Calling Han Solo the most beloved Star Wars character ever is a bit hyperbolic to say the least. Is he loved? Sure. Is he the most loved character? Not so sure. I do agree Solo suffered from the backlash against TLJ and poor marketing. It also suffered from the fact that no one really wanted it. Would fans want a film about Vader? I think so. Yoda? Maybe. Obi-Wan? Seems they do, so I think one could make an argument Solo isn't anywhere near the "most beloved."

As for whether or not Star Wars NEEDS Skywalkers to be successful, that is up in the air. We really don't know. I personally don't think it does. I do think it needs Jedi and/or Sith or force users to be successful, but that's just my feeling. And I'd be careful about saying Rey isn't a Skywalker. We don't know who/what she is until we see TROS. I said immediately after I saw TLJ that Kylo (my ST favorite character and really the only character I enjoy from the ST) could very easily be lying about her heritage. We will find out in four months.

You are correct, it was worse than bad. A Star Wars film that made $213 million in the U.S. is an absolute disaster man. Seriously. I saw the film that Saturday and about 10 other people were in the showing with me. I was shocked. And I enjoyed the film immensely. I would have thought the film had been out for like a month. Not a day.

Personally I am excited for this film. I can't help but be optimistic about a Star Wars film. As much as I might despise The Last Jedi, I'm not going to allow it to taint my love for something I have loved since 1977.

I get what you mean. I feel like I was more excited pre-TLJ but I feel more hyped pre-TROS if that makes any sense. I also don’t have any friends who are Star Wars fans, or big fans of it anyway, but that’s kinda the role that the Cantina fills for me. I’ve interacted with many of the people on here for over two years and I have discussed all things Star Wars with them. I also have a lot of nostalgia for the fall leading up to The Last Jedi (Force Friday, ordering opening night tickets, the trailer, the red carpet live stream, etc.) amd with all of that happening again in the coming months, I’m almost as hyped for the build-up as I am for the film itself.

I’m with you on your analogy, except for the part about diving into a money bin since I won’t have anything to dive into because I’ll have spent it all on new Star Wars merch. :D

In all seriousness, this really is a great year to be a Star Wars fan. I liked Solo and the first half of Resistance season 1 last year, but the year as a whole felt like an empty one for Star Wars, especially during the holiday season. I was bummed that I didn’t have a reason to go the theaters or have any new merchandise to buy. Other than a few exceptions, there also wasn’t really any books or comics that came out last year that was too noteworthy either. Plus no Star Wars Celebration. This year has turned that all around though. It feels like Lucasfilm has upped the quality on their books and comics which had been growing stale IMO. We had Star Wars Celebration last year and going to it rejuvenated my love for Star Wars to an all-time high. This year we’re getting our first ever live-action Star Wars show (something that we’ve been waiting for for years), our first story-based game in a long time, a completely immersive land opening up at two of Disney’s theme parks and the final conclusion to this forty year saga coming out in four unbearably long months.

I think the excitement level really ramps up when that 2nd Trailer hits (probably in October during a Monday Night Football game, just like TFA and TLJ). I'm anxious to see what they show in that 2nd Trailer, because there are 2 things that could really blow people's minds (as Kevin Smith has famously said about the ending):

-Some Image of Palpatine so we can better understand his role in TROS

-Some image of Luke so we can better understand his role in TROS.

I’d be more excited if they’d let me.

The marketing strategy of super extra secrecy (remember when actors couldn’t confirm they were in TFA well into the summer?) then releasing a trailer in October then opening a firehouse of ads, articles, etc, then seeing the film to learn a lot of the marketing to be more about misleading people going into the first viewing and less about celebrating the films good parts.

The marketing and approach to the stories they are telling has lowered my anticipation and enjoyment of every DIsney SW film and SW in general.

TFA was all about making a fan film and checking boxes (and overcorrecting for PT’s flaws). TLJ, well, I hated it in so many ways, but it was gorgeous and ballsy.

I wish we could get some reassurance that this last SW film for years, the finale of our beloved saga will be something that is more creative than $200 million cinematic karaoke, but is more reverent and respectful
Of the material than a $300 million NAZI sci-fi propaganda/snuff film using SW names and almost nothing else.

I thought TLJ was gorgeous and gutsy. TFA was a lot of fun and brought so much of the good stuff back (not the hero...Luke Skywalker, but neither did TLJ)

TROS has a very interesting premise, both with there being fewer rebels alive than you need for a cricket match, and Palpatine being back.

Plus, I’m dying to see how JJ makes it look like a lot of this was his idea in the first place..he’s already said hes going to. That’s going to be an interesting challenge. I actually like a lot of his films. I hope this is one of them.

I just wish they’d show us a little more. Right. Now. And show us a little less in November.

Most often it's a fight between Solo and Vader. Sometimes Vader is ranked first, the other time Han is ranked first.

Yes, I was going to post the same. Neither is personally my most loved character, but what you say is in line with what I’ve seen too.

Whilst not the only reason, I don’t think it’s coincidence that those two characters featured in the first two spin off movies.

Han Solo appeals to the masses where Darth Vader and Luke appeal more to the hardcore fans. There is a reason that Ford was paid a reported 20 million to come back for Episode 7 (someone correct me if that number is wrong). Ford puts butts in the seats because Solo sort of relates to anyone, plus he’s the coolest guy in the galaxy.

Let's be honest. Solo is still the coolest character by far. And at the end of the day, that's what matters. Sorry to Luke and Vader. Those guys stories will always be the most compelling characters in the saga. But, for better or worse, coolness counts.

Lando is who I think of first when the word "cool" is mentioned, but really all of Star Wars is cool. (Well, maybe not jar jar.)

My level of excitement before TLJ was off the charts. I had bought several t-shirts, posters for my kids, bought tickets for THREE showings on opening weekend. After seeing it, I was in shock. I tried very hard to like it and thought maybe I needed time to digest it. The next day I got refunds for the additional 2 showings. I've never been so let down and insulted by a film so my level of excitement for TROS is at an all-time Star Wars low. If the 2nd trailer comes out and we see a Luke Skywalker in the flesh and some other teases that make up for the last film, I'll go opening weekend. Presently, I have no plans to go see it. I will wait to hear how others receive it before I put myself out there again.

The way I look at it, its just a movie. A movie from a franchise that I love but still just a movie. I don't see it has having to put myself out there. I don't but much stock in what others think. What one likes is a matter of taste and opinion. Everyone doesn't share the same. Most critics gave TLJ a good rating but obviously you don't not agree which is fair. However, the opposite is too. Why rely on what others may say in order to see it. Enjoy the time, the experience, see for yourself before relying on others opinions. At the end of the night, its our choice if its our cup of tea and whether we drink from that cup again. :)

I am just really curious to see how this thing ends. And I feel pretty confident that it will be the best of the trilogy.

I don't know a single person who is hyped to see TROS. That's not me joking either. Literally nobody I know of, in my family or friends, of any age cares about "New Star Wars" anymore. Sad, but true.

I personally don't care about what happens to any of the "new" characters Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren, etc. I care so little about these characters that I often even forget their names, especially Poe Dameron, who I have learned to associate with the little red Tellytubby Po in order to remember his name correctly.

I only feel a sense of curiousity and dread about TROS, for what eventually happens to characters R2-D2, C-3PO, the only recognisable elements of OT/PT Star Wars that I still care about anymore. I hope they aren't used cheaply and disposed of in the same way as the other legacy characters have been in this sequel trilogy.

I don't care who Rey's family are or were. I don't care about who Snoke is or was. And the galaxy under the control of a Darth Vader wannabe fanboy like Kylo Ren is laughable and not believeable.

I just don't care about TROS. I'm not even actively planning to see it (if ever) and won't buy any of the merch like I had done with the other earlier films.

I, for one, am totally amped for Episode IX. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the saga for 39 years, and I am totally excited to finally see the conclusive chapter of the Saga. I was one of the minority of fans who didn’t have a strong opinion of VIII. I neither loved nor hated it; I thought it was adequate. However, I love what Abrams has done with the franchise and can’t wait to see what he does to tie everything together. The eight-year-old in me can’t wait to finally see another Star Wars film where both Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford speak lines of dialogue. I am, however, savoring the anticipation, knowing that I’ll probably never be as excited about Star Wars ever again.

I assume you’re talking about a flashback where Han/Leia drop Ben off to Luke? I haven’t read any rumors of Ford coming back for TROS, but that would be a nice scene.
