    okay, just a theory.

luke skywalker, battle of endor. looked good at the end of the movie RotJ, but wasn't. so, by defeating the emporer, luke caused a bad situation in the galaxy, in the sense of, political upheavel which broguht all kind of smaller terror conflicts and such. sure the empire was oppressive, but there was stability. so, in the eyes of the galaxy, luke skywalker is not a bad guy, but he's not really a hero yet until he can, make things right.

so, luke knows that he has to establish the jedi first. he looks over han and leia's kids. says "too much vader in ben, i think, let's be patient. rey is our choice this time. she is very caring, with no thought of anything but love in her heart. but ben, much fear in him?" han and leia nod in agreement.

but, okay, things are getting worse. first order is looming. leia, desparate for some reason, to get the jedi started, urges luke to teach ben. luke is against it, but leia pleades with him "there is good in him, you can teach him, luke. luke we need this right now. we can't wait for rey it's just not a luxury we have" "i'm asking you to trust me, leia; ben just, not ready". han is probably like "maybe we should just listen to luke. he is the jedi here"

things worsen and luke finally agrees to teach ben. ben is angry and luke tries but cannot reach the boy. ben turns on luke and destroys his jedi academy. ben leaves with snoke to join the f.o. and rule the galaxy.

luke returns to han and leia with the terrible news. shockingly, leia - in her grief - begins to blame luke. han tries to intercede "hey, leia..." "no. if you would've taken ben when i told you, this wouldn't have happened." luke only looks on. "you. you are the one who said he was too old." "leia..." "no, luke. just. i just don't even want to look at you" luke eyes grow misty. "leia.. i must take rey with me..." leia laughs bitterly "oh no you are not taking my little girl from me." han says "luke, come on buddy..." "han it's the only way" leia "i will NEVER give my daughter over to you do you hear me?" "leai if we don't do this" "just get out. you've done enough" "leia, please" GET OUT! luke, heartbroken, turns and leaves. han "leia..." "just. leave me alone."

basically a scene where leia says with bite "hey, bro, thanks for ruining my life. oh, and the life of the republic. oh, and the life of the jedi. because it's your fault ben turned. you are the worst teacher in the history of the jedi, and the worst savior in the history of the galaxy, and we would really all just be so much better off if you would just take your failure of a teaching arse as far away as possible. trust me, no one wants to see your face anywhere at all. except for snoke. and, hey, you know what- good luck with that snoke. that's what i have to say to you "brother"" ... not with those exact words but the spirit of them, that just cuts luke to the core. so luke heads off, and leaves behind a map just in case anyone in the future might need him. he's just going away to dwell in his sister's angry, grief-driven words, not burning bridges.

meanwhile. back in the crumbling republic, han and family narrowly dodge an assassination attempt that "tragically claimed the life of their daughter". han says to leia "i can't lose my girl. we have to hide her like ben did with luke." "but where?" "ah, i still have my connections in the 'scoundrel' circle. i can still pull a lot of strings out there." at this point leia is heartbroken about the things she said to luke. often she closes her eyes and says "luke.... can you hear me?" silence "i'm so sorry. please come back to me"

so leia says "i have to go back to help fight, the need me, i'm the general" han says "i can't go, i'm staying here. don't worry i will always be right in range and watching. she'll be fine" "she'll be lonely" little rey walks in and sits in leia's lap. leia holds back tears. "when ben coming back?" leia "soon i hope" "will i be there?""i sure hope so""i can't wait to see ben" "me too" "will he be glad to see me?" "i'm sure he will. you know he loves you more than anything in the galaxy" rey nods and smiles. "mommy loves you too""and i, love, you" they hug. han says "well don't anyone let dad in on any of this" family hug.

so, there's luke. out there for years. dwelling on "bugger off, you miserable teacher, i'll never let you teach my other kid". he sees a ship show up one day. out comes a girl. luke has spent the day bearing the burden of all the pain and suffering in recent times, the loss of his buddy han. up come rey holding out the lightsaber. "teach me"

so luke's expression is one of, oh, is leia seriously sending you to me to learn after the hell she wrongfully laid on me after ben? the, utter, NERVE of that woman. so now luke's like, okay, here we go again. let's all blame luke for everything, tell him, get lost; then later, "oh so sorry about all of that lol could you go ahead and teach the one we said we'd never let you teach but turns out you were pretty much right and we should've listened to you. because now we see." and luke is like, not only this, but leia sends the kid to me to do the asking.

and THAT is why leia stood there waving as rey went to find her brother who she was "desparately looking for" because leia's like "uh, not sure i want to really face luke again after all what i did, and i do realize that this is kind-of, cheating. but, i'm just going to send my sweet little girl all by herself; because luke could never say no to his little angel."

so episode 8 should pick up with luke, eyeing rey intently, and saying "un-freaking real. i can't believe you leia. you've got to be kidding me." but he'll quickly forgive it all and go "okay, we got work to do now rey, this is some heavy stuff i'm about to tell you; i mean, you don't even know who you are for a reason, and that reason is that your brother is kylo ren" "no way!" "yes, your brother is kylo ren" "oh that's so rad!" "uh, not exactly the response i was looking for rey..."

that is the theory. like it, hate it; what's the alternatives?

Well, I don't think your idea is bad, but I am sure that the First order was born after Luke left. The opening scroll said that.
