The Rogue Squadron video games are not canon, making the only canon appearance the Battle of Hoth in Empire Strikes Back.

I thought they were, since they were officially licensed Lucasfilm products?
If they're not, then that's even more conjecture-based assumption that this is a film about X-Wing pilots, as we've never officially seen Rogue Squadron applied to them.
Ooh! A whole movie about snowspeeders!

Yep! Everything is "legends" besides the movies, Clone Wars series and what has been released since the Disney sale (Rebels, a few books, new comics, etc.)

The sale is not where the new canon material begins, it is the movies, clone wars, and everything released since the EU/Legends/canon announcement which was a little less than a year ago I think.

I believe we will get a new telling of the rogue squadron story but not sure what time frame, centered around Rogue Leader aka Rogue One.

I think it would make more sense if this was post ROTJ, and this is a new leader in Rogue Squadron.

That way we don't have to get a repeat of "Who stole the Death Star plans" and we can get a fresh, new, and exciting spinoff.

Agreed. I'd like after TFA myself but I'd be happy with that.

Yeah, I feel having it set after ROTJ leaves plenty of open space (no pun intended) for the story to go wherever, and we aren't constrained to having it set during the OT. It could help fill in the void between the two trilogies.

Agreed. We are already getting tons of media set between RotS - ANH & ANH - ESB.

I believe Anakin's squad was the shadow squadron. The ship in Rebels is the Ghost and all the members of the team go by the call sign Specter 1, 2, 3 and so on. Ahsoka is firmly apart of the same fledgling rebel alliance as the crew of the Ghost so it could very well be that there is a rogue group that preceded Luke.

I guess I'm the only one who would love to see the Death Star plans get stolen in one of the spinoff movies. Lol. I thought that would be fascinating and original. Either Death Star would do.

I'm not concerned about the Death Star plans....I'd like to see the formation of Rogue Squadron and how it came to be.....or ended.

i always imagined the stealing of the Death Star plans as being handled out by some rebel spies, who sneaked into the empire, pretending to be a normal employee (double agents). just like you would set up a spy in an intelligence agency. if they make a movie about this, it wouldn't be Star Wars, but some Tom Clancy stuff.

I'm a huge fan of works like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy but Star Wars isn't suited for intensity realistic espionage.

I've mentioned before a James Bond type spy film set in Cold War torn Coruscant is a spin off I'd want to see. Maybe if I write a really good treatment for it I could see it one day haha.

From what I've understood, that's kind of the reported synopsis for "Underworld"...if it ever gets off the ground!

Well, the basic scenario has been laid out since 1977.

Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.

This is why really hope this whole thing about Boba Fett and a bunch of bounty hunters stealing the Death Star plans for the Rebels is the load of bunk that it sounds like it is. IF they do a movie about the acquisition of the Death Star plans, I hope that it expands on what's been established since 1977, rather than being something almost completely unrelated that requires lawyerly double-talk in order to sorta-kinda justify. We had enough of that with the PT, and IMHO it'd be nice to get away from that for a change.

And this is how the band of Rebels, perhaps with Kanan and Ahsoka, pass off the plans to the Princess.

Yes, but's not clear how they stole it. Did they work undercover for the empire? Did they spy on imperials? Did they track imperial messages?

However I am not quite sure if a movie about this would be such entertaining. As I stated before, sounds more like some Tom Clancy stuff. Can be entertaining, but it's not Star Wars.

So, I hope ”Rogue One” has another story. Maybe a backstory of some character from OT or PT or even ST?

    Or what about this:
”Rogue One” is about a team of PILOTS OF THE EMPIRE . So we would have imperials as main characters and could see everything from a totall different point of view.
    Like this fanmade short movie.

Has anyone read the 50 page preview of Lords of the Sith? Here are my thoughts concerning that story, this movie, and the connection I think is present based on the recent rumors:

First, we know that the LGBT character in LOTS is going to appear onscreen in this film and that according to a recent rumor it is going to feature an agricultural planet. Well, if you have read those first three chapters, you will know that the new Moff's fat ass sits on her throne on the moon above Ryloth and pretty much never leaves, while Cham Syndullah's "terrorists" do their thing on the planet below. Ryloth happens to be the Empire's main source of Rhyll (agriculture). My guess? Chams small band of Rebels has grown and now includes our friends Ahsoka, Kanan, Ezra and Cham's daughter Hera and they are stealing the plans. Boom

The one thing they have to factor in if they're going to do a Death Star plans heist movie is, the overwhelming implication in ANH was that Rebels were operating out of Yavin 4 when they hit the Imperials and stole the plans.

True, the opening crawl does not explicitly mention Yavin 4, but it does state that the battle was fought by "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base..."

Now then, what was Vader and Tarkin's white whale throughout the movie? What information were they trying to extract from Princess Leia via the mind probe and the destruction of Alderaan? The location of the hidden Rebel base. Which, of course, turned out to be Yavin 4.

These are the kinds of details that can't simply be blown off if there is to be any real continuity. IF Rogue One is about the theft of the Death Star plans, then one of the main elements of that must be a Rebel starship assault originating from Yavin 4. Perhaps it's a diversion to cover the actions of their spies, or perhaps the attack itself is part of the actual extraction of the data.

Personally, I hope that the whole thing doesn't revolve around the cast of Rebels. For one thing, I don't think I could stomach a whole movie that revolves around the antics of a bickering sitcom "family" who happen to fly a starship. More importantly, though, to include them in a movie about the theft of the Death Star plans would mean leaping forward in time several years or so from the events in the TV cartoon, and that would mean that Rebels viewers would then know for certain who ultimately survives the series and who doesn't. I cannot imagine that LFL/Disney would limit themselves that way.

I'd rather see them stealing the plans for the Second Death Star. Maybe we'll get to see those Bothans die.
