I get the reasoning behind it. When Star Wars was running on all cylinders, it was the story of these ragtag underdogs against this tyrannical army of oppression. So, they wanted to bring it back around to that. But, you’re right, that’s an incongruent place to start given the resolution of the previous trilogy.

The status quo was a state of peace under the New Republic, but that was inconvenient to their objective, so they just eliminated it. Man, they could have told such a different and compelling story that we hadn’t already seen in this universe before. Meh, so be it.

100% valid criticisms of TLJ. TFA had flaws, but I can forgive as it was a GREAT movie. TLJ I can't forgive.

This guys take on the flaws is spot on.

It's not that unique to dislike an installment. I know people who love Revenge of the Sith, consider it one of the best of the franchise. I consider it trash, possibly the most hastily made, sloppiest production I've ever seen. Even the lighting is subpar on that film.

So what? There's 9 films here folks, if you include Rogue One. 9. What other franchise can you point to that has 9 movies and not find one in the series you don't like?

Is there really anything so sacrilegious in The Last Jedi that you have to pretend it portends doom for the franchise entire? That because your opinion isn't congruent with the majority, that some of you are now inspired to tell everyone the franchise is ruined?

What happens to Luke? Pretty much the same as what happened to OB1 and Yoda, he dies a martyr on his own terms.

What happens to Rey? We learn she isn't royalty, like Anakin was a complete nobody, a son of a house slave. Luke spent his mornings working the daily rounds of a moisture vaporator farm. He collected dew and moisture out of the desert to sell as water in exchange for droids and milk and food to grow vegetables.

What happens to Kylo? He stops being a teenager, takes full control of his situation and largely wins the film. Even if he allowed Rey to escape, over his blind hate for Luke and Wookie that wounded him, he knows how to seduce her. He knows all her secrets and shows in this film he can exploit them for his gain.

What happens to the Resistance crew? Each see the rebellion turn to dust, but then preserved at the last moment due to the martyrdom of Holdo and Luke and now, suddenly, believe they can win, even though they are the smallest in number than ever before. In other words, they gain hope.

The acting is superb, the lighting and mood on Ach-To are some of the finest in any installment, the kids love the jokes and we get the best sequence with a bomber we'll ever see in Star Wars history. We get Luke given a conclusion that's just and right and yet allows Mark Hamill to remain in the franchise as a ghostly paternal figure who whispers about destiny. He becomes the OB1 now of the new installments. How perfect.

You don't have to like it. Trust me, I remember feeling weird and isolated when I realized to my horror that I despised Rogue One. That it's just such a mess at the start, it can't forgive a really cool Vader scene they tacked at the end because the real original ending was a dud. It's sloppy work and unworthy in my book, but hey guess what most Star Wars fans love it and Kevin Smith continues to gush about it, so hey no two Star Wars fans are ever alike.

And that's a good thing. Diversity is a good thing, even if the diversity is how one judges the quality of these things.

You didn't like the latest Star Wars? It happens to all of us. It happens to Star Trek fans, Batman fans, heck even Harper Lee fans had to endure a sketchy, awful should have never seen the light of day "sequel" to To Kill a Mockingbird recently.

It's okay to hate the film, but don't hate the game. The game is to put Star Wars on the screen and make money, so that we can make more Star Wars movies.

The Last Jedi was a hit and ensures that future is intact.

The doomsday scenario some of you are painting in your "council" videos are laughable. Star Wars is winning, despite the fact you personally thought there were "flaws" in the script that "you could have made better" and "now I'm worried because Crait wasn't recognized enough as being familiar in the film." As if these concerns even register when toys and ticket sales made everyone's profit lines nice and tidy.

The Last Jedi won. It won this thread. It's success speaks for itself. And Star Wars is thriving. Don't listen to nerds on youtube insisting it isn't with no actual date or information other than what their gut tells them. In other words, let's remember these are the same nerds who loved Justice League, until they realized everyone they didn't and now pretend it's an awful film too.

I've seen the brand at death's door in 1985...and I've got a Star Wars film coming out every year and Star Wars toys on every shelf and I'm supposed to be worried about the future of the brand?

I love the Star Wars community, but some of you, seriously, your prophecy skills are weak and your hate has made you vulnerable. :)

I love you anyway, because like me, you love Star Wars.

I think it's right for many of us to worry about this franchise's future, particularly because of the Last Jedi's reception. This is not the same as the prequel trilogy that was panned for its bad direction and acting. This movie is being criticised in many different ways and oftentimes in areas that divide the fandom we've never seen before.

One of the ways I fear TLJ has divided fandom is through politics. Granted, I'm not saying all folks with progressive or conservative values have a monolith agreement with this movie. But it's interesting to see their respective media especially the extremes take a stance for and against it. You can make the argument and possibly even the creators will say that they had no political agenda, but both sides of the extremes think they did. The number of articles and videos that try to address the politics show this divide.

Star Wars is very special to me, and I hope it does not become a divisive franchise in this manner. With the current political climate in the United States, I hope that instead, it can remain true to its franchise's classic hero's journey with universal ideas that can be embraced by anyone of any different philosophy, politics or faith.

I don't think I have seen many people complain about anything related to politics in this movie, what progressive or conservative values is this movie supposed to promote?

Kylo has killed off every male figure that could have given him guidance. Luke respected male authority. Kylo doesn't. We've heard Kylo speak negatively of everyman except Snoke in this trilogy so far. Kylo acts more like someone who wasn't raised by both parents. He seems to carry some strong resentment for men.

As Obi-Wan would say, "I'm not brave enough for politics." But I will say to the creators that they be cognizant of their biases and prevent overly hamfisted messages especially in regards to politics. There are many beliefs and ideas here particularly in regards to diversity that I believe in myself, but it needs to be handled with better care and not veer into divisive agendas.

I just got home from my 15th viewing, and this movie just does not age well. It gets worse every time I spend $10 bucks on it.

My 2-year old laughs his ASS off every time Leia Poppins appears. He turns to me (every time) and says "Papa, this scene is contrived and the pacing is off..... It's way off, Papa. The pacing that is."

Then he goes back to laughing his tiny ASS off!!!

The only time he's not busting a gut, is when the movie 'tries' to be funny. Then he just sits there in stoic silence. To be fair, he's always been a little sh1t, but I can't take this kid anywhere near another SW movie.

He already has told me of his concerns of the 'pacing' of SOLO, (he's 2 years old, mind you) and I gently reminded him that it hasn't come out yet. Not even a trailer. All the little guy could muster was, "but the pacing."

You can still sell kids right?

    /sarcasm (except about kids)

That's one aspect of the negative feedback I have little time for, to be honest.

Basically, the criticism coming from the alt-right that the movie is - for example - some sort of plot against men and the victory of the SJWs. I dislike the movie because I think it a bad story, badly told, that is not able to tell itself seriously and craps all over Luke Skywalker.

So, yeah, my eyeballs roll when I read that the movie is a victory of the SJWs etc. Maybe, because I'm not American I'm not clued in sufficiently to the current culture wars or whatever is going on there or maybe I just don't care. There's enough awfully wrong with this turd of a film without indulging in politics.

(As an aside, I read the same criticisms of Star Trek: Discovery. Now, I'm a Star Trek fanboy - even more so than a Star Wars fanboy - and I do not like Discovery at all. It's not Star Trek. It's just joyless bad sci-fi action something. But, criticism that STD is bad because of diversity running amok is one of the most stupid criticisms you can make about Star Trek. Diversity and inclusion and humans working together and with aliens was, and is, a core part of Roddenberry's vision and a core part of what makes Star Trek, Star Trek. So, that criticism is just ignorance and should be discounted.)

But, if your point is that the movie may have been co-opted as part of the American culture wars, that would be regrettable and unfortunate.

Our society has changed from the OT to what it is now. George Lucas came up during the patriarch society. The respect that is shown towards men reflects that. America has become more of a matriarch society of late, and Kylo reflects that.

It's unfortunate. I have many criticisms that have nothing to do with politics as well, but it's hard to deny that the political extremes have latched onto this movie. Many could argue that the TFA had a bit of that as well, but not TLJ's extent.

I have to disagree with you here. I don't ascribe malevolent propagandic intent (by Disney) to this movie, when incompetence is a far more likely explanation.

Come to that, going back to Lucas, Leia is a feminist icon. In fact, she is much more of a real female heroine than Rey is or likely to be. In all three of the OT she kicks ass in various way - and yes, I know, gold bikini. but that whole section does end with her choking out the intergalactic crime lord with his own chains.

It's just where we are as a society. When looking at Kylo. He showed resentment towards the men. Even outright hatred. He disrespected Lor San Tekka about how old he was. He felt Han wasn't a good father. He felt betrayed by Luke, and Snoke showed no respect towards Kylo. I think it's clear he had a grudge towards the men. When it comes to women he gives them choices he doesn't give the men. Kylo ask Rey twice to join him. Once in TFA when he spoke to her about being her teacher, and the other in TLJ. He hesitated to take out his mother's ship, and so far he hasn't had anything negative to say towards her. That fits a lot of momma's boys today.
