hahahahaha ~ dang, i didn't delete that fast enough, did i? ah well.

it's a little like going back to the womb, right? it's a dark place, she wants to see her parents, her origins.
she emerges new and changed by the experience. you can stretch the metaphor all sorts of ways.

And suddenly, I'm reminded of my Joseph Campbell, Pathways to Bliss:

"Marsupial babies grow in a second womb, a womb with a view. We need mythology as the marsupial needs the pouch to develop beyond the stage of the incompetent infant to a stage where it can step out of the pouch and say 'Me, voilĂ : I'm it."

When C-3PO sees Luke, after Leia talks to him, all he can muster is a "Master Luke........"

Is this the first time Threepio has ever been speechless?

It was a great reunion. As C-3P0 said "Master Luke", it gave me flashbacks of A New Hope where it all started.

About C-3P0, I think one of the little moments that touched my heart is when Chewbacca hugged C-3P0 at the end when everyone was on the Falcon. Man, they have been through a lot together and had ups and downs, but that was truly something special. :)

The way Rose goes from sniffly fangirl to badass in 0.2 seconds.

The look Finn and Rose share when Maz insinuates she got frisky with the Codebreaker.

Everything fish nuns (I will always call Caretakers fish nuns :D )

The moment Falcon appears on Crait and only its shadow is visible.

I adore Caretakers! Can't wait to see the deleted scene with the Visitors. There's something deeply fascinating about their culture and I genuinely hope we come back at some point on Ahch-To and learn more about their culture and relation with Jedi.

    Also, here's a Caretaker with a broom.

There are so many subtle cues that Luke doesn't WANT to be on Ach-To but you can get the feeling that he thinks he belongs there.
The change in voice when Chewie shows up, when he sees R2....these aren't the reactions of someone who necessarily feels like he WANTS to be there but rather feels like he HAS to be there out of duty, whether misguided or not.

everytime i see the movie, that shot is amazing on the big screen:
like a classic film star from the 40s or something: just mysterious and seductive and beautiful and powerful.
love it so much and i love Johnson for giving it to us; for Carrie.

also, the fish nuns are one of my favorite things too. we need toys and storybooks of them! i would buy them all. : D

New topic: Can Rian Johnson be trusted with a trilogy when he clearly has a broom fetish?!?!

Finn did refer to mopping the star destroyers, though. could it be any long-handled cleaning implement?

If you haven't yet, check out a lot of Kurosawa's films and see where Johnson got a lot of his ideas for shots like that one.
And especially the battle on Crait

There is a lot of Kurosawa in TLJ: Rashomon (obviously) and Hidden Fortress in Kylo vs. Luke (mainly in framing). And a lot of others old timey-wimey stuff (meaning from old movies, not time travel). :D

Absolutely. And it's great. I think it's the most "Original Trilogy" Star Wars since the OT because he leans so hard into those influence.

My favorite Kurosawa. Masterpiece. I think for the duel of Rey and Kylo x The pretorians, RJ took the slowmotion scenes from The 7 Samurais as an inspiration. Pretty well done.

    PS. Ran, my favorite Kurosawa.

I have recently revisited it and many other Kurosawa's movies including some I haven't seen before for my job (re-translating for new rights holders here) and Ran is spectacular, though Hidden Fortress still holds a special place in my heart. Eh, I went through my Japanese wave 10-15 years ago (I mean, my username says it all) and I can revisit Kurosawa at any time.
