There are a lot of examples of Expanded Universe elements becoming canon. Coroscant, was named by Zahn in "Heir to the Empire". Dathomir first appeared in "the Courtship of Princess Leia". And I'm sure, many more.

One story that has many connecting elements is "Shadows of the Empire"
Enough that I think Lucas film might consider it canon.

There are Swoop bikes in Mos Eisley in the SE. (Swoops were invented for SotE)
Also, Dash Rendar's ship the Outrider is seen there.
The Black Sun crime orginazation is featured in the Clone Wars along with a very Xizor-looking leader. (verifies that at least the species is canon)
In RotJ it seems that Vader has been busy and the Emporor finally gives him permission to openly hunt for Luke.(if I remember correctly, Vader was plotting in secret to find Luke during SotE.
The whole thing was concieved as a giant multimedia project with full backing from Lucasfilm, in fact it was all their idea. It came out a year or so before the special editions. The gap between Empire and Jedi had previously been off limits to authors.

Anyway these are just the reasons off the top of my head. But I'm wondering with these "endorsments" in the canon, does Lucasfilm consider it canon? What do you think? Would it be cool to see a Dash Rendar spinoff film? Or Prince Xizor in Star Wars: Rebels?

I posted in another thread that I would like to see elements from SOTE make it into the ST or at least into some of the spinoffs since it was one of my favorite EU reads.

I've also noted I'd like to see a Dash Rendar movie in another thread. Shadows would be an obvious choice.

Of all the Legends material, this is the one that should be Canonized Post-Haste. It was always Lucas' intention that this be canon. (I'm only pretty sure I'm not spit-balling on that last part). It has a Sound Track for gosh sakes!.
