This was a quality movie. In fact, I loved it. I loved watching it on opening night with clapping and cheering fans. There are many questions and complaints by fans it would appear. As a stand alone movie, instead of a complete trilogy, ESB would not have been as great. It had to have the board set in ANH, and then come to a close in ROTJ. This movie will be the same. It was a blast. The most frequent gripe I see is that it ripped off the original star wars story. I have to just laugh at that. It had to fulfill elements of Star Wars to FEEL Star Warsy again. Which is what all of us wanted, for it to feel like Star Wars again. Not just be a murder mystery setup in the Star Wars Universe, it had to set a similar board to ANH, BUT, this was just the setup, and the story can go ANYWHERE now. Literally. I am stoked to see where the story takes us in 2017 and where it ends up in 2019. This movie will look DRASTICALLY better once those 2 movies come out. I enjoyed the heck out of this one, however. I feel the music could've have been more powerful and better, but it did a good job, even though I am accustomed to great jobs in SW with music.

I LOVE IT! Many people here will too.. And many of you will hate it or it will have fallen short of the expectations you have made for 30 years with EU books and etc. I feel like many more will like this movie in 2017 and many more still in 2019. I am thrilled with it and I am seeing it the next 2 days. Hoping 3D is just as fun.

Friendly reminder that The Empire Strikes Back was commonly seen as an inferior sequel by critics for years after its release.

That's the problem with this movie its an ad for Episode 8 and possibility 9. It's not a good movie standalone.

On the contrary this movie is going through the 'phantom menace phenomenon' right now.

Once this initial hype falls away it will be exposed for the flawed, ill paced, lack of creativity which it is.

Not until the last 5 minutes, really. I admit that they could have handled that better if they'd at least have featured Luke in some other way.

Finally a staff member with some sense. It's as if the rest have been paid off by Disney.

You hated it, I am fine with it, it's an opinion.
I loved it, also an opinion.
No one is paid by Disney and everyone should express his opinion.

What I have problem with is starting 10 new threads to bash on the movie.
IMHO: reviews/opinions threads should be merged into one so we can amorce constructive discussion on plot elements from the movie as usual.

I think it probably will, as it will 'fix' (hopefully) my major problem with the film. That it sets up a lot of story threads that it didn't resolve, once Episode VIII comes out that won't be such a big deal (especially if Episode VIII does a good job with them).

I really liked it. But I got the feeling leaving the movie similar to how I imagine someone felt leaving LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring when they had not already read the book like I had. Like I had just seen the beginning of a bigger story, and was excited to learn how it ends.

Actually, what you're trying to do is put everyone who posts negative opinions on the film into one thread you probably wouldn't visit, and hope that "legitimate" discussion of the film doesn't actually include valid reasons as to why some parts of the film just don't work at all.

What I would love to know is where will VIII pick up? Immediately where VII ended or will it pick up months or years later.

I think picking up right at the end of VII makes the most sense as perhaps we can at least see some kind of funeral or memorial for Han as he deserves and we can see what comes of Rey meeting Luke

A good comparison, but it does not apply. Lord of the Rings was not an established film franchise before it premiered, unlike Star Wars (I'll get back to this in a moment). The Force Awakens is not a prequel, it is a sequel (or so it claims to be), the continuation of a story that we last saw was 30+ years ago featuring the heroes of our past who have since grown up, and a new generation that will finish what they started (no pun intended).

Why does this matter when comparing it to The Lord of the Rings? Simple. Most people walking into that movie probably didn't know the story beyond a simple synopsis (I had never heard of it, my father had read it as a kid, but didn't remember much about it). They had not seen Middle Earth before, nor had they come to love the characters we met on that journey. But the film was long, and full of many amazing moments, and what made the Lord of the Rings so magnificent was the adventurous and emotional journey that seemed to never fail to amaze. So, the ending of Fellowship of the Ring did leave you wanting more, but it didn't come off as an attempt to expand a story into more parts than it needs to (unlike The Hobbit trilogy). You felt satisfied, it didn't feel like a cash grab (even though all films are cash grabs).

Now, if we turn our attention back to Star Wars, we already know who Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, R2D2 & C3P0 are, we already love them, and the ways they interact with each other. Bringing them all back after 30+ years, but not letting them have a brief interaction (besides Han & Leia) is not how you do it. The only reason it was done this way was to let Han Solo have his film for his final adventure (Harrison Ford has never been happier in interviews about a film), and make sure people will show up for the next film. If this film failed, then Disney could easily do an autopsy and fix the problems for the next film. That's how cheap the ending of TFA feels.

I'm still bipolar about the film though... suddenly I love it, suddenly I hate it. The objective and subjective parts of me are at war over this film.

Probably a few months after (maybe a year), so that Kylo can be recovered and fully trained, and an overconfident untrained Rey can go to her almost demise.

I loved the movie. And I think a lot of you (of course, not everyone) are disapointed because of not only high expectations, but specific expectations.

What really counts to me is that I feel just like what I felt when I saw ROTJ for the first time. I was excited, pumped and, for different reasons, fullfiled. Not because of answers, but because of what I saw which is the return of the movie universe I really love.

^^^^^ What Voodoochild and Luke's Beard said ^^^^. I can't say I ever left a prequel wanting to see it again. It was like 'I've done my duty as a fan' and that was that. I would imagine I will go see this movie 4 or 5 times in the theater.

But this is not just a sequel film. It's a sequel trilogy and this film is the first film of that trilogy. Thus it has more roles to play. It has to set up the next two. It has to reacquaint people with the characters (old), introduce the new characters, and set up the story.

People don't have to like the film, that's everyones prerogative. But personally, I think people need to relax. It's a film. It's supposed to be enjoyable and it is, at the end of the day, entertainment. 3 1/2 years ago NO one thought there'd be another film, much less 5 more. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Voodoo and Beard hit it right on the head - it is awesome.

I feel too many people out there were expecting Empire Strikes Back levels of good and because they didn't get it they are hating the movie more than they normally would.
