After a long day blasting Resistance X-Wings out of the skies even the bravest Imperial pilots need some rest. But those Rebel scum like to attack when we least expect it, so I made a TIE Fighter bed for my son, just in case the Empire needs him to defend the base after hours.

Here's the amazingly sexy Mrs. Nerfect holding the footboard of the bed.

The viewport window pieces are plexiglass and they're secured with vinyl dividers. The body is medium density fiberboard (MDF). I used a router for almost all of the cutting. Hidden inside the wing pylons are 3/8" bolts that the bed rails can secure onto. It's 61" wide, which is big enough for a double bed and a little room to spare for the wings.

For the wings I'm going with the Advanced Tie Fighter design, with the tops and bottoms sloping inward.

The wings are being built out of screen door material with a 1x4 frame. I'm adding some green lights on the bottom side of the wings to illuminate the floor beneath the bed. The bottom of the wings will sit about 4" above the floor when installed.

More pictures to come, and constructive feedback is always welcome.

This is child abuse. The first time your son sleeps in the bed it's likely to explode or catch fire and crash into a wall. I'd go with something that's shielded better. A Star Destroyer perhaps.

Star Destroyer? That's for officers only, like Mrs. Nerfect and me. If he survives eight more years in a TIE Fighter then he can apply to the Academy and earn a command of his own.

An X-Wing just isn't a good shape for a bed. If you insist on going Light Side I suggest Luke's landspeeder. It's length x height x width are roughly the size of a standard mattress already. Or you could make a Y-Wing with the mattress up high, but the nose is going to be a tripping hazard.

Whatever you and your dad decide to do please send pictures!

Update - We painted the bedroom black today, and installed a HUGE Death Star light globe. Next weekend we'll paint miniature stars on the walls. The wing sections of the TIE Fighter are built, but I'm waiting until we move back home before I put them together. We're living at our son's house during the remodel and I can't figure out how to load the fully assembled wings onto a Dodge Ram pickup truck, so the final pics of the TIE Fighter bed will have to wait until we get back home.

It doesn't have to be just a joke, Bloo. If you want a Star Wars themed bedroom and are willing to mow lawns all summer to earn some money for what you want then may the Force be with you and your parents, too. If your middle school offers a woodshop class you'll have a project you all semester. If not, and your dad is kinda good with tools, then print some schematics off the Internet and build it yourselves. I'll share some pointers if you'd like - I was a CNC machinist in a cabinet shop for years.

    Make your dreams come true.

But it was actually a joke, don't stretch this out this far.
