TLJ; Should it have been filmed in the same style as TFA?

Should Lucasfilm been more strict with Rian in the making of TLJ?

Not story wise... as I personally loved Rian's story. TLJ was shocking and refreshing, but the feel and style of Rian's movie is jarringly different from TFA. So much so, that it took me out of the movie a couple times. Rian's movie, in Star Wars terms, is truly outside the box when it comes to camera angles, flash back sequences, dialogue, ect.

Would fans who dislike TLJ, have been more warm to it, if it had the same feel and style of TFA? While ESB is a decisively different movie then ANH, it's overall style and feel was still very similar to ANH.

For the record, I rank TLJ as my 4th favorite, behind ESB, ANH & TFA.

The Original Trilogy films are all different in style from each other.

God no, I hope they don't put any visual restrictions on these movies. If SW did that we'd have never gotten Empire. Each subsequent movie builds on the visual style. Adds more possibilities and becomes ingrained in the broader franchise. This movie had aspects of the OT, the PT, TFA, and added some of its own.Future movies will build on aspects of TLJ, all that came before, and hopefully add something new as well.

I would disagree. While they are very different movies from each other, the overall look of the films, the camera work, editing, ect is very similar in the OT.

Again, I am not 'advocating' that they should have made it in the same style as TFA, I am more interested if it would have made a difference in peoples opinion of the movie, if they had of.

The Last Jedi is one of the most beautifully shot Star Wars film. I hope Lucasfilm doesn't put any restrictions out.

Agreed. But do you think it would have changed peoples opinions (those who say they hated it), had it been shot in the smae style as TFA?

I applaud Rian and Steve Yedlin for going for their own thing. In my opinion directing and cinematography in TLJ is probably the best out of all SW films. It's definitely the most unique and interesting. But I feel no jarring difference in terms of filming style compared to TFA. It will be interesting to examine the differences closely after the Blu-ray comes out.

I don't think TFA-style cinematography would impact people's opinions. First of all, I don't think people complain about cinematography of TLJ and, secondly, I don't think it's something general audience (as well as the majority of fans) pays a lot of attention to.

I have no problem with different styles, in fact I welcome it. Some of my favorite moments was RJ's touch with the Rey/Mirror scene and Rey/Ren conversations through the force. My beef with the movie is RJ was all over the place with too many characters, too many storylines, too long of a run time, and forgetting that this Trilogy is about Luke/Rey/Kylo/Snoke, as they honestly feel like bit players to the Finn/Rose substory.

Personally, how it as shot was one of the best things about this movie. Truely breathtaking at times.

Depends on what you mean. I think people that didn't like TLJ but did like TFA are drawn the the kinetic energy in the filming style. It's something JJ is brilliant with. Combining that with his Mystery Box story telling style which sets up many questions that intentionally have no answer (showing a very awesome looking KOR sequence that didn't actually mean anything is one example) meant that people didn't have the time to ask what the thematic meaning of what they were seeing was. They could ride a wave of beautiful images that showed us what we wanted to see.

But doing that would make TLJ a fundamentally different film that actively criticizes the banality of questions that do not drive the story forward and that are just there for our immediate comfort.

So yeah, I think that style of filmmaking would make those people like that movie better, but it would no longer be this movie.

It doesn't matter how the movie was filmed, because fanboys would find something complain about regardless. (epic fail)

ESB was filmed without any master shots and it drove Lucas nuts. It's definitely different in many ways

Personally I am divided. I would prefer a standardized approach to allow for a familiar format but I didn't catch the major differences though I know they are there.

George Lucas made the Force scientific. Force, scientific, in a Star Wars film! That's not Star Wars! :p

The flashback sequences actually gave it a different layer, especially that scene where Rey is at the mirror cave, we go in assuming it is present tense, but find out that she is relating to Kylo what happened in the past tense. It worked really well, because you assume she is telling it to Luke and not Kylo until you hear "you are not alone".

What about that trippy low-framerate slow motion-part in the cave on Dagobah?
