Showtime has picked up Twin Peaks for a limited 9 episode run. All directed by Lynch himself.

It's the show that may never have been made had Lynch directed RotJ. Laura Palmer promised she'd see us again in 25 years, and that is now becoming a reality.

Who here is psyched for a return trip to the Black Lodge and who thinks this will end up being a disappointment?

Forgetting its dip in quality in the second season as Lynch lost interest, Twin Peaks was some of the most original content ever aired on broadcast TV. It was funny and horrifying all at the same time. I for one am excited.

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

Dear David Lynch - please offer some kind of closure to your series. No, it doesn't have to make sense, but don't leave us on another huge cliffhanger. Love, a fan.

I, for one, am very excited as I was on board with Twin Peaks right from the beginning. I also like Lynch's films for the most part -- Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. My all-time favorite show LOST has paid homage of sorts to TP by stating that it would not have been made had Twin Peak not broken new ground.

I kind of contest the idea that "David Lynch lost interest." That may have played a part in it but the company, ABC, wanted the mystery to be rushed.

All that said I think this will probably be disappointing. It's one of those things that existed at a specific point in time and with a specific feel and I doubt it can be recaptured especially with so much new and improved TV that has come along, IE LOST, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, GOT etc... Will audiences find Lynch's eccentric quirkiness charming and engaging anymore? Will Lynch try to "outdo" current TV or even himself? I don't know BUT I intend to find out.

I had read somewhere, and admittedly don't remember where now, that there was a rift between Frost and Lynch in the second season as Frost wanted to bow to the network and Lynch wanted to continue to go weirder. The same article had stated that some of the more rambling and useless plot threads that made up the second season post the killer reveal were Lynch simultaneously protesting the network's notes and not giving a damn about the show anymore if it didn't allow him creative freedom.

I actually feel that the modern pay cable TV environment is what Twin Peaks has always needed. Lynch will be allowed to do what he does with no interference, which will probably push away most viewers, but for those of us who love Lynch's movies I think it may end up being the show we've always been waiting for. Lynch's pure insanity tempered by Frost's TV sensibilities without any external demands or restrictions. I'm normally a pessimistic guy, but for some reason I have a lot of optimism on this one.

Yeah, that corroborates what I was saying. He was forced to do the reveal wayy before he wanted to. After that he most definitely lost interest, but Twin Peaks as he envisioned it was dead. I was just questioning the reason why he lost interest.

I am beyond excited for Twin Peaks to return. In fact, my two biggest loves are all things Star Wars and all things Twin Peaks.
It's official, Kyle Maclachlan is coming back to reprise the role of Dale Cooper. Though… *spoiler*… it remains to be seen whether he will still be possessed by BOB or if he will have been freed from the Black Lodge. *Yay* for getting answers 25 years later!!

Sometimes I imagine how weird and cool ROTJ had been if it was directed by Lynch.
And Twin Peaks was a great show, just waiting for the news episodes.

Bumping my own ancient thread here...but is anyone else watching the reboot? I'm interested to see what people think considering the variety of expectations you could have coming into a show like this. So far, I've loved every second of this bizarre incomprehensible masterpiece.

I have watched the first two episodes... of the original series. So far, it got my attention. It's a weird mix of a soap opera, procedural and a David Lynch film that somehow works. I need to watch it quickly, as soon I'm leaving London and my University's library with a surprising collection of DVDs and come back home. So far, I think I'm on a right track of finishing it. :)

Well season 3 is very different. All Lynch. No Soap Opera. But its still a fun trip.

I'm in the middle of watching the original show and Fire Walk With Me after that. I only watched the first season and the second season's premiere previously.

Good luck getting through Season 2. It can be a bit of a slog at times in the middle. Once Lynch got his interest back for the finale it gets much more interesting though.

Just watched it. Boy, that was certainly something. Probably shouldn't have watched it before bed.

I felt like Season 2 had good ideas going for it up until ABC forced him to wrap up the Laura Palmer mystery, at which point the show lost its momentum and direction - and while it's not terrible, I don't think it had the kick that it did, although that changed a bit in the last few episodes (the finale was mostly good, but certain parts dragged along). It probably would have worked better if the episode where the killer had been confronted was the Season 2 finale and that they actually had time to develop a Season 3 before proceeding.

I'm wondering if I should try ponying up and buying the companion film to Fire Walk With Me, as I've heard both it and the theatrical release help lead into the new series. I'm not in a hurry to watch all of the new episodes, but I'm certainly interested.

Well...maybe a touch of hyperbolic soap opera thrown in for giggles!

I'm stoked to with how this season has delivered - same, same but different. Is it just me or is there more humor this season?

The surreadiculousness? really comes home when trying describe to a non-viewer how Lynch is presenting the return of the protagonist twenty five years later!

Even the soap opera stuff turns into surreal mindf@#$ stuff this season though. Man...I called that Audrey stuff wasn't all that it seems from the first time she showed up, but it didn't change how jarring and unsettling it was when it finally happened at the end of this last episode.

Man this whole thing has been a treat. So sad it has to end this week. I just want it to keep going.

Well... I guess we got something like this. It mostly made sense and there was some closure, but there was an odd cliffhanger-type thing at the end of the last episode (which was a glorified epilogue).

For what it's worth, the main story arc was finished up (albeit in a way that was a little less satisfying than I would have liked). There were a lot of minor loose ends that never got closure (which, honestly, wasn't all that surprising given that this is a David Lynch work), but I really feel like it would have ended on a stronger note if they went with an epilogue that focused on the rest of the cast instead of telling another story with Dale Cooper that felt like a set-up for another season that may not even happen.

Maybe we'll get another season or something along those lines (since the show did apparently boost Showtime subscriptions in spite of relatively-low ratings). If it ends on this note, then I'll be fine, but I'd have preferred that the other characters get fleshed out. The revival, overall, was good, but I don't think it quite stuck the landing at the very end.

Man, I imagine that episode will be pretty divisive, but I'll be damned if I didn't love every second of it. It was horrifying and haunting. I've been sitting here all day tossing theories and themes around in my head.

Was this whole season a dream that took place as cooper tried to escape the black lodge? Is the finale actually the real world and has Twin Peaks forever been some middle ground between reality and the lodges? Or is the finale a hellish biproduct of Coop's blind pursuit to save Laura which inadvertently causes her death when he scares her in the woods the night she dies? Is the finale Coop an amalgam of Good Coop and Mr C or is he just darker because he's been corrupted by his time in the lodge?

I know some won't like it, but that finale made me want to go back and watch the whole thing from the beginning again. I felt scared and betrayed by the ending in all the (I think) intended ways.

But one of my favorite parts is how that finale works as a meta commentary for nostalgia obsessions. How coop becomes obsessed with bringing Laura back, but when he does nothing is as he remembers it. I feel like it was a simultaneous series finale and criticism from Lynch for us even wanting Twin Peaks to come back in the first place. No matter how much we demand the past be returned, it never will fully come back and when it does both it and us may be worse off for it.
