I feel this could be interesting.. a lot of stuff happened in this film and everyone seems to have a different opinion on it.

    5 favorite moments
    1. Flashback of Luke almost killing Kylo (Kylo's version) - I love how dark Luke comes off in this scene and it was great acting from Hamill. It gave us a little more perspective into Kylo and Rey's motivations.
    2. Rose's sister passing out, and the tension while she was trying to get the detonator.
    3. Snoke's death.
    4. "I want every gunner we have to fire on that man." and the shoulder brush which followed. Best part of the film for me.
    5. The Yoda scene, but I have a nitpick which i'll mention in a minute.

    5 worst moments
    1. The space horse chase, the CGI was poor here overall and reminded me of any old garbage Hollywood fantasy movie.. even the music was too fantasy-esque for me. It wasn't Star Wars.
    2. Maz Kanata's video link where she's being shot at. This was the first moment which really lowered the standard of the film for me.. felt like a lame kid's cartoon.
    3. The moment where Rey and Kylo were pulling the lightsaber, and it broke apart as the ship was split by Holdo. Again, the sheer magnitude of coincidences going on here was so cheesy and cartoony. It tried way too hard to be epic.
    4. Leia flying.. but specifically the moment where she banged on the door. It looked like a different actress was doing this and it made me cringe a lot.
    5. The very first shot of Yoda in the tree burning scene, it didn't look like Yoda.. and it made no sense why we'd initially see the scene from Yoda's perspective like that. We should have heard him laughing and THEN we see him when Luke turns around (so we see him from Luke's perspective) it was weird to give people the money shot of Yoda so early in that scene.. it was confusing. It's like he'd already returned in a previous scene, but that scene was cut from the film.

    Negatives:
Too many attempts at humor fall flat.
    Boring planets.
Can outer space in a Star Wars movie be any more boring to look at? Can't we have for once some black holes, nebulae, space dust, etc?
Space battles are no longer thrilling to the point where they are now by rote.
Sick of Original Trilogy aesthetic. Can we move beyond the clunky, analog technology?
    Not enough aliens.
R2D2 once again relegated to irrelevance.
New characters that aren't very interesting.
Lack of interesting weapons of war. Tired of variations of the AT-AT. Give us something really new.
    Self-conscious screenplay.

    Positives:
Need to get back to you on that.

1 - Maz Kanata apparition (was not in person and was too fast).
2 - The Jedi Temple in Ach too, sometimes the light does not feel right, a little artificial (when they are outside, in that rock where Rey was sitting and Luke died)

    Thats all.

Great idea For A Thread! I don't know if I have ten things I dislike so I'll list as Many as I can think of
    Disliked:
1)How Holdo and Leia were being mean to Poe. Poor Poe.

2)Luke tossing the saber over the cliff. I don't know, it was just shocking And fell flat for me. Not a major deal though

3)The Sad Porg when he saw his buddy getting eaten by Chewie

    4) Finn and Rose being rude as heck to DJ despite getting their asses save by him over and over. DJ did betray them eventually but heck I can see why. They were being really rude to him.

    THINGS I LIKED
    1) Poe's Character. Thought he was awesome. Yeah obviously was too hot headed but He's the type of Leader the Resistance is gonna Need to Survive. He gets things done with The First Order is kicking in the door
2)THE PRIME JEDI Emblem and JEDI TEXTS in the cave. I thought it was cool To see such an ancient place And how the Legendary Texts were Not stored digitally but kept in it's original state. They really seemed super Old.
    3) the scenes when Rey kept nearly killing the Island Caretakers. How did she not accidentally murder one of them? My goodness she was not being careful
4)The Quick Fight with Rey and Luke. At first hand memory it seems like Rey out dueled Luke but when you rewatch it Luke obviously won the dueling. But hey, Rey had the saber so yeah -- a little unfair but she had to get Luke to answer her somehow.
5)Snoke's attire was amazing. Yes, it was overly gaudy. But that's why I liked it. He looked like Goldmember. And it was amazing.
6)General Hux was great. I get some people didn't like how he was "goofier" than he was in TFA, but I didn't think so. His scene with Poe at the start was hilarious. The way Hux smirked like an ass at Kylo as he walked by him out of Snoke's throne room, as if Hux wanted to let Kylo know that he earned the Supreme Leader's trust back. Just immature Hux.
I love how Gleeson plays the character. He really comes off as a true bipolar psychopath. I mean seriously Hux is a freaking wacko but he's great.

    7) R2D2 playing Leia's episode 4 holovid for Luke to get him back in the spirit
8)The Porgs being crazy on the Millennium Falcon on Crait

9)Kylo ordering all of the Walkers to fire at Luke and how Luke walked out at the end like a badass
    10) Kylo Ren and Rey vs the Praetorian Guards, and then their scene together afterwards. I could really feel the emotional pull the two had towards one another and I thought Daisy Ridley really sold her crying good. Kylo was funny when he said "NO, YOU'RE STILL HOLDING ON!" like a little child. I thought them pulling the saber apart was cool and showed how raw and powerful they are in the force. It was kind of like Kylo's redeeming test from the last film when he tried to grab the saber from the snow on Starkiller Base but it wooshed past him into Rey's hand. Matter of fact, the whole Snoke Throne Room scene with Kylo and Rey was amazing.

    1. The sexual tension between Rey and Kylo Ren.
    2. The cinematics of the cruiser hyperspace jumping through Snoke's ship. Just beautiful.
    3. Luke. He began the saga when a hologram of a Princess asked Luke for help. It ended with a hologram of Luke helping the Princess.
    4. "Let the past go. Kill it if you have to."
    5. Yoda.
    6. Luke dusting the debris off of his shoulder.
    7. Daisy Ridley looks beautiful and acts well. A fragile badass is hard to pull off but she did it convincingly.
    8. Rose Tico.
    9. "Do you think you got him?"
    10. The Millennium Falcon being the only ship left in the Resistance.
    Dislikes
    1. Canto Bight.
    2. The Resistance Fleet running out of fuel. Felt like weak storytelling.
    3. The throne room fight against the red guards. It was like a bad 1970s kung fu movie and felt really out of place.
    4. Snoke. Never really liked the character in the first movie, and he seemed even more of an Peedunky in TLJ.
    5. The clownification of Hux.
    6. The lack of First Order protocols. Seriously, don't you guys have a book somewhere that says "When engaging the Resistance Fleet, do this"?
    7. When Snoke's ship gets destroyed and somehow Rose, unarmored Rose, is the first to wake up while the Stormtroopers are all out cold.
    8. BB-8 at the controls of the Walker. I guess that's no different from Artoo piloting an X-Wing, but it just felt jarring in the theater.
    9. The crystal foxes looked fake. Like really, really fake.
    10. Luke whacking Rey's hand with a tree branch.

    2. Canto Bight Casino Scenes
    3. Holdo’s Cruiser Hyperdrive Weapon
    4. Ice Foxes... SW: Frozen Crossover
    5. Poe’s mutiny, felt uncharacteristic of him.
    6. BB-8 uses an AT-ST to prove he’s better than R2D2. Just too campy and cheesy.
    7. Phasma gets little screen time again and dies in lackluster way.
    8. Kylo Ren in High Pants. Its meme worthy and funny, but not badass and creepy like Vader’s mediation chamber.
    9. Kylo and Rey’s discussion about her being a nobody; it feels disjointed and put in later to subvert expectations.
    10. Luke and the nipple green juice creature.

    1. Cinematography is gorgeous
    2. Adam Drivers performance
    3. Fight choreography is most inventive since phantom menace.
    4. CGI for the most part is really impressive especially snoke
    5. Yoda scene
    Dislikes
    1. Script in parts is really poor.
    2. This will be controversial but some actors performances are a bit underwhelming. Mainly Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill. I just feel like they could have gone further, seems (after repeat viewings) that for most of the film they are in second gear.
    3. Canto Bight, nice idea but totally unnecessary and doesn't fit with the pace or feel of the story. Needless plot device.
    4. Rose and Codebreaker. If not for Canto Bight theyd serve no purpose and add nothing to the narrative.
    5. My biggest issue is that it feels like it should be the final film of the trilogy rather than the middle. It answers more questions than it asks and leaves little to explore in the finale. Which I'm guessing is why JJ felt he needed to bring Palpatine back.

I love rian Johnson. I was so very excited that he was doing ep8. I expected a true tour de force. I expected him to subvert expectations. Boy did he! I was hyper critical of the prequels when they were released. Leaving the theatre after phantom menace, i may have not been pleased, but, much to its credit, i left with that feeling of wonder i had felt at the end of every Star wars film prior. The feelings i felt after last jedi where so unexpected for me- I found myself ruminating, a bit melancholy. Not how I expected to leave a SW film. It was jarring.

Dislikes- most of my dislikes I still see merrit in and some I expect will see payoff in rise of skywalker.

    1. Luke's arch/disposition. I expected Luke to be older and wiser- different than he was as a young man. I did not want to see him as a disillusioned old man. He, i hoped would be the one spark of hope in the galaxy to light a fire. It was really sad to see him this way. I did not like that his choices led to kylo's fall.

    2. Rose Tico. This character really really bothered me. She offered the weakest plot line. I felt like I was watching a young woman from a fan convention walking into the GFFA. She stood out, not in a good way. I felt almost all of her dialogue was overwrought. "We don't fight the things we hate, we fight to save the things we love" was one of 2 actual cringe moments for me. Felt like "I hate sand" all over again... The time spent developing this character would have been better spent on established characters. Worse- i just dont see her being central to ep9's story, so why is she there? I also wasn't fond of her acting. I'm happy other fans enjoy her. I hope ep9 makes me come around.

    3. Leia poppins. Leia finally using the force? Great!!! Execution ? Bungled. The other moment I cringed. Took me out of the film for a bit.

    4. Snoke killed without back story giving him context and significance.

    5. Not nearly enough rey/Finn/poe interaction.

    6. Phasma. Could have been a cool antagonist. Wasted. If they were going to just off her, she may as well have died in starkiller.

    7. Canto bite subplot had its moments for sure, but it ran long and felt inconsequential. Will Justin theroux's character ever really become a character? The space horses were flawed...etc

    8. General lack of c3p0 and r2d2

    9. The time span. I wish this film took place over the course of more than a day or so. If canto bite were removed for example, other FO and Luke/Rey plots could have developed and pushed us a bit further from the events of ep7 leading to more character development.

    10. Strong implications of kylo/rey romance and Kyle redemption. I'm a never-kylo guy. You kill Han solo and you're dead to me.

    Likes-

1.direction. Even when I didnt love where the story went, i loved how it went there. Johnson made a great film.

    2. Technical aspects- sound, cinematography, sfx, etc. Star Wars never looked or sounded better.

    3. Mark hammil. Even when I didn't like where Luke was, hammil put in a career best performance.

    4. Acting in general, everybody with one exception was great.

    5. Yoda. Pretty great.

    6. Creatures and world building. Mostly spectacular. Porgs!!

    7. DJ and holdo. Dj as the subverted lando and Holdo's heroic sacrifice. Great.

8.Strong character moments for main cast, except maybe finn.

    9. Throne fight

    10. Luke's Zen master meets gunslinger/samurai sacrifice. That's not how i expected luke to go but it was epic and resonated emotionally. It brought echoes of Luke's serenity when he surrendered to Vader on vendor, knowing the righteousness of his cause would prevail. He was one with the force again and above Petty concerns. He was like again. Older, wiser, and more powerful than you can imagine.

Not sure I saw this when it first came out, but I like this approach to criticism- finding something positive and something to critique is a great way to make sure you have some nuance to your opinions.

    1. The Throne Room Fight- I know it has some funky choreography, but I literally do not care. It's awesome, and I see no reason to seek out flaws with it.

    2. The Cinematography- From Snoke's ship being torn asunder to the beautiful shots on Crait, the cinematography is the finest Star Wars has ever seen.

    3. Luke- His arc is truly great in this movie. I get he's not the action hero people wanted/expected, but I think he's all the better for it.

    4. The Yoda Scene- What a treat it was to see the green guy again. As always I'm happy to look past the flaws of this scene to bask in its greater glory

    5. Kylo Ren- Driver's performance was fantastic, and Kylo had some of the best scenes in the movie

    6. The Music- I know TLJ gets some flack for its music, and I get that it reuses a lot of old themes... but it does it effectively. Stuff like The Spark shows how well these old motifs can be rearranged for great emotional payoff.

    7. "No One's Ever Truly Gone"- This scene, man. Gets me every time. I don't know if it was edited after Carrie's death to be even more impactful somehow, but it just hits me so hard.

    8. Sense of Impending Doom- One thing I see the film getting little praise for is the sense that the walls are constantly closing in. I know people like to joke about the "chase" scene, but I think that completely misses the point. They're "tied to the end of a string". There is no escape, and running is only going to work for so long. There's a sense of hopelessness that pervades a lot of this movie, and that's definitely not typical for the usually hopeful Star Wars- but in this case, there is still hope if you know where to look. Rey's out there finding Luke. Finn and Rose are looking for the Master Codebreaker. And of course, Holdo, who kept hope to herself- perhaps a mistake, perhaps not, but regardless it does send the message that sometimes there is hope even if you cannot see it.

    9. Resistance Bomber- I dunno, sounds silly, but I really like this ship design. Same for the TIE Silencer.

    10. Sets- From Ach-To to the burning Throne Room to the admittedly impressive Canto Bight, the sets on this film are really well designed.

    1. No Time Skip- Still feels like we barely know these characters, and they barely know each other. The ST has suffered from this pretty heavily.

    2. Funky Sense of Scale- From D'Qar to Crait, each battle feels off. Our main characters always feel like they're at the center of the action, rather than simply a part of it. I guess the best example would be to compare the Battle of Hoth to just the ground section of Endor (where we almost never see the other Rebel troopers present). I get that our leads should feel important, but this just makes everything feel smaller in a bad way.

    3. The Fathiers- They just didn't do anything for me. I dunno, I get what their inclusion was supposed to accomplish, and it's not like they ruined the movie for me, but I definitely could've done without them.

    4. Broom Boy- Again, I get what his point in the movie was, and in its own way that's kinda cool. But this is Star Wars we're talking about. I would've preferred that last scene to feature some hint as to where our characters were going, since they're the ones I care about.

    5. No Knights of Ren- Not even a mention of them! I would've sufficed for simply another discussion regarding them, building the mystery around them for a reveal in EPIX. But nope, they're just totally dropped in this film.

    6. DJ- Eh, he just seemed kinda pointless and poorly thought out. His scenes just have this weird fever dream quality to them, to me, where he doesn't even feel like he's a character. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but oh well.

    7. Canto Bight Aliens- So many aliens, and almost all of them are forgettable. Also, with so many of them gathered, you'd think we'd see a couple of the classic species.

    8. Under the Island- This scene somehow managed to be more confusing than Yoda's cave... and I know that Rey being "no one" is thematically important, but the combination of it also kind of being deflating and all of the smug responses from people who always wanted that to be the case have really turned me off to this scene.

    9. The Humor- I'm not one of those people who would write this movie off because of it, but I'd say that at times the humor could be a little jarring or cringey. This is hardly the first Star Wars movie with this problem, though.

10 Finn/Poe Misused- Yanking Poe from a cockpit for most of the film was just frustrating. Finn just felt so sidelined, and he was even denied an epic duel with Phasma, in favor of whatever that was.
