thanks @The Last Deadeye for making this thread. after a second viewing today i feel like i've managed to shove my heart back into my chest. it still aches, but i'm clear-headed enough to say i absolutely do love this movie even though i didn't get what i wanted on so many levels (and did get what i wanted on so many others).

Thanks FN, yeah it tore at my heart, but I never once doubted after leaving the theater that I loved the movie. Can't wait to see it again like 10 times.

I think it is hard for anybody to disagree that Hamill just killed it in this movie (no pun intended). Luke was incredible.

Luke passing on to... whatever it is that he passed on to. No Rey Skywalker. It was a let down, but not on a personal level. I feel that what happened to Luke was executed brilliantly. I cannot think of another way for him to go that would have been as good. He all but ascended to Jedi godhood and passed into the Force.

Luke's levitation on the rock at the end was pretty awesome. What a gut punch to watch Luke die. You spend your whole life with a character, so that their death feels so real.

Or watching Leia in those last moments. Or the throwback to the ANH hologram...

    It hurt.

I'm disappointed that so many people are missing the point of the movie. It was definitely a great movie. It was very different for sure, but I think it is better than The Force Awakens, and would place it fourth behind the original trilogy.
So many people are disliking it for the wrong reasons, I know everyone can have their opinion, but some rant kinda makes me lose my faith in cinema lol. I can't believe we are in a time where formulaic superhero movies are praised as masterpieces, but when an artfully made, bold, and emotional movie comes out no one understands it.

TLJ was loudly bashed as a "safe rehash". LOL, I guess fans gotta be more specific when saying that they want something new because we got new and turns out a bunch of folks don't really like that as much as they thought that they would. Some are already hoping that JJ takes it back to "safe".

Either way, I don't fault folks for not liking it but I do fault folks for the unhinged hyperbole. That is ridiculous.

When fans say they want different, they usually mean style and not content. They want new ships and lightsaber colors. They don't want the Force to be made more universal, more detached from bloodline.

While I'm excited about bloodline being critiqued (good difference), I am not happy with the different Luke Skywalker we got. That's an example of lazy difference.

It's kinda as if fans were never satisfied no matter what. Something is too familiar so they hate. Something is too different and they hate. I know the movie wasn't what most people were expecting. It did totally destroy my expectations too. And when I first saw it I felt kinda confused. But in the end I don't think it's a bad thing that the movie is so different.
I've noticed fans in general tend to believe they own the movie so they can demand whatever they want from the creators. I know some people will say that as a consumer you can demand whatever you want to buy. And after all movies are a product. But I see it differently, I think the artist is the only one who can make the art the way they envision, and the consumer can like it or dislike it. Or say they don't understand it, but never demand that the artist shape their product to what the fan wants. After all, there are thousands and thousands of artists, if you don't like it you can just move along and find someone who does something like you envision. Or even better, you can create art yourself.

I don't think that the message was that the Force is more universal. The message was the Jedi don't own it, that it is part of every living thing. The Jedi and Sith used it as a weapon, the Republic used it martially and the Sith used it destructively. To me it says that when the Jedi do rise again, it will be as Guardians and stewards, not as a governmental special police and arbitrators.

Definitely. The Jedi were undone by their own arrogance and hubris, as Luke notes. I love the idea that the Jedi will, in the end, become more guardian-like, less involved with politics and not tied in with the Senate (assuming that they go in this direction, which it seems they are). In Jedi Luke hit the nail on the head when he stood down and refused to fight. "I will not fight you father..." knowing his father, in the end, would not be able to countenance his sons destruction.

This film has given me so much to contemplate that I can't even think straight. And I'm up with the chickens thinking about it. LOL

Watched TLJ last night and I was blown away. Before talking about the content, the actual execution of the film was fantastic. The script, cinematography, acting and score were superb. The only exception was Daisy Ridley's performance which I thought was lacking emotion at certain points, especially in the first two thirds of the film but she was still good.

As for the content there were a lot of surprises (obviously) but not one of them that I was disappointed with. I thought the evolution and characterisation was natural and unforced and it made sense.

One of the only real criticisms I can make of the film is some of the humour (IMO) came at the wrong time. There were some tense/emotional moments that were waylaid by humour which I thought disrupted the tone in parts.

As a film on its own it gets 8.5 out of 10 for me. However after 9 is released and all the mystery is revealed I expect that score to increase. I think this trilogy is gointo be so intrinsically linked it will be hard to judge each film individually until the series is completed.

Honestly, I was somewhat disappointed with the force awakens. Abrams fluttered around certain ideas without getting too deep in to them... Johnson just seemed to tackle everything head on. There was just more meat to it, more world and character building this time, we actually have an idea of the state of the galaxy now. The entire throne room scene has gone down as one of my favourite scenes of the entire saga. The yoda scene was brilliant.

It will be interesting to see where Episode 9 goes. At the moment I envisage kylo ren cooped up in Vader’s mustafar castle with his knights of ren around him. We will see. Not convinced that’s the end of “snoke” maybe snoke as a person but perhaps Snoke is actually a force “entity” and snokes body was just a host. Andy Serkis even said “snoke is THE dark side of the force”..

I was blown away. I got from TLJ what I desperately wanted from TFA (though I get why that film played it safe).

It continued the story in an original way without dismantling the canon or ruining the important concepts of how the Force works.

Every character had a role within the complex philosophical and mythological messages that were being told.

The concept of the Jedi wasn’t overridden but expanded - the scene with Yoda putting everything into context and making the old Jedi master, my favourite character, as wonderful and inspiring as ever.

The scene with Rey, Ren, Snoke and the guards is in my top 3 along side the Yoda scenes on dagobah and Vader’s redemption.

The Luke vs Kylo scene is the most beautiful scene I’ve seen committed to celluloid.

And I have never been so pumped in a SW movie as I have in this one, to the point I was letting out squeals of delight! The Rey/Ren fight. The Falcon on crait with OT music. Luke vs Ren. I haven’t reacted like that since Yoda flipped out his saber vs dooku and sidious - and this time it was amplified a hundred fold!

I literally cannot fault this film. Even the bits I “didn’t like”, I loved for being so daring and fresh. I embraced everything.

I’ve fallen in love with SW afresh.

Hahaha! Could be that Ren will see his uncle much more often as he would like to.
I saw it in German. Don't now Lukes original words yet. But he promised his nephew that "he and han will always be with him" and sthg like "see you another time... ".
I had a big smile on my face.
Ren did not look that happy :D
Also before when Hux asked Ren if he thinks he did not hit Luke enough already with all thes Laser fire :D
