One thing is for certain, Disney is doing a decent job keeping things under wraps. I mean, I remember all the leaked descriptions for the PT teaser/trailers... I should say, I liked the leaks and am disappointed there hasn't been more!

I remember alllllll of the leaks and info that came out in 1998 about The Phantom Menace during the Internet's infancy, and I for one felt I had things spoiled for me when I went into the theater.

I'm on the fence with regard to spoilers and leaks. I suppose with merchandise and teasers/trailers it isn't a problem since I'm going to see that stuff sooner or later.

I'm sitting here thinking why do the studio not inform us about the release date for the trailers untill a couple of days or so before it is released ?? The studio wouldn't loose a thing by informing us about it..

Not knowing has its advantages. I had no idea when the first Rogue One teaser was coming and when they announced it's "TOMORROW" I got hyped beyond limits. If I knew weeks in advance, that period would feel twice as long and painful... ;)

As for studio not losing anything - well, by not informing us when to expect stuff they kind of keep the buzz alive. If they said "come back October 16" some people could tune out.

I remember when Star Wars was just the name of one single film and the others had different names. I ain't changing from that policy, because later films are all inferior in comparison to the original.

Announcing the release date of a trailer a day or so in advance bugs me. Announcing a trailer release with a few trailer teasers bugs the ever living @#$% out of me. They did that with TFA, and it felt like SUCH a JJ move, though I know marketing isn't run by a director, only influenced.

RJ said in April that he couldn't wait to show us the film over the next 8 months..... Well, he could wait after all. KK and/or that ponce head of marketing at Disney has locked him in his room, or RJ doesn't want to show anything until it's too late.

They waited until late October to release a trailer for TFA, releasing a poster with it, all right before tickets went on sale. I think they knew that before and after reshoots they had way too much ANH in TFA and they wanted to scoop up ticket buys using the trailer excitement, but before people really looked at the trailer and poster and got nervous about the remake factor. The didn't show MVS character, the inside of Maz's watering hole, the trench run, almost anything inside Starkiller, and much of the other ANH rip offs that the film included.

Yes, RJ has said he's not making a remake of ESB, but a huge amount of confirmed information refutes the "not a ESB remake or homage" line.
"original" feels like the "practical effects" of TLJ. If the teaser hadn't been a remake of the TFA one and been so chock full of ESB homages, or more footage had been released at this point, they would have more trust from me. I mean, objectively, we have more evidence pointing to TLJ being less original (or more derivative) than TFA seemed in August 2015.

They released one of the most boring, disappointing, and unoriginal teaser or trailer in movie history. It looked beautiful, but I saw tons of fanmade trailers in the winter that had essentially all of those shots and more, plus original touches.

I want TLJ to be good, but my confidence is flagging. I know they want to sell toys and lunch boxes, thus making money from marketing rather than producing two trailers for July/August and October that will cost money to make and then run as skipable ads on Youtube or trimmed to run as 1 minute ad on TV.

I don't understand why LFL refuses to promote this motion picture with moving pictures. The last time they followed this idiotic, pompous strategy, we got an homage (at best) or a straight up shameless remake (at worst).

I'm concerned they're afraid of a weird, unoriginal, and/or just bad film.

Thor's had a teaser and a trailer, Blade Runner II has had one teaser and three trailers, IT has had about four total, GOTG had one teaser and at least two full trailers. Justice League has had two or three trailers and a teaser.

The only tent pole film I can recall that didn't have a teaser and full trailer within four months of release that I can remember is TFA, and it really had two teasers. RO had two long teasers or one and one by end of August. Yes TLJ is anticipated, but they have shown like 60 seconds worth of footage, 30 of which were money shots of the water & the boring parts of the island (including Rey training & the back of Rey staring AT WATER).

Force Friday II (the search for more money) is in 10 days. I strongly doubt we get one before that or within 10 days of FF2.

That would put us three months out without anything except the name, a terrible teaser full of padding, one of those BTS vanity exercises, and a few screen shots & posed pictures. They have something to hide, and when a studio is hiding a film, it rarely is because the movie is really good. Sometimes, but rarely.

(Also, please don't respond with just "I don't want to be spoiled! I like not knowing!" We're going to be carpet bombed with TV ads from Thanksgiving to NYE. And most of the people here come and read spoilers. How much people want to know is their choice. And if a trailer is released tomorrow, you might choose to ignore it to avoid being spoiled about.....Rey being trained or Poe flying something? I'm pointing out that this "strategy" is very suspicious (not to mention dishonest and insulting, but that's sort of been the LFL motto since the Early Bird Specials. And part of the problem is lots of people like not knowing, and some people can handle 120 seconds of footage being shown to them. Neither group is really getting a good deal from LFL. A lack of footage and legit news drives these leaks because nature abhors a vacuum. And the toy leaks are "spoiling" the movie for people who are fine discussing the movie but don't want to "know" very much).

I swear I'm not trolling. I want TLJ to be excellent, very much had hopes for it for a long time, and still think it's much more likely to be very good than not. But we have no feel for this movie. We know some sets and costumes and characters, but in terms of style cinematography, plot, and action (and new music), all we have is a teaser from over four months ago that might be the weakest trailer LFL has done in the post-ROTJ era.

Politics in the US are sucking the air out of every other topic here to some degree. The NFL is about to restart, as well CFB in August, NBA and NHL in October. IT, BR2, Thor3, and JUSTICE LEAGUE are all being released within the same 8 weeks, starting in a few weeks. Plus you've got Labor Day, back to school, Yom Kippur, Halloween, and Thanksgiving crunched into the same 12 weeks. Avengers 3 & Black Panther will release trailers before Thor 3 is released, and TLJ has to give them a wide berth

I know trailers only last a few minutes but marketing a movie that needs to make as much as TLJ does takes repetition. I'm starting to think LFL will just throw table scraps to the diehards and release the trailer around Halloween....

    I have similar thoughts.

But at least we're not getting the bait-and-switch advertising of TFA that I've come to hate with a passion.

Seriously, $&@%% those guys that did that.

I'd rather have only few things revealed in advertising, than that blatant misdirection at the cost of certain characters.

I certainly feel like this to an extent. I definitely wonder what the holdup is with them releasing another trailer of some sort, be it a teaser or a full trailer. It seemed like after the EW story and the pictures that were in it that a trailer would have been evident. Several of the pictures looked like screenshots of footage so I thought that we must be getting close.

As I said in another post, they seemed to be following the templates of the last two movies when it came to the marketing and release schedule with the trailers. This time it feels like they're purposing withholding footage and I'm curious what the reason is. The one trailer that came out definitely could be viewed as being ESB-like if you looked at it that way. You have a jedi master in a remote location training a young new hero, a ground battle against walkers on a planet with an almost white looking surface, the Falcon evading tie fighters through the clouds, and the First Order seemingly penetrating the Resistance's location. That's a lot of similarities to ESB so I can see how people would be worried that they're following a template rather than making something completely original. I personally really enjoyed TFA and was willing to look past the obvious similarities to the original trilogy movies since it felt like once they got that out of the way then they could start telling more original stories. I'm hopeful for TLJ but the absence of at least a little bit of footage at this point I'm starting to get a little bit worried.

To me, the reason there are so few pictures is precisely.... this kind of thread.
SW is definitely one-of-a-kind. There is nothing equal, there has never been something equal, and I'm convinced there will never be something equal, in the whole history of movie industry.
This saga lasts for 40 years. Nothing compares to it. It has the biggest fandom in the world which contains the most nitpicking fans of the whole Creation. When Episode 1 came out, there were billions fans who ran into the theaters to watch it, once, twice, sometimes ten times. Some of them violently spat at George's face, but three years after, everybody came back to see Episode 2. Billions of new spits, hatred over the web. Years after when Episode 3 came out, they always were billions again who ran into the theaters.
They have rebooted the story once. It worked.
They rebooted the story twice. It worked.
They gave us new versions of the original movies. We accepted them (with less or more difficulties...)
They sold it, and the new owners made a third reboot. The new books relting the new story sell very well.
We got a new trilogy. We got spinoffs (something new in the movie industry).
And more and more fans daily join the fandom.
SW has been everywhere: in other movies, in ads, in street language. Everybody knows Star Wars even if everybody do not like it. Everybody know that sentence of ESB. Everybody knows who is Yoda... is there someone who knows who is Rockatansky ? (answer: the name of the hero of Mad Max, 1979, a franchise that has lasted almost as long as SW, and counts 4 movies iirc).

40 years of admiration, love, fanatism - or conversely unconcern, or simply barely interest, all over the world. Star Wars is definitely something apart in the movie
industry. I mean : classical rules cannot apply to it.
They DO NOT need to make advertisement : just a single Pablo Hidalgo tweet, and the whole world knows it in hours, and dozens of websites or movie papers will freely relay the news.
They DO NOT need to make trailers, because anyway, everybody will run into theaters. Yes. Even you, @Lobot, even you @Lars Skywalker, and also you @BornIn77 :) (and yes! me too!) you WILL go to see episode 8 because... because it just cannot be otherway... seriously, can you imagine you still have your account on the Cantina, and you say to us "uh uh Cantina partners, we are today March, the 15th of 2018 and I still haven't seen Episode 8, hehehe"... no :) It is simply... not possible. You WILL go to see the movie, because it's Star Wars, it is neither Marvel nor Mad Max.
Hey, I absolutely do not want to offense you, ok. :) I just want to say: we are slave of this franchise. We are slave since 40 years (for the oldest ones of us), we are slave since the first day we confessed "oh that movie is damn cool", we were enslaved the day one brought us our first Yoda or Vader figurine.
WE are slaves and THEY perfectly know this.

    Star Wars is definitely one-of-a-kind.
We say "I do not care a trailer"... but if a trailer comes tomorrow on Youtube it will get 1 billion views before the end of the day. Yes, including mine. :)
We say "i won't go to the theater because TLJ is ESB 2.0"... but we all will go. Perhaps not in december the 15th... but before the end of January, for sure.
We say "Han solo movie sucks"... but when TLJ will be onscreen, we all will turn our speculations to this next chapter because...

    ... because it's Star Wars. :D :D :D

If they waited this long might as well be the first MNF sept. 11th just after all the toys are out.

I'll play devil's advocate with you as the PT teaser/trailers were all incredibly great. So how did those movies turn out? I can't tell you how many great trailers I have seen for movies/TV shows and then they never live up in the end.

I think the reason Disney is holding back more for TLJ then TFA is because they can. TFA had to get many old school fans back after the PT, so they had to keep feeding the fans something new every few months. I was skeptical about the ST after the PT, as they needed to get me and many of my friends on board with their marketing. They don't need to do that with TLJ because most of the fans are on board after the success of TFA. Now I get that there are a section of the fanbase that thought it was unoriginal and didn't like it, but it's a small minority compared to the fans that liked it.

While I would love to get a 2nd Trailer ASAP, I'm cool waiting til September/October. I think the standalone movies have helped me be more patient because we don't have to wait 3 years between movies anymore. We got TFA in 2015, and Rogue 1 in 2016, and now were right back with TLJ this year. In the old days, we would have this lull between movies and the anticipation would build and build.
