Just read an interview in UK mag, TV & Satellite Week with Anthony Daniels and it's hinted that he's signed on for EpVIII... sounds like we get to see Goldenrod in at least two more films then :)

To be quite honest, it'd feel weird if they "killed" him off. I can see the OT characters dying, and that makes sense. But the droids being dismantled/destroyed/what-have-you just feels weird.

On a side-note, wasn't there some theory that the whole Star Wars saga as we know it (EPI to IX I suppose) is just a retelling of the events from the droids? I've sometimes pondered how that works out. I mean, they weren't *always* around, but they were more often than you'd think, in the background.

The c3po and r2 will definitely be in every episode. For starters there's really no way of killing them off, since they can be rebuilt. The droids getting damaged is more of an inconvenience than a tragedy. But more importantly Lucas always insisted that they be in every episode. It's more than just a theory that the story is told from the point of view from the droids. It's something that Lucas has gone out and said multiple times. In a story with filled with larger than life heros and villains, the droids represent us, the everyman, so to speak. R2 is our desire to help as best we can, and c3po shows how most of us would actually react (we mean well, but we certainly wouldn't be all that eager to stick our necks out like r2). The story is told from their point of view because their point of view and our point of view are one and the same. That and at least one of them is usually there for just about any scene, especially in the OT.

George Lucas originally wrote the script was to focus on the droids because they are the least important to the main story. Its how a lot of Japanese films were made back in the day. revisions were made and he decided to focus on the Trio. Star Wars really wouldn't feel the same if they weren't in the movie.

I have read countless times that R2 and 3PO are the only characters which appear in every episode of every trilogy. This concept was part of Lucas' plan from very early on. Having those droids in every (main saga) film is as dependable and predictable as an opening crawl. No debate, really.

But if you only go off of the films, it's implied that threepio was built from scratch by Anakin in TPM.

I know I got that impression when I saw TPM in 1999 he did also call Anakin his creator in TAOTC.

Yea, 3-PO and R2 should be in every episode. And maybe even cameo in the Spin-off when able.
I loooved the Star Tours episode in Rebels. Something like that would be fun.
But yea, they need to stay with the Skywalker family for generations to come.

R2 even was in frekkin Star Trek! Star Trek! Our mortal enemies!

Yes, but only as easter egg. It's part of the fragments of debris in some explosions.
By the way, R2 also appear as easter egg in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, as part of one of the alien ships (the big mothership, IIRC)
And I think both R2 and 3PO appear on a hieroglyph in Raiders of the Lost Ark
And the Millenium Falcon appears in Star Trek: First Contact at the initial battle against the Borg cube
And the list goes and goes...
Just easter eggs, nothing to be taken really seriously

Lucas has said that the SW story/saga is essentially told/remembered through the eyes of "those two droids".
