeful.

Terrio talked a bit about it.

"So we actually started with just a whiteboard. At Bad Robot, there are these big rooms with just white dry erase boards. They literally just surround you everywhere. It’s very dramatic. The wall opens and the boards come out. So we started just with that. Literally, just writing and asking, “What do we want to see happen? These characters, where do we want to see them go? What are the feelings that we want to have? What are the stories that we want to tell? What things do we feel were unresolved either from VII or from VIII or even from Episodes I, II, III, IV, V, VI?” We kind of started with that and then, gradually, that dry erase board became a document that we just called “The Boards.” It was just a Word document that had all these ideas, which eventually grew to be, like, 121 pages of things that we would like to see."
    https://www.polygon.com/star-wars/2...-ending-chris-terrio-interview-skywalker-saga

This film really wore Abrams out. He's exhausted, according to both his editor and co-writer.

Which is how Star Wars should be. ROTJ sent Lucas to the hospital, and every prior film taxed Lucas very much.

These are very hard films to make because of all this chiastic balancing to do while also getting your own story to work right within it.

Abrams had it quite a bit harder because this isn't his original style, he has to do all of the above as well as wrap up the trilogy, and then also wrap up the entire saga - and then there's the whole bit of writing around recovered footage of Fisher on top of it...not to mention cross checking that each idea is OK to do in the SW universe for this film according to "LFL Law".

These men deserve a writing oscar for just pulling anything off with this level of complexity and so many competing and moving parts.
I thought TLJ was complex, but this just takes the cake as probably the most complex film I've ever heard of being made.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

It could not be any clearer that the notion that: "the Sequel Trilogy doesn't have a coherent and cohesive story because there wasn't some pre-planned overall arc-line that every director and writer/co,-writer were obligated to follow"... is a fallacy.

The TROS scene with force-ghost Luke sitting to the right of Rey and speaking about confronting Sidious parallels the ROTJ scene with force-ghost Kenobi sitting to the right of Luke while speaking about confronting Vader. In both scenes the force-ghost doesn't just appear, but walks into view. Luke wears black in the ROTJ scene while Rey wears white in the TROS scene. Both scenes take place in a locale of exile.

^This scene is also paralleled in the TROS scene in which Rey is burning Kylo's TIE after his overcoming of the dark side. The love of both protagonists being the impetus of the redemption. We see her standing before the fire (burning of the past) in the same way - again (obvious but noteable) she is in white while Luke is in black.

The shot through the cockpit window of Ochi's ship looking down on Rey reminds me of the shot in TPM looking out the Naboo cruiser's cockpit at Qui-Gon fighting Darth Maul.

    Really great thread. It rhymes.

Yestarday it was my 3rd viewing. And I think it's amazing the amount of characters, events and situations from all the Saga that have been connected. With an image, a phrase, a dialog, a character, a ship, a planet, a touch. And for me, this ST, thanks to TROS, it seems more an unique global experience. Of course sometimes the story is rushed but when I think in the difficult task, I am really very happy with the final results.

Tie Rey parent's ship and Jakku, Snoke/Luke deaths, Solo's touching, Palpatine plans since episode I (Order 66, First Order, Final Order), the Death Star, Luke's faults in TLJ, the xwing under water, Jedi books, Leia's training (and Carrie's passing), R2 not in the mission to stay with princess's end, Tatooine and the suns, Rebellion/Resistance, Maz, Chewie...and a big big etc. Full of details that tie with everyting. I think we must say they have worked hard to give us proper connections.

We all here have dissectioned the films in a thousand parts and it's easy to find minor inconsistencies. But I must say, with the difficult task to tie 9 films, full of surprises, dead characters and plot twists, that TROS has tied all together in a very satisfactory way. Maybe the general public doesn't think too much in this and see a solid whole story as well.

For more than 30 years, most of us had in mind a way or another to follow the events of ROTJ. But it's not that bad if they surprised us with other stories (fgs, there were a hundred possibilities). In fact, this could be a good sign if they surprised us (beside disappointing character development and old reunions).

And sure there is a lot of visual poetry that will come with home releasing.

As Shakespeare said: All's well that ends well. And the end on Tatooine is perfect.

@Madmartigan : I'm with you, of course... but I still HUGELY miss the first Skywalker. Not even a glimpse. Nothing about that "choosen one" thing. Sad.
