So I got to thinking, and I'm wondering what you all think about the timeframe of the ST; how much time will pass between each film?

For reference, let's look at the PT and the OT. The PT starts in 32 BBY (Before Battle of Yavin) with TPM; AOTC takes place 10 years later in 22 BBY; ROTS is set about 3 years later in 19 BBY. The OT starts 19 years later in 0 BBY with ANH; ESB follows roughly 3 years later in 3 ABY; ROTJ finishes the trilogy roughly a year later in 4 ABY. TFA picks up some 30+ years after this.

So we have gaps of 10 and 3 years between the first a second movies of the PT, versus 3 and 1 years between films in the OT, and a 19 year gap between the two.

Given those numbers, how do you think the ST with relate? Personally, I don't see them spreading the new episodes out too long, nothing like the 10 year gap between TPM and AOTC. I predict something like 2 years between TFA and VIII, and 3 years between VIII and IX.

Anyone else care to chime in?

I agree that there probably won't be huge gaps of time between the events of these new sequel films. There's no need to keep stretching out the timeline, especially since 30+ years will have passed since ROTJ,

I wouldnt be surprised if there was only a year or two between each film.

I suppose if the gaps of time between the films helped further the story along, I wouldn't mind. But they really don't need much time to have passed to help further the characters or plot. We saw a significant change with Luke's character between ESB and ROTJ and only a year had passed.

Also, Luke, Leia, and Han will be old enough as it is without them adding more years between the films.

The gap between films will be long enough such that we will see real improvement in Rey's Jedi powers and skills as each episode progresses.

It would seem that nowadays you see a lot more movie series in the theaters and they seem to be more tightly spaced together. Take the Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I couldn't see a ten year gap happening again except if we ever see an Episode X.

My guess would be 1-2 years at most.

Judging by the rumor that Rey doesn't find Luke until the last scene of the movie, Episode VIII may pick up right where VII leaves off.

On a hunch, I feel they'lll go with the shorter time periods in between each film, between 1-3 years or so. As someone else said, there's already the 30+ year gap of the OT and the ST, so no need to drag it out too much.

Yeah but the LOTR doesn't exactly count, as in the book there's very little time difference between the stories anyways. Maybe a few weeks, enough for the characters to get just a tiny bit further ahead, but it was all supposed to be part of one book anyways. Never read the Hunger Games so on that I'm not sure.

The Marvel stuff certainly is a valid case, though to be honest I can never keep track of what the time difference between them all is supposed to be. The X-Men films definitely made a jump or two at least.

I was thinking, between the end of chapter 1 and start of chapter 2, there is clearly credibility with how the characters have evolved.

PT: Palpatine is chancellor, Obi-Wan is a Jedi Knight, Anakin is a Padawan, Padme is now swerving as Senator to her planet.
OT: Vader is hunting down the heroes, Han and Luke are now considered heroes, Leia is practically still the same.

I'm guessing for VIII, Rey will be accepting her destiny and wielding Excalibur and Poe will be captain of the Resistance space forces. If Finn goes from stormtrooper to suddenly being a Jedi, it would be a huge step too far.
