I can't speak for @Lock_S_Foils but I certainly loved this film as an addition to the saga.

One thing that must be said about TLJ being a good addition to the saga:

It is topical to the present, just as the OT and PT were. OT was a topical post-Vietnam reminder of empire vs. native rule. The PT was a topical warning about the rush to war and use of violence. The ST is about the repetition of the failures of prior generations, which is a logical outgrowth of both the PT and the OT, as well as a reference to WWII.

I just got back from seeing TLJ for the third time. I have to say, as much as I loved the movie the first two times, I enjoyed it even more the third time! I really got to appreciate the acting, the writing, and the overall experience even more this time. I will admit, at least to me, the movie has a few minor flaws, but just like TFA, the movie overall is thoroughly enjoyable.

Luke was awesome in this film. Honestly, he should have won and Oscar for his portrayal.

    Loved Yoda

The throne room scene was fantastic.

    Who could forget the finale

Last Tuesday was also my third viewing. Also I tried, I couldn’t find anything that made it less good for me, still a 8 out of 10. The more often I watch it, the more I enjoy the quite scenes and some background moments.

This time I noticed that Yoda seems to hit Luke on the nose with his stick when lecturing him. Did my eyes betray me or was this force ghost able to interact physically? Maybe even force ghosts are able to learn new powers…

I go with @Old Biff from the Future, although I had no problem with the final ;-)

Your eyes didn't deceive you, he did hit Luke. And, yes, the Force ghosts can learn new tricks - in From A Certain Point of View, Qui-Gon learns to manifest himself though he wasn't able before.

Apart from Casino Bight and a few nit picks, I still loved the movie!

Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver, and Carrie Fisher (RIP), still knock it out of the park.

I've come to appreciate the rebel storyline slightly more, especially the beginning (after second viewing), and I think they handled Poe's character well.

Snook is too evil to deserve backstory, maybe someday we will get a PST trilogy to flesh him out! Like we got to give the emperor backstory.

Maybe some day it will be possible to cook waffles with the force. And Rey will be the first "waffle master".

    I'll see myself out.

I've known Luke Skywalker since 1977 and he wasn't off or weird even a bit in my estimation. You can't over humanize Luke because what made him great was his humanity not his parentage, his non-existent zen monkness, his mastery of the force, his skill with a lightsaber, or any midiclorian count but his core humanity which turns out to be human and consequently flawed like we all are.

I don't get this concept of being beyond temptation, even Christ was tempted. The test is overcoming temptation not being magically above it.

I think in the end Luke did surpass his master but he did not and should not be expected to surpass his humanity because there is no such thing but more importantly because to do so would strip from Luke what is most essential to his character.

I can put on my Star Wars/1977 lens, my Empire Strikes Back/1980 lens, as well as my Return of the Jedi/1983 lens and still cannot see this beyond Christ like deity you seemed to have latched on to.

Never turn? I totally can buy that.

Never tempted, never to doubt? Those are wholly unreasonable to the point of being absurd expectations of any person even a fictional one. I can't think of even a fictional or religious exception. Not only that but the concept robs Luke Skywalker of his personhood and makes him a two dimensional object removed from humanity. That is truly not my Luke or even anyone named Luke ever or even Jesus, Buddah, or Mohammad much less Steve, Lilly, Antoine, Leonard, Sally, Estaban, or Jane.

There is no such lens presented in any of this films no matter what year other than in some folk's minds but I have little idea from whence the concept would come except maybe Angels but they have no agency and were never humans.

I will repeat this point as much as I have to: an author's intent is not the final authority. Good creators (like, I would argue, Lucas) often say more than they intended. I'm fine with the argument that Luke in TLJ doesn't match Luke from the OT, even though I disagree. But there's no real purpose in arguing that TLJ Luke goes against Lucas's vision. We need continuity within the films we have actually been given, not with the avowed intent of one creator.

i want to both rate this wise and give it a like.

Luke decries the fact that others think of him as a Legend. it's an impossible burden.
and even then he manages to be what they need in the end, which is astonishing and beautiful and compromises nothing of who he is/was.

Poor Luke, he judges himself as harshly or more so than the folks in our galaxy that are fit to be tied for his little moment of doubt even though he has the insight to know he can't be this beyond legendary figure but still holds himself to such a bar.

You're right though, once he forgives himself, reconnects to the force, and puts it all in perspective of another lesson from his old master he finds a way to rise to the occasion once again setting a hell of a bar for Rey to surpass but it costs him his corporeal form.

One cannot be what Luke and too many of his fans expect and be flesh and blood. Crude matter struggles to channel so much power and cannot consistently live up to being such a vessel.

Same difference. Ground level. It was mid summer or so for me.
The line was still around the building of the little four plex I first saw Star Wars. We didn't leave, I had to watch it again right then and there and have been hooked ever since.

Luke Skywalker is a tremendous soul for a movie character but I don't even get where this beyond even the thought of temptation school of thought came from.

That really is the perfect being the enemy of the beyond extraordinarily good and beyond Marty Stu status. What kind of story can be told of such a god or more so a creature/machine without self determination and bound frozen in amber forever, there is no room for choices. There can only be stagnation.

Luke's moment with Yoda is so fantastic. Yoda's line at the end about students "growing beyond" their masters is fantastic. You picture Yoda, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Luke, and now Rey. I wonder if this is the last time will see Yoda in this saga. If so, it's a fitting tribute to the old Jedi master.

    True that.

I saw a tweet phrase Luke's dilemma as the difference between tempted to murder and attempted to murder.

The difference is huge - particularly for Jedi!

    Nope.gif
It's also what's refreshing about having an anti-villain like Kylo Ren in SW.

I like how he shared his struggle with temptation and self-doubt with his uncle.
The directors gave us a story where we see Luke throw in the towel and come back to retire at the top of his game.

It's sad that some people get so hung up on the beginning they can't acknowledge the end.

Anyone else think that Luke's death was much more satisfying and iconic than Han's death? The music, visuals, overall tone, etc. just felt so much more satisfying than Han's death. Han's death arguably means more to the overall story, but it doesn't resonate outside of that. It just happens and feels hollow even though you know it's supposed to mean something.

I mean, I get why people have issues with Luke's death, but I'd agree.

Luke's death was more peaceful, a willful embrace with death during a victory. Han was stabbed by his son, and had to watch him cement his path on the dark side.
