SPECULATION Thermal Exhaust Port

I hope not, not everything has to be connected.

 

I hope something like this happens in the movie.
If Galen Erso did intentionally put that exhaust port into the DS, then it would finally explain the 'broken' plot point everybody makes fun of. Perhaps he knows it's the wrong thing to have such a weapon, therefore he installed this weak spot on purpose.

Forget that! Who was it that put a GARGANTUAN hole in the second Death Star that this time a whole ship could fit in???!!!

 

Never thought of it but I like it

 

Let's do some maths:

- Revenge of the Sith takes place 19 years before A New Hope;
- Rogue One will take place something like months (if not days) before ANH;
- In the first trailer, Mon Mothma says Jyn lived alone since the age of 15 (this is strange, 'cause in the last trailer, the little Jyn seems younger than 15);
- So, if in the present day Jyn is around 30 (as Felicity Jones is), this means that it has been 15 years since Krennic took her father, so...
- ... this leads to an important discovery (yeah!): Galen Erso has been kidnapped by the Empire something like 4 years after the events of ROTS, when the Death Star was partially built (as we know from ROTS ending).

This doesn't mean very much, but at this point I don't think Galen Erso is the builder of the ENTIRE station. To me, he is just the builder of the cannon (the last piece, as we see in the trailers), so he cannot have had that much of control to insert the exhaust port as an intentional inherent vice.

But I can be wrong...

 

I thought I remembered reading somewhere (either one of the new canon books or someone's fan theory, can't honestly remember which), that the Geonosian designed Death Star had serious flaws and blew up on its own, which led to the Geonosians all being wiped out by the Empire.
Then Galen is brought in to fix the design and make it work.

 

Was he the architect for only the weapons systems or for the entire round design? I don't think he installed it because the physical plans for the death star have been around since AOTC if not longer. If at all, he maybe designed the weapons systems to not be able to defend the exhaust port.

According to AOTC AOTC, the geonosians did design the death star because they refer to it as "our weapon" or something like that when talking to Dooku during the first battle with the clones...if the star blew up on its own, then it would have still been being built well into the OT since it was the first time building it..

 

You make the assumption that Jyn has been living on her own since her father was taken away by Krennic at c.9y.o.a, but she could easily have been brought up by someone else from 9 to 15. Like, say... Saw Gerrera? Or some Imperial Academy Outreach program? A monastery of Force Faith nuns? ... or whatever.

 

Or she was a part of the empire which is how she can sneak around so easily when they're undercover?

 

This is my opinion: even if Galen Erso was the builder of the cannon only, he could have been taken for a much more specific reason: Krennic knew him.

Actually, I think Krennic and Galen were friends, before the Empire. So if Galen is such a brilliant scientist, as the actor himself said, this makes sense. Let's take a huge scientist, who was my friend, and put him in the project of the cannon, the last piece of the Death Star...

 

Maybe the exhaust port was for the super laser

 

From what I read about their relationship, Krennic saved Galen's life which is why he helps Krennic.
