With the way The Force Awakens ended, it made sense to continue The Last Jedi where we left. Of course, we could have a time jump in TLJ after the opening scene, but let's presume that there isn't one save for time set aside for space travel (which was always elastic in GFFA anyway).

TLJ continues the events of TFA: First Order offensive after destruction of Hosnian system, Republic in disarray, Resistance trying to keep the fight going, Finn recovering and joining the Resistance with intention this time, Rey going on Force journey with Luke... Depending where they all end up, do we have a time jump between The Last Jedi and Episode IX? How long? Do we need it? Do we want it?

Personally, while I want to see Luke's first words, Leia's first actions after Starkiller Base was destroyed, Finn's recovery and everything else, I feel that overall story need some time to breath. So, I would like at least 2-3 time jump between VIII and IX. What do you think?

A time jump would be great. It would leave room for the expanded universe to tell more stories within the time frame of this trilogy. They could even do a TV show set between the movies a la "The Clone Wars."

Which is exactly what I think they're going to do. And if they don't do this, then they'll do a series that follows the events of Episode IX.

There will be a time jump by the help of a training montage in TLJ. I like to compare it with the training montage of the movie Rocky.

I also think they will let time pass between TLJ and EPIX.

A time jump would be tough with addressing Lelia's dying or whatever they end up doing

Well, I was hoping they wouldn't kill her, but that's just me.

It may actually help. If she lives through TLJ but we don't see her in IX then her death may need to be explained or covered in more detail in the expanded universe. With a time jump they could address it in a Journey to IX novel.

I think that would be a shame because Leia is such a big deal...imagine if Han's death by his son was addressed like that

If so, they are going to sell A LOT of books. Can I just pre-order mine now?

Claudia Gray seems like the obvious choice to pen such a novel based on her recent work on Bloodline and the upcoming Leia: Princess of Alderaan.

They most likely have her on speed-dial for anything Leia-related at this point.

I'm hoping that they address what happens to her in a visual medium as well. I'm a huge proponent of them doing an animated prologue to Episode IX explaining her fate.

Why not? Lucas did an animated prologue for ROTS. And that was when Lucasfilm Animation was first created. Now it is a such a well-oiled machine they can put together the type of high-quality production needed for this story.

I imagine there will be a time jump post VIII and pre IX but until we see the movie it will hard to say how large of a jump.

It would seem now that if there is a time jump, it wont be in the beginning. I believe in some of the fleeting footage that has been released, Finn is shown recovering from his fight with Kylo and Poe is hovering over him. To me this would indicate that if there is a time jump at the beginning, it may only be a few weeks at the most.

My only stipulation for a time jump is that, if they do use one, I hope it isn't as long as the jump between TPM and AOTC. So much could have happened from one movie to the next that you would be excused for wondering how TPM belongs to the same trilogy.

So right now we have TFA, that seems to take place over just a day or two.

    TFA leads right into TLJ.

If TLJ leads right into EPIX (assuming no time jumps in EPIX) then then trilogy would basically take place in less than a week.

But I seriously doubt that'll happen.

First, I think TLJ will have a time jump at some point. Rey needs to train. I hope this jump is addressed at least a little more clearly than the training in ESB (which seems like it could've taken place anywhere between a week and several months).

After that, I think that presumably we could have a pretty seamless transition right from TLJ to 9- and while I doubt it'll happen like that, here's why it could:

Much like ESB, I expect TLJ to end on a much darker note than TFA (even though Han's death was obviously pretty dark). Whatever happens, I'm sure the characters will want to get right into addressing it, something we'll probably see in the beginning of EPIX.

Consider, for instance, how the time jump between ANH and ESB was significantly bigger than ESB and ROTJ (also why a lot of multimedia, like the comics, takes place in that pre-ESB sweet spot).
