Some of his comments do make sense though.

Oh dear. One of those. I do get tired of people comparing every summer blockbuster flick with the Marvel output. And not all of their movies were that hot. Not by a longshot.

He's not wrong though. Why shouldn't 9 use a character like Ashoka? Or Ezra? All the hard work of developing those characters are already done.

Because those characters are only established for people who watch the TV shows. Same reason why Marvel hasn't put their TV characters into the movies. The average cinema audience hasn't watched rebels.

Well then Infintiy War shouldn't have worked with that logic. You have to see the majority of the Marvel movies to get Infinity War. Do note: I am in no way excepting Ashoka or Ezra to be in 9, just fyi.

Huh? We're talking about Solo here, and how he is trying to shoehorn comparisons between Solo and Infinity War, and how Infinity War is superior. But his reasoning for that seems to be simply "because it is and because I say so."

Because no one in the general audience knows who these characters are. If there is one thing that describes Harloff best then it's his completely lack of feeling for narrative and audience mechanics.

    Exactly.

I wonder why americans are so in love with Marvel in the first place. I have never seen such fascist art/media project since the Sound of Music....:p I wonder what is so attractive for an US audience about this group of Ubermenschen protecting a voiceless mass against the threat of cosmopolitan foreigness....

A stretch? Probably :p I just like to say how fascist the MCU is
    --- Double Post Merged, May 12, 2018 ---
He also wants Dave Filoni to run Lucasfilm...............

because Rebels was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. ANd that's why episode IX should totalllllllllllllllly revolve around such well written characters like Ezraaaaaaaa and Hera's son.....

So there should be no crossover at all? Then there just separate universes then. A book universe, animated verse, TV verse and a movie verse. It doesn't feel like one giant universe like Star Wars should if everything has it's own niche. Ummm, yes that's a bit of a strech...

Why insert external characters into what really is quite a cohesive narrative? Better to expand on characters in the saga in retrospect in other media than to get character from other media into the main saga. Furthermore it would only limit the narrators freedom to do what he or she wants to do with the characters that are central to the plot and the ancilliar ones he or she creates in support.

Also, cross-overs and on the nose references to other characters are generally frowned upon by general audiences and critics. It detracts, it is most often unnecessary and plays into nostalgia in all the wrong ways.

Even the comparison between Marvel and Star Wars isn't really a fair one to begin with. The MCU is built on an established universe in which many of these characters and plot threads were already connected. MCU retells like a prequel, but Star Wars is heading into unchartered territority with its narratives. You'll probably see a lot of Marvel-esque threads coming together in Solo like they did in RO. This is easy of course, because both are situated in a narrative environment/space which is already established.

Based on the spoilers there is a pretty massive crossover in Solo. Harloff isn't being consistent. He wants Star Wars to be more like Marvel and then he complains that TLJ has too much Marvel humor. Marvel isn't tied to comics canon at all. It just seems he's disappointed that the films are living up to his expectations.

I consider myself a huge movie fan and huge Star Wars fan, but I don't live and die on story choices. Star Wars/Marvel have always been an escape from reality films. Neither Marvel/Lucasfilm have ever produced what I'd call the "best film of the year." The lone exception would be Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is nearly a perfect action/adventure film nearly 40 years later.

I don't get the "Marvel humor," humor is humor. Why is that type "bad" for SW? I see no difference in humor that's in TLJ vs Empire or Return for that matter. Or heck, the saga as a whole.

Marvel humor is generally considered the breaking of the seriousness of the moment with an alleviating joke. It is different from humor which mocks evil authority (a staple trope in Star Wars movies). I also see no specific difference between the humor in the OT and the Sequels.

One does not simply compare Lucasfilm to Marvel...:p

p.s. Last Crusade > Raiders (yoda)

I remember as a kid reading the Han Solo trilogy then finding out that there were Lando books out there too. Some film pundits are suggesting that LANDO should have his own film. Glover nailed it! LFL what's up?!?
