I mistakenly posted this in the Ep. VIII area, sorry mods.

With the unprecedented amount of hype leading up to TFAs release, I think us, the fans, have a responsibility to evaluate this film honestly and without any hype-induced denial creeping into our psyche. Carry on.

    Well.... I was there.

And I really wanted to love TPM. I convinced myself at the time it was almost better than ROTJ.
But I felt forced to see it a second time.... and was kind of fed up on the third viewing.

This time.... I sincerely think it's the best Episode I have seen.... and can't wait...CAN'T to see it again.
The feeling I have this time is not the same I had back in 1999.

I understand that the hype blinds you.
You tend to ignore some elements.... I was hyped by Avatar and Jurassic Park in 93... now, I think they are great movies but not masterpieces.

Actually, the way I feel about TFA is about the same I felt for Avatar... but.... to be completely honest, it was the 3D experience that was new to me.

So, even with the hype cloud.... TFA is not TPM....

I was there too, I mean: the premiere in Brazil back in 99 and the movie was too diferent if you compares it to the CT. The second time I liked most but it was still weird. And today after all these 15 years I can tell you that at least TPM its an entertaining movie with some good characters and great action scenes. I cannot say the same about AOTC and ROTS, these two are really horribles.

Did everyone go to TPM drunk? Only the guy at the end made sense.

i remember the electricity at the midnight premiere of TPM. everyone in costume, lightsabers, people jazzed up. the deafening roar at the opening credits.

then it ended. no cheering, just some nervous tittering.

and yes, we tried to like it. tried to find positive things to say about it. and some people still defend it. but i knew it was a bad movie then and so did the friends i went with.

TFA was a completely different experience. it was, for me, literally like watching Star Wars for the first time as a kid.

with presales, people don't stand in line anymore. feels like a thing of the past. i got to the theatre 45 minutes early to see TFA and was shocked to find it empty. then about 30 seconds before the previews started to roll it filled up completely.

Well I think that video is great at showing just how misleading a short "interview" can be because I think there were some good things about the movie, like the special effects, and that's what people mention the most, among the specific things mentioned. Some of the interviews don't last longer than 3 seconds I think, so you don't get a fully formed opinion. I somehow think not everyone liked it that much.. like the stormtrooper cosplay guy (I think) was like "Uhh I'd give it a definite thumbs up" with that big "Uhhh" hesitation at the beginning, it hints that there were also some concerns with the movie from him.

It's also easy to miss or misconstrue "10 loved it" "7 liked it or thought it was OK" "2 hated it". It's Star Wars fans, they should almost all "love it" if it were actually good. So by the numbers it's close to 50-50 "Love" vs. "Other" but the interviews paint a different story, in my opinion.

I too remember the excitement. Applause when "Lucasfilm" showed on the screen, applause for the 20th Century Fox fanfare and then of course when the crawl began. The movie goers reaction was bigger than I thought it would be.

I liked TPM at first, thought it was pretty good, but was also a bit disappointed, mainly because of Jar Jar I'm guessing because it's hard to remember what other things might have bothered me. On second viewing I liked it less.

TFA was one of the most fun and exciting movies I've ever seen. And it's held up quite well with repeat viewings.
