Watching the SW movies back to back came up in a conversation I was having on here, and I was reminded of something I'd kind of forgotten about...

I remember going to see ROTJ on its initial theatrical release.
But I am also convinced that some time fairly soon after this - bear in mind I'm in the UK - I went to a back to back screening of ROTJ alongside at least one other Star Wars movie.

Now, I was anly seven years old when ROTJ came out, so my recollection is a little fuzzy... I am *pretty* sure what I saw was ANH plus ROTJ, but it *may have been* all three movies and *may also have been* just TESB plus ROTJ, but that's not how I remember it.
I am also fairly sure this was something advertised in the national press and on TV, so I don't think this was just some kind of one-off event being run by my local theatre. I seem to remember it being quite a big deal at the time.

Does anyone else remember these screenings?

I can't seem to find any record of them (although, to be honest, I have only done a quick Google search so far).

You know, as soon as I posted this I knew I'd stumble across the answer shortly afterwards... D'Oh

    triplebilllarge.jpg

I guess this was what I was struggling to recall - this was 1984, and now I see that poster it kind of comes flooding back.

It would still be interesting to hear if anyone else went to these screenings though... :)

Star Wars was re-released in the summer of '78 and '79 and the trailer for ESB was in front of SW in the summer of '79. I only managed to see it 33 times those summers

I went to a double-bill of ANH and Empire in '82 that included a sneak preview of "Revenge of the Jedi" - I suspect this was the first time I noticed the Episode IV mention too. Good times.

I saw Empire in the theater first (I almost went with my mother who was seeing Airplane! in the next theater, because I was 3 years old and stupid) then Star Wars in '81 or '82.

Wow, all 3 movies back to back to back? There's no way my parents would've sat through that.

The OT in original theatrical release (specifically ANH) are not nearly as good (comparatively speaking) as the latest iteration as they were honestly lacking in some background substance as well as possessed flaws that diehard SW fans will immediately point out when they see them.

Most people that are screaming for them to be re-released have never seen them, and when they do, they'll be like; "That's what everyone's screaming about??" and it'll be anti-climactic. I saw all of them in theaters when originally released, and would love the re-release just to own them (don't get me wrong), but I'll personally stick with the latest.

    Hah - wow, couldn't disagree more. :)
I more routinely choose to watch the bonus disc GOUT versions from the 2006 DVD releases, despite owning the Blu-Rays, precisely because of all the stuff that has been added to these movies over the years...

I remember the re-release in the summer of 1978. It played in my town at the drive in. Saw it once with my parents, then saw it three more times with two of my fellow miscreant 9 year old friends.

We had old Army fatigues we'd bought at this old-time Army surplus store that we used for playing war, and one of the guys had some OD green face paint, so we decided to don our camo and low-crawl all stealthy like into the drive-in from the woods. Other people were sneaking into the place the easy way in car trunks and in big beer coolers. We figured that was just wrong. If you were gonna sneak in, you'd better at least work for it!

The sound was broadcast on the radio, so we took this little transistor radio with us. This picture wasn't the greatest, the sound was crackly, we got eaten alive by bugs, and on our fourth try we ended up being run off by the theater owner carrying a huge flashlight and swinging a crowbar.

But hey, in the pre home video days, it was Star Wars, and we had a great time!

Oh I get exactly where you're coming from, make no mistake! :) It's like an option on a new car...some like electric windows, and others like the old fashioned crank! It's kind of the same comparison to those that hate the prequels vs those that don't mind them....to a degree. :)

Ahhh, those days. I was 10 yo when ANH hit theaters. My friends and I could talk about nothing else...for years. Good times! :)

Jedi was definitely re-released on its own in March 1985.

With the headline today ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Tops $900 Million Internationally it has become only the fifth title to hit the $900 Intl. million mark so I decided to see how my beloved Star Wars held up. Although it's considered separate movies as far as box office, for shits and giggles I decided to see what the original and Special Edition versions brought in combined because technically it's the 'same movie'

Total Box Office: $1,355,044,022 which would make it the 5th highest grossing movie of all time.
Total International BO: $433,048,008 which would place it at #45 for Overseas (not including Domestic)
