I'm going to go ahead and say it, don't mind if I get banned. I wouldn't swap a 1000 of you for 1 Magnar.

<snip> Mod: No ban necessary, but let's keep to addressing the post and not the poster. Thanks.

There are a lot of issues with this film. Some you can easily overlook and some you can’t, BUT to me the biggest issue by far was the way the character of Luke Skywalker was used and how he was killed off for no reason. Wouldn’t you being looking forward to Episode 9 if Luke (and Han for that matter) was alive and well? There is no way anyone could convince me that a SW film is better off w/out Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.

Luke Skywalker is the face of Star Wars for the vast majority of fans. Characters like Rey, Poe, Finn etc, are simply not as iconic as Luke Skywalker or Han Solo and both were shown absolutely no respect in these new films. It’s pathetic that Han and Luke were used to set up characters that are insignificant compared to those iconic characters...And by iconic I don’t just mean to the Star Wars universe, I mean to film in general. Both are named by the AFI as one of the 100 greatest characters ever created and you kill them off for future sequels with comparative lightweights like Poe and Rey?

Thing is, they aren't just comparative lightweights, are they? They are just lightweights. Not that I blame the concepts of the characters or the actors. Rather the horrendous story-telling that's relegated them, Rey especially, to being a thin cardboard cut-out.

Anyway, saw this online and thought it quite funny. It's short (6 minutes) and delves into the screenplay pitch meeting for TLJ at Disney HQ:

PERFECT! This is probably exactly how the actual pitch meeting went.

Yeah, I thought so too. A number of good lines there. I think I especially savoured the line about Rey's hero journey "with all the middle parts cut out". LOL.

To be fair, that's a bit of a click-bait headline, though. I mean, Ridley is basically saying she wished the script had screentime between herself and Finn (probably also because Boyega is another English person) and she relied on having him around when they both did TFA to get through it.

That said, she is right that it would have been nice to have some screentime between them both. It's a relationship that was built up in TFA and then was consigned, like so much else in this movie, to the scrapheap.

Yes I agree. I liked these two characters at the end of TFA, although Rey was a little super powered for some unknown reason.......

But this entire film is the cinema universe equivalent of click bait.

*sigh* even China had stuff to say about Finn.
I see LucasFilm taking this as a sign to remove him completely from the franchise.

If that happens, don't count on me sticking with Lucasfilm. I have no respect for a production company that is going to rely upon the desires and prejudices of one country.

Yeah, I saw that a couple of days ago. Raney does a good job of honing in on the key areas of plot/character/setting where TLJ falls flat on its face.

There's another follow-up, and a longer one, where he has a really interesting explanation for why the ST just feels wrong. Basically, TFA in rebooting ANH starts from the wrong place. The logical place to start would have been similar to where TPM started because the story arc as presented is good -> bad -> good. So, the story should start from a place of good and go to bad over the course of the trilogy. Rather than trying to put a buck down each way and getting nowhere.

I thought it was a thoughtful and interesting way of seeing a larger issue for these stories. Timestamped to relevant bit:

JJ introduced a pretty interesting element that just sort of gets abandoned rather quickly: The First Order is basically a rebellion.

The Rebel Alliance, fancying themselves the rightful heirs to the Old Republic, sought to overthrow the Empire and build a New (better) Republic.

The First Order, fancying themselves the rightful heirs to the Old Empire, seek to overthrow the New Republic and build a New (better) Empire.

I wish that was more the focus of this three part story - the conflict between these two powers: the former Rebels against these new Rebels. What does THAT look like? The FO wants to take over and then . . . does. It just happens and now we’re right back to where we started, like someone pushed the reset button.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at by them putting a bob down each way. And then, they used basically a remake of ANH to tell that story which is a weird place to start because the setting of the story seems to contradict the starting premise of the story (it's like mixing up the beginning and middle of the story).

Worse, it looks like they are going to compress everything (by that I mean a victory, partial or otherwise, of the rebellion in episode IX) into these 3 films. In essence, truncating what originally took 6 movies to tell (and even that was difficult, IMO) into 3 movies. I think that one explanation for why everything feels so light and shallow and unearned in these films.
