You may not be familiar with the Wilhelm Scream by name but its sound is unavoidable. Maybe you missed it somehow in past movies so ill include a video below. If you never noticed it before, you will surely never miss it again after reading this.
The History of the Wilhelm scream goes like this, 1951 Gary Cooper a movie called the Charge At the Feather River was produced featuring at some point a man getting an arrow to the knee(anybody? no? OK, moving on). The Star Wars Sound editor Ben Burt adopted it as his personal signature in all Star Wars films and Indiana Jones. I think its fair to say that we will hear the Wilhelm Scream in TFA as a nod to Ben Burt. Why do i bring it up? because its part of Star Wars History!

What do you think of the signature sound effect?

Have you ever noticed it before?

I heard it in Star Wars The Force Unleashed. ;)
I thought it was clever and used properly. It might be in Part II also but Id need to check.
The sound FX and production values used the video games was top notch.
I think Darth Vader was either James Earl Jones or the actor who did the funny webseries Chad Vader. (dark)

To me, the Wilhelm scream has been an integral part of the Star Wars soundscape from the very beginning. Yeah, we hear it everywhere now, but back in the day it was really only used by Ben Burtt. I think the first time I ever heard it referred to as a "Wilhelm" was in an issue of Bantha Tracks in the early '80s, and it was misspelled "Willhelm".

One thing that rarely gets pointed out is, there are actually two Wilhelm scream variants. The classic one is what we hear as the stormtrooper is shot off of the chasm ledge in ANH, shortly before Luke and Leia do their big dramatic rope swing to safety. We hear that version of the Wilhelm in damned near everything these days, much like that hawk screech sound effect that appears in just about every Western ever made.

Then there's a "secondary" Wilhelm, which I am convinced was recorded by the same actor, and which I assume may be part of the same original Wilhelm recording.

It's in ESB, let out by a Rebel soldier who is standing next to a turret that gets blown up during the walker attack. It's closer to an "Ohhh!" sound than the classic "Aaa-AAAAhhh!!" version of the scream.

For an easier comparison, look at the truck chase in Raiders. The Nazi soldier who goes flying out the back of the truck and lands on the windshield of the jeep behind it lets out the classic "stormtrooper off the ledge" Wilhelm. Not long after that. a second Nazi gives the other version of the Wilhelm as he goes flying off the side of the truck.
