Watching TLJ for the ump-teenth time on Netflix. Got to thinking, there are some interesting lines and concepts that seem like throw always, but are likely very intentional and significant to Episode IX (and maybe beyond):

    1. Noticed Luke was wearing white/light robes when Rey first approached him. Then, in his next scene, Luke is folding the white robes/putting them away, and wears darker garb throughout.

    2. Rey was very explicit that Luke had cut himself off from the Force.

    3. Snoke is very explicit with Kylo that a Rabid Cur, properly manipulated, can be a sharp tool. Rey has been that Rapid Cur to Kylo. Kylo, seeing Rey’s mind, knows exactly the best way to manipulate Rey and it relates to her parents and desire for belonging....

    Also...

    4. Luke says: Do you think I came to the most unfindable place in the galaxy for no reason at all... ?

For 1. 2. and 4., I think we don’t know the full story.

Nor do we know the full story for 3. But we do know that Kylo is likely manipulating Rey’s greatest weakness (her longing for belonging) in an effort to get her to join him.

    Bonus:

    5. Leia says: They’ve tracked us through Light Speed.... Finn replies: THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE.

What if it is, impossible? Then how was the Resistance tied on the end of a string?

Answer: FN2187. Finn. Stormtroopers can be tracked ....

He was wearing white robes first because he wanted to burn the Jedi tree and end the Jedi once and for all, but Rey interfered. So he went back to his casual clothing.

I think he was more talking about manipulating Kylo to get Rey and Skywalker. But it could also be a tease of Hux being a threat if you want him to be.

... to die. First he wanted to find answeres. Solutions. But in the end he went there to die.

I don't think he was manipulating her intentionally.

Rose gave us the reason why and how it is possible though...

You watched TLJ for who knows how many times and THAT's what you concluded? You think Rey is to Kylo what Hux was to Snoke? Watch the movie 10 more times. And by the way, when Snoke said that to Kylo he was talking about Hux AND Kylo. He was mocking him to his face, assuming he was too dumb and brainwashed to see it. Of course, he was wrong. And his arrogance (and hilarious stupidity) was his downfall. Do you see it clearer now?

    why be personal?
is there something wrong with just replying with 'i disagree'. ?

This is one of the things that justify Luke's hermitage, so it's linked to TFA and not IX or anything beyond. Luke must have been cut off from the Force, so that there was a story reason for him not sensing Leia and others suffering somewhere in the galaxy.

If Luke isn't that stupid, he should know that Kylo and his former students didn't betray him to go camping and considering what he saw before trying to harm Ben Solo, he should be very aware of what is happening in the galaxy.

It can't be a surprise for him.

But even when he supposely knew, he just didn't care.

The reasons for his exile are obviously different than not knowing what's happening in the galaxy, but cutting off from the Force is essentially him plugging his ears so that he wasn't tempted to go the way he was in TESB.

We actually don't really know why Luke wanted to kill himself even if a jedi knows that there is no death, there is just the Force.

And I'm pretty sure we will never know.

Well good thoughts, but I will only speak of the last one about Light speed and Finn. I remember thinking about that very thing and figured also that that's why they were a step ahead of Finn and Rose. Meaning being set-up.

Don't worry, there's a "rude" rating now, the shame will teach me to behave.

It's time many things stopped. Like (for example) the tendency to ignore canon in favor of one's personal preferences. Cherry picking whatever fits one's pre-set narrative and claiming THAT as fact. It would be great if that stopped. But it doesn't, does it? Or are you asking me to be the bigger person and just ignore that? Nope, I can't do that all the time, sometimes you get what you give. And it's not like we're getting in knife fights over here, so no one will be traumatized, don't worry.

Probably just an easy way to explain why Yoda didn’t offer any of his sage advice before that point.
Meaning he wasn’t there waiting around for someone to come find him. This was his hiding place and wanted to be left alone.
If Finn is what was being tracked then they’d still be tracking him on the Falcon at the end too. Right?

@Dawn my post to you yesterday was me being fed up with half the forum posting world at the moment.. not you directly, and i apologize if it came across badly.
I actually love reading your posts around the Cantina, but i do have an issue with personal posts and i was at your post when i hit an 'ahhhh!' moment.
on another day you will hear me moaning (i moan a lot :D) about the negative ratings system on this site. I have been here nearly 4 years and i have never given a neutral or negative rating to a post. i pretty much 'like' it or move on.

despite the fact that i had issue with the personal tone of your post, i don't like that you were given 'rude' ratings.. and would ask anyone that gave one and sees this to consider removing it. there's enough negativity in the world peeps.

when it comes to the Cantina @Dawn i want the fairy tale. when people write out posts on the forum...

i want them to consider the member they may be replying to
i want them to consider all members that may come along in the minutes/days/weeks/years to come and read their post
i want them to remember that they are representing the Cantina
i want them to remember that they are representing the fan base

anyone can disagree with anything they want to disagree with on this forum or anywhere else.. but there's always a way to do it without being personal.

you are absolutely right @Dawn - whatever anyone writes.. nobody should get traumatized, but that doesn't mean that i can't fight for the Cantina to be a more respectful and more positive place than it is right now.

these are just my opinions.. a glimpse inside my messed up head lol. i'm not right about this stuff.. nobody is right or wrong.. there is only opinion and i hope i haven't offended you :)

It just occurred to me that if Luke cut himself off from the Force, perhaps that would make him truly go if he died like this and he would never become a Force ghost/he wouldn't go to Jedi heaven. If that's the case, the whole idea of him turning the Force off has become more powerful in my eyes.

I think in TLJ visual dictionary it confirms the light garbs as ceremonial robes. I think that's what led to the theory that Luke had dressed up like that and was standing on the edge of cliff because he was about to jump and commit suicide. :(

Don't apologize, it didn't bother me At ALL.

Oh, negative ratings don't bother me, that's what I meant in that part of my post, it was sarcasm. My main point was...there's a reason why I'm sometimes rude.

Of course, there's always a way. But I'm no Jedi.

Of course it doesn't mean that, you do you.

Offended? I'm rude and condescending, I don't even have the right to claim offense. No, this is not sarcasm, I mean it. If you dish it out, you have to be able to take it. In other words no, I'm never offended here, especially not by someone who is as polite as you are.

There may be more to it, but what I got from that is that Luke is parallel to Kylo in the desire to destroy the past. Luke folding his traditional Jedi robes signifies him folding up the past and putting it away. He changes to the darker garb to show that relation with the mindset of Kylo. So on the poster, they have both Luke and Kylo's faces in a symmetric with Rey holding the lightsaber between the two halves of the face. So Luke is, cutting himself off from the past, wanting to kill it, let it die, with him.

Luke dwells on the failure he sees in the past (both his own failure with Ben, and the failure of the Jedi to thwart Sidious) and that's why he wants to end himself, and by extension the Jedi. But Yoda shows him that failure is a great teacher. You don't want to destroy the past, you want to learn from it, grow from it, beyond it, so he says, we are what they grow beyond. This is when Luke reconnects with the past, and in the end scenes he's wearing the Jedi robes again, and he's using the force in its purest form for defense only. He's at the height of what it is to be a Jedi at this point.

Luke said, "See you around, kid" and that to me feels like Han talking. It's a way of saying, you can't kill the past, just like Kylo couldn't really kill Han. "See you around, kid" is like the past is talking to Kylo and that line is being spoken by that which symbolizes the past itself. Meaning that Kylo wants to kill the past but the past is replying "See you around." Can't get rid of it.

Kylo doesn't yet appear to understand the necessity of the past, but Rey is still connected with the past, especially in her search for answers provided by the past (for example, her parents). So I feel that Luke's changing of his clothes is an outward reflection of what is going on inside of him and how that changes along the narrative. Disconnection to reconnection.

I think that's the idea of it. To become one with the force, you have to not only be a Jedi, but use a certain connectivity to the force in order to do it. Yoda said something like that to Kenobi at the end of RotS, that Qui-Gon was the first Jedi to learn how to do that, and Yoda said he would teach Kenobi how to communicate with Qui-Gon so Kenobi could do the same. So if Luke cut himself off from the force, and died, he wouldn't be able to return from the netherworld as a force ghost. That though leaves the question of, how did Anakin return as a force ghost unless he also had some kind of knowledge of how it was done.

My theory: Even though it was the dark side, he managed to maintain "a" connection with the Force, so perhaps this made it easier. ;) Luke wouldn't have that lifeline if he didn't reconnect.

He definitely had a connection, I would even propose a reconnect similar to Luke's in TLJ since he turned from the dark side prior to his death. Vader was somewhat along the same parallel of destroying his own past, thus the "That name no longer has any meaning to me" about the name Anakin Skywalker. But Luke was able to get him to accept that past "A name you've only forgotten" (or something like that).

On the concept of Luke cutting himself off from the Force, I thought it was interesting how explicit Rey was in mentioning it.

I've never been comfortable with the simple explanation that Luke has ran away from the fight to die.... Disgruntled and frustrated with the Ben Solo turn of events--sure, that's fine--but Luke running off to die seems a bit too much for the old (younger) Luke we knew from the OT.

So this leads me to think there is more to why Luke cut himself off from the Force:

I recall rumors back before TFA that Snoke/First Order had some ability or means to detect or track people strong in the Force.

If Luke was the Last Jedi and if Snoke/First Order/Knights of Ren were tracking him via the Force, it could make sense for Luke to run off to Unknown Regions to look for the First Jedi Temple and to cut himself off from the Force so nobody could follow him there.

Luke was running to protect his friends from Snoke/First Order. He was running to find a way to defeat Snoke, to learn more about the Jedi, to become more powerful to overcome Snoke, etc....

Unfortunately for Luke, his Force-less self crash landed his X-wing near the island and he's been stranded there for a number of years. The Jedi texts haven't given him any insight on how to defeat Snoke (or any other answers that might be helpful), so Luke turns into a grumpy, stranded recluse, becoming more frustrated each day.

While being stranded, Luke understandably becomes depressed about his inability to help. He eventually convinces himself he should have never taught Ben the ways of the Force. Luke is mad at the whole Jedi religion for not providing him with a way out of his predicament. By the time Rey shows up, Luke is ready to end the entire history of the Jedi. Only after they interact for a few days does he start to lighten up. Then, he reconnects with the Force (we see him brace his fall with the Force when Rey spars with him). And guess what--Luke is reconnected with the Force (does his Force-projection trick) only after Snoke has died (no more tracking perhaps?).... Interesting timing.

Blast away at my head cannon!
