    Spoilers Ahead

After my husband and I saw TLJ, we both had mixed feelings about it. There were things we really liked and things we didn't like, though we generally leaned towards a more positive view, giving it about a B-. We had a lot to discuss afterwards, and decided we could organize our thoughts if we each took time to write down 10 things we liked and 10 things we didn't like about the film. It was a good springboard for discussion, and I figured why not try it out here! I'd love to see your own dislikes/likes, and how you agree/disagree.

Getting negatives out the way, I didn't like...

    1. CGI Casino alien race dog things...I know Rose loved them, but sorry they are no taun tauns. I just didn't connect with them, too cartoony.
    2. CGI ice dog things...just too pokemon and cartoony for me. (Yes, I am practical effects biased But I LOVED the Porgs.)
    3. The lack of reaction to Leia's "space walk".I had no problem with Leia doing this or the scene itself, but the lack of reaction/questioning from the observers seemed off. If it was Luke who did the same thing, the act would have been met with astonishment and applause. Leia has never used the Force in this way before and it should have been greeted with greater fanfare.
    4. Rey being a "nobody". Sorry, I don't like it. I get where they are going with it but she's too powerful to really be a nobody. The main reason I don' t like it is because of all the build-up and intrigue surrounding her in TFA. (The island, Obi-wan's voice, her connection to the lightsaber etc.) It was all just for a fake out? Really?
    5. Too Easy for Rey- I really like Rey and Daisy's performances, but everything comes way too easy for her. I was looking forward to more character development and real hard struggles. I wanted to see her truly have to fight and I expected more difficulties with her training with Luke (mirroring Luke in ESB). She has a lot of potential but the character could benefit from more challenges. If she struggled throughout her time on the island, her heroic moment with the rocks would have had a bigger impact.
    6. Snoke... again, this is my CGI bias. Why couldn't he just be a costume/make-up? I just didn't care for Snoke as a villainand was glad to see him dispatched.
    7. Not Enough Phasma! I was thrilled to see her and delighted in her scenes. But ,alas,She was underused and I have my fingers crossed for a reappearance in the next installment.
    8. "Evil Casino" Fell Flat- I had no problem with the Rose/Finn adventure at the casino. I did have a problem with the forced "it's so eeevil" with too much telling and not enough showing. We're introduced to an evil casino because...they dress pretty? And a random guy is mean to the those CGI things? They're the 1% or something? The mistreated kids were a good start but we really didn't see enough of the "evil" to get me to hate the casino so much. Which brings me to...
    9. Forced Rose Backstory I like Rose. But they didn't need Rose to have any commentary on the casino planet. Her character focus should have been on her sister's death and her disappointment in her hero (being a deserter). The evil casino plot just wasn't established well enough with Rose's random exposition and we didn't get to know her long enough or see her suffer at the hands of the evil casino master. It muddled her character development.
    10. Luke's Death. I know some will disagree on this. I am not against characters dying, and in fact, wanted to see Luke go in Ep 9. But we are treated to one of the greatest fake outs in SW history to have that long lost SW high of "We did it!" ...to be shortly dashed two minutes later when Luke's cloak blows away in the wind. I wanted more Luke. I know he'll return as a Force Ghost, but I would have preferred to see more real-life interaction as he emerged from hiding to help the rebels once more. Adding to the fact is the unfortunate passing of Carrie Fisher. Based on previous interviews, I was under the impression that Episode 9 was going to have a big Leia focus. With Luke gone, we're left with no originals from the previous films. While I do like the new heroes, I don't know if they have the same spark to helm the third installment on their own.

    Now for the Positives...

    1. New Characters.....I enjoyed Del Toro, Rose, General Holdo. She was my favorite and I loved the progression I experienced with "I don't like this lady"...to "she's actually rather cool"...to "I LOVE her"...to..."NOOO DON'T DIE! COME BACK!" What an epic moment. Which leads me to...

    2. Holdo's Epic Sacrifice. Great moment. Exciting, powerful, and meaningful.

    3. New Settings. The settings were strong with this one. I loved the real "Star Wars" feel of these settings. The salt mines made for a thrilling location for the rebellion fight and Luke's island was just fantastic. I loved the distinct and tangible elements the new settings provided.

    4. Luke. I was on the fence about seeing Luke portrayed as a jaded hermit, but I really enjoyed Hamill's performance and it was interesting to see the change in character. I still have my issues with whether Luke really would act this way, but I did enjoy it and believe it when I saw the film.

    5. Yoda Cameo. I LOVED seeing the Yoda I knew. Finally. REAL Yoda. The dialogue with Luke was a great moment.

    6. Poe. Poe stole the show this time. Finn was my favorite in TFA. This time it was Poe (of the new 3). I found his scenes riveting and his character added the fun and humor that was needed. I particularly enjoyed his mother/son bond with General Leia.

    7. Reylo Lightsaber Fight- Not a shipper of this pairing but I loved the fight sequence. It made for a great combat scene.

    8. Porgs. No explanation required.

    9. Hologram Fake-Out. Luke's hologram fake-out scene was epic.

    10. Rebel Base Battle- I loved the Salt Mines and the Rebel Base battle. The setting was great, the pacing was exciting, and forcing the heroes to pilot barely crummy/old vehicles was a nice touch and added to the thrill of the scene.

So all and all, there was lots to like and lots to disagree with...which makes for the best discussions! I would love to read your own "Top Tens" and see where you stand on TLJ.

    Alright, let's see here...

    Negatives (in no specific order)
    1. Overreliance on humor, which in many cases tended to be almost like a fourth-wall-breaking parody.
    2. Too many payoffs without setups, plot twists for the sake of plot twists which made it feel like a TV series.
    3. Weird editing where important scenes are suddenly cut and switched to another scene, again much like a TV series.
    4. Poor explanation to what's going on in the galaxy, First Order not making sense, Republic not making sense.
    5. The whole light speed chase/Holdo's plan/Canto Bight mission subplot.
    6. Luke's character. For example: almost killing his own nephew for sensing the Dark side, when he was the only one who believed there was still good in Vader. Luke is a completely different character in TLJ and doesn't make sense.
    7. Missed opportunity to make Rey NOT a Mary Sue. Now she is.
    8. Rose's character. No need to talk about it, there's just nothing to like.
    9. Space Leia.
    10. Too many SJW undertones.

    Positives (in no specific order)
    1. Force connection between Rey and Kylo, the most interesting part of the movie.
    2. Amazing visuals
    3. Great sound effects
    4. Breathtaking special effects
    5. Poe's character, the most sane and intelligent person in the whole movie.
    6. DJ's character, could've done more with him though.
    7. A few jokes were a bit funny....
    8. Death of Holdo?
    9. I'm really pushing it now, but.... great soundtrack I guess?
    10. Hmm... I'm out.

    Dislikes:
    1. The action was poorly directed.
    2. Main plot was lame, just a boring chase which was too dull to really pay attention to. This main part of the story wasn't memorable or engaging to me.
    3. The humour was an obvious step down from JJ/Kasdan's work on episode 7.
    4. Luke was odd, they twisted and turned him from scene to scene in order make plot/new characters' motivations work. He should have had one very clear direction and the plot should have revolved around him more.
    5. The space horses, the damn space horses.
    6. The set design wasn't great for me. Snoke's throne room was way too basic, some of the rocks on Ach-to looked obviously fake.. the inside of the tree was badly done and looked plastic. It was insulting when compared to the set design on movies like Blade Runner 2049.. which is sad because this was always a massive strength of Star Wars.
    7. Crait was such a one dimensional, boring planet.. and it was such a blatant, blatant ripoff of Hoth.
    8. The Luke force projection ending lacked meat, it lacked substance.. his ending wasn't good enough.
    9. Rey's behavior throughout the film was bratty and arrogant, the film damaged her character in my opinion.
    10. Hux SUCKS.

    Likes:

    1. Dialogue was more wordy and substantial than The Force Awakens.
    2. The film had a unique feel to it.
    3. Some of Luke's moments, Mark Hamill did really well with what he was given.
    4. I liked what they did with Finn and how they kept him important to the plot, outside of the whole stupid romance subplot they've put him on with Rose.
    5. Poe was made more rough around the edges, I like how they've made him more grey and given him a much bigger role in this one.
    6. Leia was still given importance to the plot, and I liked how she was made a lot more royal in appearance. The whole "General Leia" thing threw it too much away from her royal background for me.. this fixed that.
    7. I liked how it tried to be weird and slightly step out from what was safe, in small ways.. I appreciated the Canto Bight sequence for that reason.
    8. I liked how Rian brought it back to the prequel style a little bit, and even helped make the prequels look better.
    9. While I didn't like the action overall and thought it was poorly done, I liked the scene with the bomber trying to get the detonator.. it was a very tense and engaging scene.
    10. I like what they did with Snoke, he was incredibly menacing and interesting.. CG was very good and I also like the timing and method that he died. As much as he became a good villain and then suddenly died.. i'd much prefer a non-CGI villain (i.e. Kylo)

    In no specific order:

    NEGATIVES:

    1) weak side plot (the Luke, Rey and Kylo plot was good though)
    2) Canto Bight
    3) Rose and Holdo weren't interesting enough to care about
    4) no backstory for Snoke
    5) Superman Leia
    6) bad and/or forced humor
    7) Broom boi
    8) supportive characters were weak or were mocked
    9) the movie was too long (=> pacing felt off sometimes)

    POSITVES:

    1) Kylo Ren (Adam Driver was the best actor in this movie)
    2) Luke's portrayal
    3) relationship between Kylo and Rey
    4) the whole Throne Room sequence
    5) the visuals (Crait and Ahch-To looked great)
    6) best space explosion ever
    7) Rey is a nobody
    8) Yoda
    9) great use of fanservice by bringing back Leia's hologram from ANH
    10) soundtrack

    Dislikes:
    1. Some cheesy lines (not that those are anything new). "Chrome dome" sounded too modern-action-flick for me.
    2. Luke milking the sea cow.
    3. The Canto Bight casino scenes (for the most part).
    4. Some of the BB-8 humor was too much. BB-8 in this movie reminded me of R2-D2 of the prequels.
    5. The scenes in Snoke's throne room were a little too similar to ROTJ for me, even though I really liked them.
    6. Rose saving Finn and their kiss was kinda dumb.
    7. I didn't have too much of a problem with the Leia space scene, it just looked strange.
    8. Didn't it occur to Rose and Finn that those slave kids would probably get punished for helping them and releasing the fathiers?
    9. I didn't really care for Maz Kanata's role.
    10. Captain Phasma was disappointing again.

    Likes:
    1. The music.
    2. Poe Dameron's role in the movie, though I felt that he should've gotten a little more punishment for his actions, especially since he incidentally led the First Order to Crait.
    3. All of the scenes in Snoke's throne room.
    4. DJ and the message he tried to send to Finn was interesting.
    5. The suspense that left me on the edge of my seat.
    6. Most of the scenes involving Luke and/or Leia.
    7. I know that a lot of it was out of place, but I don't care: I loved most of the humor in this movie!
    8. Yoda's scene.
    9. The space battle. Really all of the action was pretty good.
    10. Kylo Ren!
Bonus: the worldbuilding in this movie was much better than TFA IMO.
Extra Bonus: subverting our expectations. I loved that they killed off Snoke and how Rey's parents are nobodies.

I'll start with the likes first, that'll be more challenging.

    1) Snoke dying
    2) Rey nobody (just please give me some background to how she aquired her skills in the future)
    3) Throne room scene was good
    4) Leia finally using the force. (I really wanted to see this, too bad he kind of bungled it in execution)
    5) Luke as a grumpy hermit. (minus the saber toss and igniting ls contemplating murder of his nephew)
    6) Visuals
    7) Sound track
    8) Poe
    9) Locations were neat, mostly well done.
    10) Yoda ghost I guess, and the porgs were alright

    worst ten

    1) Making the bad guys look like idiots instead of intimidating/menacing.
    2) Holdo
    3) Rose, whole rose subplot
    4) Which leads into Canto Blight (I can probably make a list of 10 on that alone)
    5) Slow motion chase
    6) BB8 chickenwalker driver
    7) The humor was mostly off for me.
    8) Plot twists misdirection were overdone imo.
    9) That I can't mention Finn anywhere except here, his character under used.
    10) Kylo's shirtless scene just felt awkward.

So a family decides whether she is a Mary Sue or not... That's stupid. She's a nobody who is gifted by the force, like Anakin.

Also, I'm sure there's a person who believes that if Rey had been a Skywalker she would have been a Mary Sue. Besides, Mary Sue is just a vapid term that tells nothing about the character it describes.

    Positives:

    1. Mark Hamill. Fantastic performance.

    2. Adam Driver. I often find Kylo Ren to be a screeching, tantrum throwing child, but Driver somehow sells the character for me.

    3. Poe. Like this character and want a better story for him.

    4. Finn. Same deal as Poe, please give this character more to do.

    5. The acting overall was good.

    6. The Luke/Leia scene was good and the only thing that stirred any emotion in me.

    7. Porgs were cute.

    8. Great visuals and effects.

    9. Yoda's appearance.

    10. Soundtrack.

    Negatives:

    1. Story that went nowhere and meant nothing in the end.

    2. Luke milking a giant space cow with 4 boobs.

    3. Leia Poppins

    4. Snoke build up then let down.

    5. Mary Sue Rey still. Don't bother arguing with me, that's how I view Ms. Perfect.

    6. Canto Bight, the point was?

    7. I love BB8, but they went a little too far with him being a super droid.

    8. Making Hux a buffoon. THIS is one of the leaders of the FO?

    9. Stupid humor that made it feel more like Space Balls then Star Wars.

    10. Luke's death.

I could probably go on with more negatives.

Oh God, that part is so bad. It was just as cheesy as anything from the prequels.

OK, let's try. I'm treating this just as a fun challenge, because for me the positives make the negatives look quite insignificant, so it's not like 50/50. :) Random order.

    Positives:
    1. Luke. His arc, his characterisation, the way he looked, the costumes, all his scenes... This includes the handling of his death.
    2. Kylo Ren. Amazing acting, very powerful scenes, great job at humanising him and explaining what pushed him to the dark side.
    3. The mythological quality of Luke's final stand. And just the whole thing as a scene... Pure gold.
    4. Literally everything that happened in the Supremacy throne room.
    5. Yoda's scene.
    6. The directing and cinematography are top-notch.
    7. The music.
    8. The new planets. Ahch-To: the landscapes, the tree, the vibe of it all... Crait: the red dust and red explosions = stroke of genius; Cantonica: love the design of Canto Bight + incorporating the horse racing culture was a great idea.
    9. Acting across the board. Mark and Adam stand out the most, but the rest of the cast did great too - I think Oscar Isaac is amazingly natural as Poe + Boyega was better than he was in TFA, where he overacted a lot. Oh, and obviously Carrie. After TFA I thought her acting must be irreversibly rusty, but she delivered big time in TLJ.
    10. The film is thought-provoking and multilayered, which sparks very interesting discussions. It gave us so much to talk about on pretty deep levels. This is one of the things I love about Star Wars the most.

I could name tons of details I loved, but since this is meant to be a list of 10, I wanted to highlight the big stuff.

    Negatives:
    1. There should at least be a mention of who Snoke is. It could have been done easily in a Luke/Rey dialogue. Nothing much, I just need to place him somewhere in the context of the whole Saga. For his own sake. Making us perceive Snoke as Emperor 2.0 weakens the character.
    2. Rose's juvenile moral in Canto Bight, a seeming generalisation of rich=evil. Yeah, it's the character's point of view etc. but it still comes across as making a point. After multiple viewings I've noticed stuff that redeems this aspect in my eyes, but it's still kind of a negative.
    3. A huge chunk of the film takes place in spaceship interiors, which means that the same huge chunk is kind of bland visually. You know... Just corridors and rooms that we're used to. Of course, the plot called for it, so it's not a huge gripe.
    4. I'm not a fan of the epilogue scene. It's a great one on its own, but I'd prefer if the movie ended with our main heroes. I feel like the ending loses its momentum because of the last scene. It's a hard reset that abruptly takes us out of the big stuff that happened. Moreover, the boy using the Force is too much IMO. Makes the message waaaay too direct.
    5. Topless Kylo felt totally out of place.
    6. Poe/Hux banter was slightly drawn out. It's a funny bit, but I felt like we're kicking the film off with a bit too much silliness.
    7. "Rebel scum" - cheeeesy.
    8. Holdo is quite uninteresting as a character.
    9. Leia in space. I don't mind what the scene tells us about her connection to the Force and the fact that she survived something like this, but the execution was over-the-top.
    10. Um... I don't know... Let's say the humour in general was a bit too much. Felt like the film was trying to be funnier than it wanted to be.

As for Maz, I actually liked her portrayal here. She felt more like a proper space pirate and not a discount Yoda. ;)

    Dislikes - not in order

    1. Maz Kanata's scene. Tone down the shooting and talking.
    2. Leia Poppins. Execution, not her using the force.
    3. Political Animal cruelty messaging. Also, saying people in Canto Bight were all bad because they had money.
    4. Rose having a music theme.
    5. Tallie dying. We need a new Wedge. She's hot. Enough said.
    6. Lack of Artoo. HE'S A LEGEND! Give him some screen time.
    7. BB-8 was too badass. The AT-ST scene was cringeworthy. Chewies scene in ROTJ was way better.
    8. Kylo and Rey lightsaber tug of war. Them sliding backwards was kind of lame.
    9. Hux's scene in the opening was overplayed. It felt like Robot Chicken.
    10. Rey lifting so many boulders. Only because I'm tired of hearing people on here complain about it.

    Likes - not in order

    1. Artoo playing the Leia message. I could have watched Luke and Artoo for like 20 minutes!
    2. Snoke. Loved every second and hung on his every word.
    3. Luke. Loved Luke. Period. Haters, BTFO.
    4. Chewie flying the Falcon like a friggin boss on Crait!!!
    5. Kylo/Rey. This was new, it was acted perfectly, and you hung on their every word, just like Snoke.
    6. Finn. Boyega pulls off an otherwise weak plot for him. His charm shines through. Give the man a lightsaber in 9.
    7. Luke and Leia. Pitch perfect. Almost cried.
    8. Porgs. Done perfectly.
    9. Soundtrack. John WIlliams made this film epic.
    10. LUKE WALKING OUT OF THE REBEL BASE....the music building....the Resistance watching in awe...facing down the First Order...and Kylo's reaction...the whole darn scene was amazing, unexpected and epic. Edge of your seat stuff. Luke's death was also just so perfect and emotional.

    Dislikes:
    -Plotholes
    -no connections to TFA
-humour that fell flat and didn't belong in the SW universe
-reason why Kylo turned and fallout with Luke - they could have come up with something way better than this - just stupid
-lack of development for Rey, Finn
-the deconstruction of Luke Skywalker --it's like taking your favorite literary fictional character and tearing it apart (for the most part)
-the death of Luke - underwhelming - needed to be treated with greater reverence and be more emotionally resonant
-subverting expectations for the sake of subverting expectations
    -Leia Poppins
-lack of creativity.relations between characters e.g. Luke and Rey
-reveal of Rey's parentage - underwhelming
    -flying Leia through space
    -parody/Spaceballs
    -Canto Bight?
    -OOPS , gone over ten.
-killing of Snoke - WHAT A WASTE
-don't feel invested in these characters and wanting to know what happens next.
    -milking scene - really??

    Likes: - acting very good
    -Luke and R2 D2
-Luke and Leia - these two scenes felt satisfying
-Luke and Kylo - great scene even if it was jarring to watch Luke all of sudden with dark hair
-Kylo and Rey- saber fight scene
    -seeing Yoda again

    Dislikes in no particular order.

1.) Rose's lame side story: I liked the character of Rose, yet I feel that she would have been much better had this stupid and convenient
Side story not existed. What? They just happen to be going to the one planet that Rose hates? Come on. Lazy writing and pointless. Rose would have been far more interesting had that just made her dealing with her sisters death. We didn't need some half
assed commentary on how bad rich and pretty people are. If they wanted to play the sympathy card and make us hate the
people of Canto Bite, they should have introduced us to her enslaved under the city, suffering and being mistreated. Sorry Rose, we literally met you two seconds
ago. I know more about Justin Theroux at the dice table at this point than you and Its hard to feel bad for you just springing this story on us.

2.) Shirtless Kylo Ren: Fan service. I Get it. He's the Hot Topic Poster selling, brooding, loki-rip off character of the moment. I don't see it, but far be
it for me to deny other fans seeing some goods. But this seemed desperate and cheesy. Couldn't they have at least made him get his
shirt ripped in a battle or something? Or like, Torn off by a wild pack of porgs? He's just sitting there with his shirt off like " durrrrrr".

3 and 4) CGI crap animals: Wow, there were some doozies in this one. Those horrible horse foxes or whatever they were on Canto Bite. Sorry Rose, now I hate your side story even more now that these things are involved. Also, Those Evolved Ice Eevee's that escaped from Pokemon and into the shelter in Crait. We didn't need them at all, the rebels could have found an exit blocked by rocks without cgi pocket monsters. They cheapened a great scene. Both looked really bad. Please stick to muppets and practical effects!

5.) Reaction to Leia's Space Jam: I've waited years to see Leia use the force. To show that she had the capabilities to tap into the powers of the Jedi. She finally does. She's sucked out into space to the icy vacuum of death! Her body begins to freeze. Suddenly something amazing happens! Leia used the force! She floats back from death, past the bodies and wreckage and carnage. She's alive! Shes back! And everyones like " Oh hey, Leia...your back thats cool. Lets get you to a hospital room.".....WTF!?!?! Zero reaction from anyone! I've seen people react more in line at Starbucks.

6.) Snoke: And he couldn't have been a guy in makeup why? Looked terrible. Took me out of the moment.

7.) Luke Dies: If you were gonna kill him anyways, why not just make him have been there for real? Don't get me happy that he didn't really get stabbed and that it was an illusion and then just have him fall over and vanish a second later.

8.) Wheres the Phasma? She's great, but she's in both movies for ten seconds! I hope she survived the latest battle to fight another day, and if she did I hope she's in it for a nice chunk of time!

9.) Kylo Ren: I hate him. I hate looking at him. Which means that the actor is doing a great job I guess, but I don't care. He killed Han Solo and you there's no coming back from that in my eyes.

10.) Non-stop force connection: The first time I was like, "ok thats cool." Then by the 45th time of Kylo and Rey force connecting I was done.

    LIKES

1.) Poe Dameron: He was the best part of the movie! They really beefed up his character and I loved his presence in the film. I found myself wanting the story getting back to Poe whenever we were following Finn or Rey.

2.) DJ: Very likeable new addition! Benicio Del Toro did a great job using what (unfortunate) little screen time he had making a memorable character that I
cant wait to see more of.

3.) Holdo and her sacrifice: At first I hated her. Then I loved her. I'm sorry but going into light speed into an enemy ship is bad-ass. I don't get why people aren't liking her as much as they should. Had some random Storm trooper done it, people would be pissing themselves with love for him/her.

4 and 5) Porgs and Nuns: For all the crappy new creatures that were introduced, two that i did like were The porgs and the nun aliens. The porgs were obviously cute AF and the nuns hating on Rey made me chortle.

6.) The new locales: From the " I want to live there" planet of Lukes hideaway to the bustling Canto Bite to the salt covered Crait, I really loked the new locales. I wish the story told on Canto Bite was better, but I really liked how it looked.,

7.) MUPPET YODA: I was so happy to see that Yoda was back! The actual Yoda that we all know and love, not that animated wreck. The scene with him and Luke had me riveted. The most Star Wars scene since the original three came out.

8.) Escape to Craig: From the moment the rebels begin boarding the transports to escape, to Holdo stopping the big ship, to the cannon, to Luke. The whole thing had my attention. I felt like I was finally SUPER engaged. Cut out those distracting crystal dogs and it would have been perfect!

9.) Leia Organa: She acted and looked more like how I pictured an elderly Princess Leia Organa would be. I appreciate that she will go out in my memory in such a way. R.I.P. Carrie

10.) Luke: I've never had any affinity towards Luke my entire life. It's not that I didn't like him, it's just that his character was always too boring for me. Too goodie-two-shoes. I've always been more of a Han guy. That being said I loved his transformation in this film. I know that a lot of people had trouble with him being the way he was but i loved it. He's an old man. He wouldn't act all giddy and gung ho and teenagery anymore. He's seen a ton of messed up stuff, he's creaky and old. Plus, people change and evolve, that's what life does to you. In Lukes case it made him more interesting, to me at any rate.
