TLJ Little Details

The way Rey's face was lit when she talked to Snoke. BB-9E emitting beeps that closely resemble sound effects from WALL·E, the spaceship-iron visual gag - there are many things to enlist.

 

given the bickering dueling orders between Ben and Hux later on, the FO's got waaaay worse problems ahead then ~ hahahahaha.

 

I actually like that the FO plays out more like a gang of thugs / fascists rather than an imperial, finely tuned machine.
I hope they double down on that with IX.

 

I love cool details! Random order:

- Kylo saying that it would kill Rey if it was her who was doing the Force-projecting/communication thing. I noticed that during my second viewing and went: "Oooh..."
- Rey calling Kylo "Ben!" during the fight.
- Luke Force-supporting himself when knocked down by Rey.
- Kylo's new lightsaber stance (blade pointing forward).
- Kylo losing it and springing up in anger (right before getting shocked by Snoke).
- The cut from Snoke's rant to Kylo's face in the elevator - very effective editing. You can see he's replaying that conversation in his mind and it makes him embarrassed and furious as hell.
- "Prepare my ship!" and - by extension - all TIE Silencer stuff.
- Ben's lightsaber hilt in the flashback.
- That vintage Hollywood-esque cue when we see the Master Codebreaker.
- That hilarious "Risky Business" slide by Kylo.
- Spot-on representations of warmth, cold, life, death, peace and violence on the island.
- "The Finn."
- The Emperor's theme when Snoke messes with Rey - perhaps a bit too on the nose, but I still like the callback.
- The shot of Kylo's lighsaber spinning at his feet.
- R2 playing Leia's message. It got me.
- C-3PO looking like some kind of creepy ghost in the background (because of the lighting). I think it was right before Luke walked in on Crait.
- Kylo yelling at the Falcon.
- It's hard to call it a detail, but some of the shots of Kylo and Luke facing each other were amazing. Reminded me of samurai films.
- Luke hovering (the Force-projection reveal).
- The opening zoom.

I'm sure there's much more, I'll update my list when more stuff comes to my mind.

 

this might be my favorite thing in the whole movie.
it's hilariously wonderful.
and then the way he sort of retracts his hand and feels silly when he realizes it's a projection.
i love that you always see that he's puzzling things through in every moment. like making sense of the world is so much work for him.

 

I think it's funny how Rey is all about expressing her emotions in the moment and Ben is all analytical: "Hmm, how does this work?"

 

I can't wait when I get that Blu-Ray because there's still so much in this film that I need to process properly.

 

awww, she just leaps into everything on faith and he trusts absolutely nothing.

 

Speaking of Rey, anther little moment that I love is after the fight in the throne room, when Rey and Kylo talk. Rey says "Please, Ben, don't do that. Don't go that way." and there's moething incredibly genuine in the way Daisy delivers that line.

 

awwww man, it's so heartbreaking: she's so excited after the fight is over. and she's all: "there's still time to save the fleet! yay! hey! Ben!"
and then it dawns on her that it's all going south. ughhhhh. why can't they just work it out??? : o (

 

I agree. I think most of us saw that coming, knowing Kylo... yet Rey is so innocent, that she really believed Kylo was just gonna turn down ruling the First Order

 

okay, i went back and watched it again and i have to say one last thing about this.
Hux does give the order to fire on Poe right after Poe makes the crack about his mother.
that's even before he makes the beeline for the dreadnaught.

so again: where is the breakdown? i'm more inclined to believe that the FO is just generally dysfunctional.
the older officers don't respect the whippersnappers like Hux, and so of course the chain of command is a mess.

 

Oh yes, that was a fantastic scene. It was shot and cut really well. The slow motion even worked. Seeing those 2 face off was great.

 

I liked Luke's line about how the Jedi let Darth Sidious rise to power.

Not only is it true, but it's a PT reference!

And many thought Disney was ignoring the PT forever. Lol.

 

This is probably my favorite part of the film:

1. Rey and Kylo discussing their "opposing" visions of the future, each thinking the other would change sides b/c they saw themselves fighting side by side
2. The actual side-by-side battle (and them inwardly thinking their version of the vision was coming true)
3. The realization that nothing really changed between them.

It's a hard spoiler, no wonder there are no official images of it. And sneaky snaphots from cinema suck - I'd rather not even look at those and keep everything fresh until I see it in proper quality. But yeah, I can't wait to take a closer look at those shots as well. Gotta wait for the Blu-ray and hope for 4K!
